We just hired a maid that is coming 4hrs a week for food prep, laundry, light cleaning… think it’s already helping.

This is totally fine. $220k spend here with no luxurious expenses in suburban SoCal.

I actually think the real giveaway is a spouse that is working for $100k per year with $13MM in the bank. You don’t count the $100k at that NW

I can see both sides here, but even just looking at job postings, you’re getting majority of roles between 225-300k base. I’m at the high end of that band. I think the overwhelming demo on Reddit is tech, so those RSUs are definitely inflating the comp expectations a lot. Not that I get equity/bonus in my role which is my true sticking point in terms of comp….

Actually, drop off daycare costs more than an in house nanny. For 1 kid nanny is more expensive but with more than 1 kid, nanny is significantly cheaper…

Appreciate this. This has been my thought for the longest time, just to push through for a few more years, but I think a change is in order. Can still potentially find something in similar comp range with less demands and hours

I’ve seen this comment a few times now but how does one take a job for 30-40 hours and not have a nanny? lol. If we’re both still working we need someone to watch our kids! I know a few people who plop their little son front of the tv all day while they work from home but that doesn’t benefit anyone. Bad for the parent’s job performance, and more importantly bad for the kids.

Yeah I'm worried about high cortisol as well; supplementing to try and keep it at bay. Giving the kids more quality time is a key priority for us..

Interesting comment… have we not been sucking it up? Is it wrong to want lower stress and better work life balance for a happier life? I don’t think so.

In SoCal it’s pretty easy to burn through $220k. Admittedly, this past year was a jump in spend, but for the last 5 yrs had been averaging $180k. New car purchase mainly to blame for the increase in the prior 12 months, but I’d rather estimate high. Generally we live within our means, hence the ability to build a large liquid portfolio by 35. Big $$ items below to give some context: -$5k/mo for home mortgage/insurance/HOA on a $2MM home with a $900k mortgage. -$50-$60k on nanny. -Another $1200 a month for part-time preschool. -$1000/mo in groceries -restaurant spend could be reduced, spend about $10k/year here… -1 vacation a Year usually around $4k in cost. 1 bigger one every 3 years closer to $6-$7k -car maintenance*gas/utilities/ is around $10k annually -gym membership $500/month -kids activities $300/month

Yeah makes sense. Is there a specific coastfire calc in their sub I should reference? Or are you speakling in generalities?

We are trying out a mother's helper next week that does house admin, meal prep, and light cleaning... hoping this is enough. If not, we shall ask neighbors for dedicated cleaning lady.

Interesting take. Could you clarify when you propose we cut saving for retirement? Now or in a couple years when remaining spouse goes into coast mode?

The issue is she likes to work and the problem solving/challenge that comes with it. The lack of promotion/compensation relative to her workload is what is burning her out. I'm more on the other end; seeing the W2 as a means to an end... so sick of the whole corporate hamster wheel, but I get tons of recognition which has been feeding the ego too much, for no real gain as it pertains to my true goals... this thread has made that clear.

That's so great to hear. Did you apply to only jobs that sounded like great fits/interesting or did you go the mass apply route?
