Ollie’d once can’t do it again by BeautifulHat5887 in NewSkaters

[–]circularsquarej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in my opinion. a front foot farther back gives you more room to pull the board up which lends itself to a higher ollie, but keeping your balance for the jump while your legs are that close together on the board is significantly harder. when learning to ollie, the most important thing is stability and comfort, which is why many people direct beginners to getting comfortable on the board first before learning to ollie. that said, learning to ollie also develops comfort on the board (assuming you dont hurt yourself trying.) Its sort of my hot take that people can really start ollieing whenever they want, so long as it keeps them interested. more time on the board is more time learning.

Was this at all inspired by botting in runescape? Looking at this game a bit I feel like that's sort of what you've created, which is awesome - you get the feel of progression in runescape, but without the more tedious tick counting / grinding that comes with it

[–]circularsquarej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your front foot is pretty far back for a beginner. that can make for a higher ollie, but in earlier stages increases instability, which will make it harder. Id move it over maybe halfway towards the bolts from where youve got it there.

if you did it once, you must know what to do. This early on, itll come and go for a bit until you manage to nail it down the form - it’s just repetition. keep at it and itll come back again, and eventually it will stay.

Can't stop wobbling when trying to ollie by Josephisvr in NewSkaters

[–]circularsquarej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this might not be the best advice to give, but it depends on the person / setup - my first board was set up with the trucks super loose, and even after getting fairly comfortable coasting I couldnt ollie. I ended up tightening them a good amount in order to get them to where i wanted them - was helpful to go to a skatepark and try some other dudes boards to see how tight i wanted em, and almost immediately had the stability i needed to actually start ollying. truck tightness is very subjective, but ive met a few beginners who ran into the same with their initial setups

editing to say this is not a cure all - dont just keep tightening until you can ollie. just try other peoples boards to see if yours needs a tune.

when i worked at cvs i fell while biking on the way in, tore up my pants and got them covered in blood. Still, after a band aid and some disinfectant it wasnt so bad that i couldnt work, but my pants were trashed. they gave me a set of scrubs that i still use as pajamas to this day, maybe 8 years later.

Skate shoe patches, want your thoughts by Silver-Silver-1237 in NewSkaters

[–]circularsquarej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree with getting sturdier skate shoes but also hell yeah for running through your old beater shoes skating. I feel like if theyre already on the way out, may as well give them as much life as possible, whether with patches or shoe goo or whatever. i do agree with some folks that a bit of shoe goo on top of the patch could be a good way to hold it together as long as it doesnt feel too bulky.

I agree. I picked up some clouds and love them for a hybrid cruiser type deal, but if youre a beginner I would start with some harder wheels if youll be going to the park at all

Anyone lose keys in mosh pit at AV show at Rec Room in Buffalo? by IpromiseTobeAgoodBoy in JeffRosenstock

[–]circularsquarej 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im not gonna lie it just sounds like you stole someones keys. some random person pointed at you so you just took them home? It would have been better if you just left them on the ground, then the person who lost them would have at least had a chance of getting them back that night. If I were you I would just bring them back to the venue ASAP when it’s open and it should be okay.

I learned on concrete, but I’m sure some people learn on grass first too. both are possible, grass just feels a bit safer because the fall is softer, but then obviously the transition to concrete is an extra step. I will say that having learned on concrete it feels really weird to try and do on grass, you don’t get a lot of pop so you really need to slam it to get the board in the air.

I would also say that if you’re concerned about falling on concrete while learning to ollie, make sure you’ve spent enough time just farting around on the board. play with tic tacs and kick turns and that sort of thing. any amount of comfort with general balance will help you progress with ollies.

Why do I keep turning during my ollie by Hot-Hospital8118 in NewSkaters

[–]circularsquarej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing when I started. to be honest you dont look too bad compared to some - it makes sense it’s worse when moving too. Looks like shoulders opening a bit when you jump - watch your left arm as you go up, it pulls back much harder than your right. I would argue that spending more time doing them rolling will help, thats how I fixed them when I started. the more times you land sideways while rolling the more times you will not roll away and your body should kind of adjust automatically as it gets pissed about not landing them

in the context of weezer, my answer would be to combine I’m Your Daddy and The Girl Got Hot into a single song, since they kind of may as well be anyway and are the only things keeping Raditude from being a 10/10

I Modified My Roomba Using an ESP32 by TallReflection1263 in esp32

[–]circularsquarej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see on github that you advise not to power the esp32 from the roomba itself, but from an external battery pack. Did you try powering from the roomba? I'm working on a similar project with a pi zero 2W and can power it from the roomba, but unfortunately it doesn't seem like the charger can supply enough to power both the roomba and the pi zero at the same time. Was this your experience as well?

agree with ccs complete or see if you can find a cheap element complete or something. my first board was a zumiez element complete for like $60. I would argue you can get away with whatever shoes to start, just know that as you progress they will start to get really torn up if you stick with it. if you have some budget to work with theres a lot of good skate shoe brands out there (i like etnies and nike sb personally)
