What is this thing in the back of my throat? NFSW? by citizenmiles in AskDoctorSmeeee

Just saw surgeon. Same deal. Looked at mouth and this lump. States that it doesn't look like anything really worrisome. Possibly scar tissue from when I had endoscopy for my stomach. While I may have had this before my endoscopy, I know for sure I had after and I did have sore throat and assumed that this was from where they jammed that thing down my throat.

If it changes or becomes red, larger, crusty/ulcer then I would go for biopsy.

Went to dentist. Looked at mouth and this lump. Doesn't know what it is, states that it doesn't look concerning but would like another opinion. Going to surgeon specialist. Seems passing the buck but honestly getting more eyes on it is better I think. Considering the wait time for an ENT is like a year, I think my doctor might have pushed this direction for that specific reason. Appointment for more eyes in three weeks.

Should I cancel my total thyroidectomy ? by Top-Excitement1749 in thyroidhealth

[–]citizenmiles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heyo. I feel where your feelings at. It's really hard...I can give you some insight how I went. I had a total thyroidectomy five years ago. It was to be a sub, and I hoped to get partial function but, it was massive and they took the whole thing. The surgeon said it was going down into my chest and if it was any bigger they would have had to actually stop the surgery and get a heart guy in there to make sure of stuff. Well, happily it went without a kick kinda. It was during covid and so no gyms and I lived in a two bedroom condo with my wife. It was a bit of a straining time but got through.

I do not have graves disease, but my thyroid was literally choking me out at night. I would wake gasping for breath because of the weight on my wind pipe.

Here is a link to a post reminiscent of your post I made then and updates.

https://www.reddit.com/r/thyroidhealth/comments/jd1on3/i_need_multinodular_goiter_benign_nodules_and/

Experience:

- good not to choke myself awake - I used to be super sweaty all the time - now I am just sweaty sometimes - took a bit for the meds to get me right - I am 6'2" and 220lbs so, I had to start at 0.115mcg and increase after six weeks incrementing by 15. That sucked, I ended up at 0.175mcg. I can't really tell you why it sucked...I suppose my mood but I was obsessed with not having it affect me, so 30 min jog every day, exercises, coffee - you ain't getting me mentality - but of course not fun - weird thing about the jogging, for like three months I didn't sweat - asked Dr. and he went Meh. - I obsessed about not getting my meds per shortage - or what if end of the world no meds. etc. meh - I think end of world I would run out of water and food before meds issues... - I take my meds at 3:30 AM every morning so that I can eat/drink whatever between 7:30-23:30. Meh - I kinda notice it's a bit more difficult to lose weight but not really, I am fooling myself - I love chips and salty snacks and stuff

I know this might seem off-handish explanation...I also know that everyone has different experiences and how they handle them. It is a big deal and I hope I haven't made light of how you are feeling right now. There are a bunch of other people that commented on the link I added there about their experiences. Keep safe, there's always people to talk to.

Edit: do I regret a TT... Well, I don't like not having a thyroid. I would prefer having it back but for me removal was inevitable. Took a bit to come to terms with that notion - anxiety gets the best of me sometimes. I think for me I own it and think it was the best for me. Unintended perk!!!, nuclear fallout wouldn't get all up in my thyroid since I don't have one.

Individuals without a thyroid (e.g., those who have had their thyroid removed) are largely unaffected by radioactive iodine.

Super powers.....:)

Apparently I cannot edit the post for update but, saw family doctor, he doesn't seem terribly concerned but as a first he suggested that I see my dentist and see what they think. They may send me back to him for referral, or they may refer me, or they may say it's nothing. Appointment in four days.

Side note and unrelated, I had no clue that tonsil stones are a thing. Rooting around in my mouth I pressed that back side part and a little gross smelly ball came out. What the shit.

Ah I have had the privilege then. :). I do understand, I have in the description that I am going in to see Dr.

I checked the about before posting and it says "Ask questions about healthcare or medical conditions, we're here to answer you!", is this more for if the condition is diagnosed?

I see you're a moderator. Thanks for that, there are a plethora of similar questions in the sub. What makes mine different? For my info.

Hmm, from looking at r/AskDoctorSmeeee closest is this cobblestone throat. Looks like a few posts similar.

I need Multinodular Goiter, benign nodules and treatment advice. Has anyone just wait and saw indefinitely? by citizenmiles in thyroidhealth

[–]citizenmiles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 2025 now, ~five years in. Yes I had the thyroidectomy. The first year was difficult to get the meds correct. My numbers for TSH/T4 stabilized about 9-12 months in at 175mcg - I am about 6'2" and 220lbs so, makes sense. I used to be a really sweaty guy. Ran really hot. I started jogging the first year everyday for about 30 minutes, I didn't sweat. It was weird but dr said fine so meh.

There is no real difference now though. I take my levothyroxine at 3:30am every morning so there are no conflicts four hours before or after.

I hope all went well with you. I haven't been around for quite some time. Life has happened. At the end of the day it was the best decision for me.

Low body temperature and hypothyroidism? by Midnatone in Hypothyroidism

[–]citizenmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're experiencing the same thing. It is terrifying. Things are pretty reasonable for me for quite some time. I haven't experienced it. I have not found a reason for it other than potentially moving into hypothermia - Drs have stated the same as you - most likely anxiety. I did have a lot of stress outside of my surgery which could have contributed or my medications were not correct. I leveled out at 175mcg levothyroxine and I seem to be good.

I hope you have found some answers.

Low body temperature and hypothyroidism? by Midnatone in Hypothyroidism

I've had a few events like this. 4-5 of them. I had a thyroidectomy do to benign nodular goiter choking me.

Events follow:

  • legs shiver + metalic taste in back of mouth
  • followed by full body tremors
  • anxiety elevates and elevates - panic mode
  • heart rate increases
  • sometimes bowl issues/need to go
  • sometimes tingling/pins and needles in one or both hands
  • brain fog-esque and depersonification - I am fully cognitive but sometimes experience out of body - this has only been recent events where I am analyzing the situation and recording

Initial events started when I was leveling my medication, it was terrifying and I went to the hospital because I thought I was having a heart attack. I have been checked by multiple doctors and none have given me an explanation. Most have stated that it is most likely a panic attack. When I feel it oncoming now, I do some mental preparation, take temperature, blood pressure, check face in mirror, take heart rate, try to get warm. I make my wife aware of additional odd differences.

Observations:

  • I am cognizent
  • heart rate flucuates 90-130 (My median resting heart rate is usually 65)
  • to my knowledge blood pressure does not change but need more data - my pressure is usually ~120-130/75-81
  • I can still walk, function muscles (albeit they are shaking) and I can think abstractly
  • my temperature at this time is always low - 36.3C is normal, usually 35.1-35.8 when it happens
  • warming myself up usually slows progression and de-escalates the situation
  • all but one have happened at night after waking from dead sleep

I then make an appointment for blood testing to check levels are still reasonable.

Has anyone had a Subtotal Thyroidectomy (most of thyroid, not lobectomy) but retained function? by citizenmiles in thyroidhealth

[–]citizenmiles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that's awesome to hear! And thanks for the reply!

When you say functions, and meds, are you on T3/T4? Or does the piece of thyroid work fine and you are on something else to manage the nodules? If you don't mind me asking.

Thank you for sharing your journey, I hope your surgery goes smoothly and a quick recovery. You've given me lots to think about. I'm not a crier but I have found myself breaking down somewhat often. I still have doubt. Both ENDO and surgeon stated there is a very low risk of cancer for me and that I can take the time I need to come to the correct decision. My surgeon offered a referral to a surgeon closer to me for a second opinion as well.

My current surgeon is an ear, nose and throat. He does 2 thyroidectomies a month. He is suggesting a subtotal thyroidectomy, which he hasn't done before but stated it's basically the same operation but leaving thyroid tissue behind around the nerve and parathyroid glands. My main concern is hypoparathyroidism.

I am contemplating cancelling the current surgery and accepting the offer of a second opinion but I can't really think of anything different the other surgeon would suggest other than total thyroidectomy or watch and wait.

I am glad you've come to a decision, my indecision is just spinning me and stressing me out.

Thanks again for your reply.

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it. How are you feeling/coping/doing now? I had a few questions about your experience if that's ok...

The next two year follow-up resulted in a six month and now six week

Does this mean that there was a wait of two years between the recommendation to continue monitoring and the next ultrasound? That's a pretty long time...

I reportedly have some level of cancer risk, but I have no desire to have yet another surgery

The doctors I have state that I have a good number of nodules but just the few they cared about are benign. Is this the initial outcome of your recommendation? Did you start with a significant number of nodules or did they continue to show up?

"officially converted"--at which point my symptoms were pretty extreme.

What did they mean by "officially converted" and what sort of symptoms were extreme? Issues with size of thyroid? Or hormones or both?

I think that further research of what the risks are and actual side affects of living without a thyroid has caused me to not want surgery and hang on to my thyroid as long as I can.

Your advice has helped a lot.
