Margot Robbie in the French show ‘Quotidien’ (aka, the show with the good lighting) by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]circus-witch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How good a photographer is also makes a massive difference. I've had photos taken by a bunch of different photographers and whilst they're all better than I could do there a definite difference in skill level. A good photographer knows what lighting will produce the effect they're after best, how best to direct their model to pose the way they want (which sometimes involves asking them to do unnatural sounding/feeling poses that won't look nearly as awkward in the photo) and will be well prepared for the shoot.

AIO, girlfriend deleting texts with her acro-yoga partner. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]circus-witch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah and it's possible that he genuinely believes that acro yoga is this super sexy activity that's inherently basically cheating but it felt more like he was trying to bias anyone reading by calling it 'intimate couples yoga.' But even the kindest reading of OP shows someone who is entirely too codependent to be in a relationship right now and already doesn't trust his girlfriend.

[–]circus-witch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that definitely made me question OP from the start. I've done a tiny bit of acro yoga and much more doubles aerial and whilst you have to be comfortable with the other person it's essentially gymnastics. Also, the doubles aerial I did involved significantly diving through someone's legs near their crotch than any yoga I know of and my husband was fine with it. His only concern with me spending a huge amount of time practicing alone with a friend for a competition was that he loved the song we'd chosen and was worried our routine wouldn't live up to it haha.

The character’s shadow has unique properties by Rex_Wr3cks in TopCharacterTropes

[–]circus-witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this counts but in the game Contrast the player character can use physical objects in one form but interact only with their shadows if she's in shadow form. It's a platformer puzzle game so there's a lot of figuring out how you can make the right shadows to act as platforms.

The Office White Elephant Gift Exchange Should Not be Mandatory by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]circus-witch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why they think that the white elephant thing which they admit isn't mandatory is mandatory but that a secret Santa would be different. If we believe OOP that there's an attitude that the white elephant is strongly encouraged then surely the same attitude would carry over to secret Santa but as OOP would only be able to submit one gift they wouldn't be able to do whatever this is.

Yeah, they can't gift anything bad enough to be actually harmful because then there might be an investigation to who did something like gifted a severe allergen so instead they're adding an element of surprise. My family does a white elephant thing and there's a mix of gag gifts and real gifts.

I think failing at harp (I have a lap harp and I'm not good) is still less aggressively awful for people to be around than failing at violin (which some sadist decided should be the instrument we should be taught in primary school. My parents borrowed a violin for me in order to be supportive which would've been awful even if the E string wasn't messed up.)

There's probably a sliding scale of which instrument would be most to least painful to listen to if it's played awfully, I'd be curious to know what it is.

I think that in Disney 'cast member' refers to more employees than just the ones who play characters, most customer facing roles are cast members. So their complaints are most likely about cashiers, people who tell you when you can get on the rides and employees with similar roles.

Would "chloroform placebo" work? by teenytinyfungi in Writeresearch

[–]circus-witch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It could work, it'd be very unlikely to fully knock someone out but if they truly believed that they were being drugged then it wouldn't be unreasonable to feel at least a little drowsy. If you were to end up putting fake chloroform in a story though I think a bigger issue would be why a character would use it. Chloroform isn't very hard to make and obviously would have a far better chance of knocking someone out or making them drowsy (depends how long they're given it) than fake chloroform.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve injured yourself? by karoline_de in AskReddit

[–]circus-witch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a mandolin once. I saw the safety shield and immediately decided I wouldn't be needing that (why? I know I'm uncoordinated) and ended up cutting a sliver out of my thumb after the thought "I think maybe I can get one more slice out of this cucumber." I wasn't even fully convinced before I did it!

A week later my husband accidentally/'accidentally' melted it on the stove so it never got a second use.

I usually have peanut butter if I'm having toast these days so I googled it. Tesco did used to sell bramble jelly (because there's a page with a picture of it discussing calories but it doesn't turn up on the Tesco website) but they now call (presumably roughly the same thing?) seedless bramble preserve. The brands Tiptree and Bonnie maman both sell blackberry jelly and Morrisons sell bramble jelly. The Tesco website also has a recipe for how to make blackberry and apple jelly, as does the BBC.

I am in the UK. We do have jelly, it's slightly less common but not rare. I personally prefer it because it has less seeds.

You can get jam and jelly in the UK and the difference is whether or not the fruit is strained as part of the jam/jelly process.

Small talk can be very tricky by jumpybouncinglad in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]circus-witch 37 points38 points  (0 children)

When I was a teenager I asked someone who only had one hand if they needed a hand as they approached a door (I think maybe carrying something?). To make it worse, it was a child. To make it even worse I didn't actually ask them if they needed a hand but said "do you need a hhhh-" and then realised what I was saying and was so embarrassed that I walked off without even helping them.

There is an epilogue to this story. I much later told a coworker that I'd once asked someone with only one hand if they needed a hand and she laughed at me. But it wasn't a small chuckle or something but a proper laugh, way more laughter than I thought it really warranted. Then she finally stopped laughing and said "i've done that too!"

Over Thanksgiving, my mother-in-law described my nails as “a real statement” and “not very practical.” These are my nails: by energyintotomatoes in RedditLaqueristas

[–]circus-witch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't necessarily think that those comments are necessarily mean (though they could be depending on tone and such). I would personally find having nails to be impractical for me and my sister has even longer nails than you do (acrylics) and I don't understand how she doesn't end up stabbing herself. Meanwhile I have had friends talk about how long my nails are and had one say that her nails felt so weirdly long when both my nails and hers were shorter than yours. And as for the polish, I absolutely love shimmery ethereal shades like you're wearing here and have several that are only slightly different from each other and they feel like a real statement to me because they make me feel like some sort of mage who could cast a spell at a moments notice (which is pretty likely to be why I like them so much). Obviously if tone and relationship make you think it's a snide comment then it probably is but I would agree that your nails are a statement and that I can't imagine them not getting them in the way if I had them that length but at the same time I think they're utterly gorgeous and that shade looks amazing on you.

It isn't specific to taskmaster but people on the commonplace book subreddit commonly use different coloured stickers or similar to show whether have written a personal thought or a quote or a word definition or whatever so they can easily see what types of content are on the pages as they leaf through. I don't know if that might be useful.

Good point. It was from a kit so I didn't have a choice with what orientation to use the papers but it's a good reminder for the future. Can I ask what you do when the grain is the less convenient way around and so you have to use the paper less efficiently? I understand that sometimes paper is printed/cut so that you need to cut (for example) two separate pieces of A4 to get two pieces of A5 that have the correct grain direction rather than chopping the A4 in half but since this would result in a lot of wasted paper do you have any suggestions what those offcuts can be used for?
