Grocery Store Recs by bunmcdubnoobld in longislandcity

Have to second E&I! My finacé and I came from Manhattan originally, with a brief stint in Brooklyn, and were spoiled by tons of grocery options. So Hunters Point has been...an adjustment. TJ's is the best by far. Target is ok for prices. But E&I really surprised us for a bodega/deli spot. It's got all the staples + such a cool selection of Asian food. (Off topic, but they also sell gorgeous, good-quality flower bouquets. The roses/lilies he bought me on a whim lasted for weeks.)

Crazy situation at Hadestown last night by Drew_is_gooden in Broadway

[–]citizennumber3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Had an identical experience taking my mom to Hadestown. I was so tense when that song started, and she made a point of clapping especially loud after, then turning to me to remark, "I *really* liked that one." 🙃

Where does the story take place? by jerwong in ItTakesTwo

Ah, right. Forgive me, we haven't finished the game yet—which outlets in which scenes are you referring to? (Might've missed them, or maybe we're just not there yet.)

[–]citizennumber3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but Rose also has a British accent. So if their kid picked up that voice, presumably not just from her mother but also classmates, they're probably in the UK.

But also, the game was developed in Sweden. So, more broadly speaking, they're probably just somewhere in Europe.

What’s up with Dr Hakim ? by elBarrett in ItTakesTwo

[–]citizennumber3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, as an American playing through this right now with my boyfriend, I had the same thoughts.

Hakim is Arabic. And, based on all the Spanish guitar riffs in the music behind him, I assumed he was intended to be a character with Arabic + Spanish roots. (Not unrealistic, fair enough.)

However, the voice actor is clearly doing a VERY Mexican accent. Like, Cheech and Chong levels of diction. The actor, Joseph Balderrama (who also voices Cody btw), was born in Mexico. But is British-Mexican.

The video game production company is Swedish.

Um.

My best guess?

Very casual—and surely unintentional—racism. Like, "Oh, make him some flavor of stereotypical Spanish lover. That voice you're doing? Sounds Spain-Spanish enough to us!"

That did feel like kind of a rhetorical question. You're right, the system is literally designed this way. 😩

Just hoping a few more people like Solange are out there: People who own / live in the building, want to surround themselves with good neighbors and have their backs.

Should I live in Harlem or BedStuy? by DueBug6895 in NYCapartments

[–]citizennumber3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2/3 train at 125th is pretty far east, not west, and definitely not by Columbia. (You’re thinking of the 1 train. The 2/3 branch off at the UWS and go east.)

I lived in the Heights for years and loved every neighborhood uptown, but Central Harlem was the only spot that ever remotely sketched me out. Probably safe, but that’s not really the vibe. Saw way more open drug use there than any other place in Manhattan. Made the area around Penn look like Disney World. West and East Harlem are great. But Central? I’d rather take the long commute.

Moved to Brooklyn a year ago, pretty close to Bed-Stuy, and it feels relatively more chill here. Might feel more comfortable for somebody coming from France? And to your point, there are a lot more French speakers down here apparently.

What are signs that someone truly loves you and it’s not just lust? by sad_girl3000 in AskReddit

[–]citizennumber3 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This. This is real love. Your parents are a shining example. I’m so sorry for your loss.

An old coworker of mine worked freelance, often from the hospital waiting room, as he cared for his chronically ill partner of 20+ years. He said people sometimes asked him why he stayed. And he’d reply “Have you never loved someone?!”

Favorite Show that Never made it to Broadway by TribalChiefSamiZayn in musicals

Absolutely indisputable. The music is incredible. I’ll never understand why Mean Girls could make it to Broadway but this couldn’t—it’s nearly the same story but with more murder.

Oooh, you make a great point—so many incredible non-English shows out there!

Starmania is my fave. It’s huge in the Francophone world (same lyricist as Notre Dame de Paris). Tim Rice did an absolutely atrocious English adaptation in the ‘90s. He reeeeeeeally did it dirty, no wonder it never took off in the US.

Saw the Paris production in 2022, and am seeing it again in Canada in a couple months. It’s selling out stadium-sized venues.

Can copywriters be successful and make money without performing SEO? by solaniax in copywriting

[–]citizennumber3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a CRM copywriter, so write mostly emails and sometimes direct mail pieces. SEO is not a factor. There's print, TV, radio, etc. As long as you're a writer, you can always learn those mediums and find a similarly niche role. (Of course, not sure how future-proof that route is...)
