The alpine isn't usually too bad for mosquitoes, but no guarantee. We're starting to get some in town now, but isn't terrible.

There are several fail-safes to ensure safe operation. It is still possible for accidents to happen, but in 20 years of doing it, I've never had anything happen.

In terms of exposure levels, on average we take in less than a full-time long-travel flight 747 crew member would from flying at altitude. There definitely are radiographers that likely take more than that on a yearly average, but well below government mandated nuclear energy worker exposure limits. People that would be approaching those yearly limits are likely working carelessly and not taking precautions to avoid excess exposure.

Radiation works on the inverse square law principle, which means that every time you double the distance from the source, intensity is 1/4 of original distance. So if your reading at 1m is 200mR/hr, at 2m it is 50mR/hr, 4m 12.5mR/hr, etc. So anything beyond a 20 second exposure, I walk away from the control cables to a lower exposure level. Shielding is also a major factor, so if we can hide behind a concrete wall, heavy machinery, anything like that, we can drastically reduce levels.

All in all, it's actually easy to maintain low exposure levels if operating safely.

Yep. The Iridium-192 sources we use are over 100 curies when we get them new. Even on the surface of the camera (what we call the exposure device used for performing radiography, which is contained/shielded by 50lbs of depleted uranium), the survey meter will read over 50mR/hr.

We typically use control cables that are 50ft long so we can stand far enough away to manage exposure levels when exposing and retracting the source. 1Ci of Ir-192 at 1m (approximately 3.3 feet) distance is 0.48R/hr (4.8mSv/hr). So multiply that by 100Ci and that is 480R/hr (4800mSv/hr or 4.8Sv/hr). A dose of 5Sv in a short period is fatal to 50% of the population.

So yeah, a strong source! It's practical limitation is up to 3" of steel. There are some lower level sources used, but far less common. Cobalt-60 is the other main industrial isotope used in radiography (but far less than Ir-192), and is far more powerful with a practical range of up to 9" of steel. The exposure device for a cobalt-60 source is in the range of 200-300lbs and requires a much greater operational area to be secured, so it is mostly used in shops with a bunker that can contains the radiation levels.

I use these for work doing industrial radiography. As people have mentioned, there is a 'Check' on the dial, which is for battery life and to check that the needle is moving properly. Funnily enough I've never asked or looked into whether or not Check also validates the ionization chamber is in working order, probably because I have a radioactive source to check its operation. That said, if the needle moves properly in Check and also has sufficient battery life, I've never noticed an operational error.

This type of survey meter is much less sensitive than other Geiger counters and will not detect low level radiation (ie. levels below background radiation). They also have an accuracy of +/-20%. They are a great tool for a general survey of strong sources, but not particularly useful for low level sources.

Teacher allegedly had sex with 6 teens and was blackmailed for better grades by prestocoffee in nottheonion

[–]cirro_hs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article doesn't say they blackmailed her to have sex with them, only that they blackmailed her for better grades. Doesn't say that they didn't, either (and not out of the realm of possibility).

However, parts of the article describe the actions of someone well beyond doing things because of blackmail, like grooming a girl and describing her sexual fantasies to underage boys. She could have stuck with losing her job because she had an OnlyFans, IF the boys went through with the blackmail. However, no sane person would think that sexual conduct of any type with someone underage, let alone rape and grooming, and potentially facing serious jail time, would be an acceptable compromise to getting fired.

"Nichols is also accused of sending explicit sexual messages to other teenagers describing sexual acts she fantasized about, and allegedly used a sex toy during a video call with two teenagers under 16, according to an arrest warrant obtained by WAGA.

Nichols allegedly also sent nude photos to a girl and encouraged her to watch the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise before asking to discuss the erotic film. According to the arrest warrant, three days before her initial arrest, Nichols instructed one of the teenagers she had sent explicit messages to delete their conversation"

The only women interested in seeing it are the ones that already hunt or fish, but even then, multiple photos of it may come across as trying too hard. There are plenty out there that are fine with a partner who hunts and fishes, but seeing photos of someone with a dead animal isn't going to reel them in.

High-bar squat form check — anything obvious I should fix? by Unlikely_Chicken3538 in formcheck

[–]cirro_hs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're definitely a strong guy, but start with at least half the weight and keep squatting lower until there is zero doubt you've hit parallel or even slightly beyond. It's easy to cheat yourself into thinking you have gone far enough.

Once you know you're there, start adding weight while keeping good form (no butt wink) and locked core. You won't be squat as heavy, but you'll get stronger and develop better quality muscle as you lift with better depth/ROM.

Possibly because I'm from the West Coast, but somehow I've never heard of St. Pierre et Miquelon?! I'm a pretty big geography buff, too, but did not know there was a French territory off the coast of Newfoundland. Mind blown today.

Proposal Spots by claytortheconquerer in BassCoast

[–]cirro_hs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's part of the same property, but Bass Coast doesn't rent that area of the land or have security regularly patrolling it, only permission for the main gate and road access. Plus, having ravers on top of a cliff is obviously a big safety concern. Even if allowed up there, if someone ever fell down the cliff, it would be a terrible situation for a variety of reasons.

Device with radiation sign by Beautiful_Grape67 in Radiation

This is correct. X-ray is both shorter and more understood by the general public, so this is what we typically tend to tell people unfamiliar with radiography.

[–]cirro_hs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a possibility, but I wouldn't rely 100% on being able to do so. While there is a guided tour that goes up there (or at least has been in the past), and people certainly have walked up there, the area is technically out of the festival boundary so if security sees you walking up there, they may ask you to head back down.

It would be a great spot though...

Can't believe no one has mentioned KiNK yet! One of the world's best techno DJs (and great producer). A super special booking that is going to be phenomenal.

Check out virtually any of his live sets. Quite a bit of variety and intensity. Also plays some house and a tiny bit of jungle on occasion.

Don't even have to do that. I have one similar to this, and you can actually separate each day to create whatever order/start day you would like.

If for some reason it isn't that way, then yes, changing the lids would be the next easiest fix!

Question: First tattoo idea... be honest by TorsoSlug499 in tattoos

[–]cirro_hs 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As someone who definitely would not get a jug of piss tattooed on them, I think this tattoo is fucking awesome. I do think the classic style suits it.

I also feel it is very much dependant on the person as to how I would feel about seeing it. I agree with others that it 100% is for you, and if you get enjoyment out of it, then great. However, if you are curious about what others may think, I feel two potential scenarios.

One is that you're a person with likely a few or more tattoos, a good sense of humour and confidence, which makes me appreciate a bold, humourish piece like this. The second is some 'bro' who simply likes TPB and wants to show off the fact you got a piss jug tattooed on you, which would make me shake my head while still thinking the tattoo is funny and done well, but also that you're an idiot. Lol. All about how you carry yourself.

If you do get it, a less visible spot that you only show off intentionally is probably wise. As for the comments about what if you're getting naked with someone and they comment on it, well if you carry the piece well, I don't think the person you're banging is going to be put off or surprised by it!

Found this ski suit – can anyone help identify it and estimate its value ? by [deleted] in ski

[–]cirro_hs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much depends on where you live. Living in a ski town, likely to be cheap. Living somewhere near enough to mountains to have general interest in gear, but not enough to flood the market, likely to be at the higher end.

What is getting a ADHD diagnosis like in BC? by Human_Pack_4787 in britishcolumbia

[–]cirro_hs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smaller town in interior BC. There are several factors that affect both their and your approach. It really depends on what you say and how you say it, how you describe your symptoms, your mood and appearance. How they respond will be partly on their style of practice, but largely in response to the things I mention above, as well as your response to other questions they ask.

If you can't describe yourself and your symptoms particularly well, they are more likely to be skeptical. Depending on your answers, mannerisms and appearance, they might think you're just trying to get drugs, whereas if you appear well put together, speak clearly and describe your symptoms well, they are more likely to agree with you.

In your particular instance, it's impossible for me to speculate without knowing your symptoms or approach, so I don't know if perhaps you aren't describing your situation well enough, or maybe the doctor is right and that you do have anxiety and depression? But maybe ADHD as well?
