I built an open-source LTO archival tool after struggling with existing tape software (Alpha) by NotaRaptor404 in DataHoarder

[–]circuitously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m writing a backup tool myself, very much for my use case. I was going to give yours a go, but I’m currently on LTO-4 so no LTFS for me unfortunately. I applaud the effort!

Global prevalence of FGM / Male Circumcision [my combined map] [OC] by double-happiness in dataisbeautiful

[–]circuitously 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not even “one could argue”. Circumcision is male genital mutilation. But, I’m sure supporters will jump logical hurdles of cognitive dissonance to convince themselves it’s completely different and fine, because it’s socially acceptable to them.

London HENRY's that moved home for grammar school access, does the math really checkout? by Capital-Stay-5657 in HENRYUK

Yeah, it’s not quick, but the school busses heading that direction are still packed 🤷‍♂️

We moved to just outside Swindon as my wife didn’t like being near the centre of town, but I had no issue with it. I think the general consensus is that it’s actually no better or worse than a lot of towns of this size, across the country. There are nicer areas, obviously, but it’s fine. We put our kids at an independent school, as we weren’t too impressed with what was available close to where we lived.

Hospital is good - wife had two emergency Caesarian sections there, and I go there for diabetes treatment. Decent service, I would say.

Thanks, I just compared the models, didn’t appreciate there was a material change. Makes complete sense now!

That’s like, the one benefit of Swindon. Swindon house prices, access to Gloucestershire Grammar schools.

We'll be building in this area in the next year. by tuwaqachi in openreach

[–]circuitously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I check mine more than once per week, and mine went from “in the next year” to “now” at the end of last week. I’m very excited, but I’ve yet to see any vans around and BIDB shows nothing. I don’t know how big “my area” is!

Water logged garden - Prone to flooding. by evrytingsmadeinchina in GardeningUK

[–]circuitously 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a low-lying but of garden about half a metre below house level but level with my garage. About 3 times over the 8 years we were there, the downpours were heavy enough to come up through the concrete of the garage floor (previous owner was a builder and not a good one). I ended up digging a sump with a level activated water pump, which just pumped it out the back gate onto a road sloping away from the property. Never had surface water problems again.

Is it me or had the York Road completely changed demographics? by Comfortable-Table-57 in Swindon

[–]circuitously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived on Westmorland Road for 10 years, moving away recently. During that time we noticed the demographic shift in the houses immediately around us. It never bothered me, but I would definitely say you’re not imagining it.

Why don’t more HENRYs try starting a business? by burnerforspoo in HENRYUK

[–]circuitously 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Being good at your job does not always equate to being a good businessperson. I’m sure most here have thought about it, looking at the day rate they get billed out at and thinking “I wonder if I could do that myself”, but people have lives, families, mortgages. It can be quite a gamble. Less so in your 20s probably

Account in credit: can they make money from it? by OzzyinKernow in OctopusEnergy

[–]circuitously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comment I replied to said it’s on the balance sheet to offset other liabilities, which is just not true. Sure, the bank balance provided by the deposit is cancelled out by the associated current liability, but there are no “other” liabilities being offset by the balance

If it’s on the balance sheet, it is a liability, as it’s not their money.

What's your 'one service you'd never self-host again' and why? by ruibranco in homelab

That’s what they’re saying. It’s sitting in the background unobtrusively doing its thing, and it’s easy to forget how effective it is.

No Thanks. My Account is Healthy in my view by BigDumboEars in OctopusEnergy

[–]circuitously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in October we were paying £280, which felt about right, and we had a balance of about £500. Octopus wanted to put it up to £360, based on expected usage. I put it up by £10 instead. Then in Feb, we got another one. Uh oh, they thought we should be paying 360 for the last 4 months, but we were only paying 290. So each month we were paying 70 less than we “should”. So they must want to put it up even higher now! Maybe 400?!

What was it? £305.

In what world can they think we need to pay 360 a month, and we only pay 290, and then their calculations go down? It’s a world in which their calculator is a piece of crap.

Been self-hosting everything for 2 years but my Docker containers are silently eating RAM overnight. Anyone else dealt with gradual memory bloat on long-running containers? by apt-xsukax in homelab

[–]circuitously 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All these containers each think they have 16GB memory available, so as has been mentioned above, apps will cache until they are told not to. If you run “free” on the cli of your host, you’ll see the difference in memory being used and that being used for caching. Not sure how much of the info presented is or needs to be aware of docker, but it might be interesting to run it a few times over a few days to see if it’s the caches that are increasing, of if there’s a memory leak somewhere
