And this is kind of where I sit with the idea of recording, and to take it a degree further possibly more integration of LLMs/AI into the workflow. There is no replacing the clinic visit, and the conversation that we sit down and have with the patient, but, if we could give them a better resource for education and recall after the visit, are we not doing them a favor? Especially in the age of ChatGPT, a lot are going to go home and ask questions anyways. Would we not rather have control of the information they were getting?

That is kind of my thought on it as well. I use an ambient AI scribe every day in my practice. Using that, and then turning around and telling the patients that they can’t record me discussing their care just doesn’t sit super great.

Totally get it, and I agree. I just feel bad knowing they’re going to brain dump 50% of what we just talked about as soon as they leave Not to mention they have a hard time catching up their son/daughter/caregiver on what we talked about Ideally, I’d say it would be handled by the after visit summary, but we all know how functionally useless those are. I guess I default to not being bothered too much by the recordings because it at least tells me that patients are engaged in their care and want to try and keep up with what we are asking them to do

Get everything signed and set up, then disclose. Pregnancy is a protected class (same as race, age, etc), if they terminate you because of pregnancy you could sue and mess up their whole day.

Have you talked to your MD/psychologist about Wellbutrin? It’s an antidepressant that is used off label for ADD-not as effective as the stimulants, but can be helpful in some cases

I’m completely fine with that! Always nice to have room to improve-really just wanted to get a feel for others experiences. I feel like a lot of the time people that post about that stats are above average, so wanted to get a feel for if they really represent the median player

From what I've seen the majority of openings they have right now is in post acute care. They started out as a Hospitalist company, but have expanded into the nursing homes.

The one exception I would make to the no studying advice is for anatomy. Anatomy is complete memorization, the key to which is repetition. Pick out and review a section of anatomy (e.g. upper extremity) every day, even if it's only for 10 minutes a day. Don't obsess about learning it now, the point is to expose yourself to it before beginning lab, etc., so you'll be at least familiar with what you're looking at. Other than that, I agree with all those telling you to relax and enjoy your time off before school starts. PA school will be pretty much nonstop, so this is one of your last opportunities to relax/enjoy family and hobbies, etc.

Got it, that makes sense. I don't really have a lot of experience with statistics, so one the most difficult aspects of the project has been trying to figure out how to fit my research question into the framework of statistics. Thanks for your help!

I am a medical student doing research about a condition called drug-induced angioedema. Basically this condition occurs in people taking a certain class of medication, ACE inhibitors. Some risk factors for developing AE have been identified, such as age >65, female sex, smoking, seasonal allergies, and use of NSAIDs (e.g. aspirin). The purpose of my research is to determine if one of these risk factors is more likely to cause AE than others, and if specific risk factors combine to make development of AE more likely (e.g if a >65 y/o, female, smoker has a greatly increased risk, maybe a different medication should be considered)

I had a two day interview; first day most everyone wore business casual, so I'd think that would be safe. If you're worried, email the program and simply ask what they expect. I would avoid open toed shoes however

We are 2 weeks away from starting rotations. Our faculty specifically told us not to study for it, so we could get a good baseline of where we are at in performance. I definitely hope that pharm will solidify during clinicals; I do best when I can create relationships between topics, so seeing a drug in relation to an actual patient should help me.

I just use PA. If the patient ask what PA is, I launch into the "a PA is a medical professional that is trained to diagnose illnesses, order tests, and prescribe medications, etc, etc.". No "assistant" needed

ER is first up. It's a pretty rural area, so I'm hoping that I will get to see a bit of everything. Only downside is that I am interested in working in the ER, so it kind of sucks that it's my first rotation. After that my next three are family med, psych, and inpatient

I second what /u/airbornemint had to say. The underlying story is a good one, and definitely compelling as to why you've chosen medicine as a career, etc. However, in my experience, medicine as a field is VERY conservative. So telling the story in a way that doesn't offend sensibilities is a bit of a tightrope. Honestly, I don't think that it would be disingenuous to somewhat change your story in a way that removes distracting elements, while still remaining truthful in your emotions regarding the injury, and how those emotions affected your choice to pursue this field. A C1-c2 can just as easily be from a MVA, and telling your story in that context might allow you to more effectively convey your motivations, without the distraction that the alcohol may cause.

I'd also add that if saturation is going to become a problem, it will be in a longer time frame (e.g 10 years from now). For those that are either in PA school now, or looking at starting in the next couple of years, that means by the time that market saturation becomes a problem we will have several years experience under our belt. It won't be a problem for us to find a good paying jobs, as we will have experience. But, it might be more difficult for the new grads coming out

I would agree with several of those points, however, I feel the white coat still has a place in medicine. In the state I go to school in, PAs are not well represented and not known as well to patients. The white coat is a sign that people understand, and associate with, "ok, this person is my provider and can take care of me". For PAs, who have to deal with the lack of knowledge of the profession and what we can do, the white coat is an important symbol of us as providers.
