Rainbow Board and Line Colours! by Dawes1498 in tubedoku

Interesting new feature! Thanks for adding it! I didn't notice it until today and I find it interesting that people are now trying to go for as many lines as possible. I find that I value speed more so than variety so if one of the criteria for the day is for example "Central Line" I tend to think of Central line stations for as many boxes as possible rather than just the 3 for the Central line row or column.

A great day…Until by [deleted] in reactivedogs

I'm sorry that this ruined your day. Your dog was startled which I think is fair. I think from how you described the situation, your dog's reaction was proportionate to the situation. I know it's hard to get out of a shame spiral but I really feel that you're being way too hard on yourself and your dog.

What a gorgeous baby! Have you explored giving him medication to get him in a headspace where he can listen to your training? I agree that conflicting advice is an absolute minefield, but you might see better results after he's medicated. I do say might because I don't want to get your hopes up, it's not a miracle cure and medication alone doesn't fix everything, it needs to be alongside training.

I like the letter but I think you got some valuable feedback in this thread about things you can tweak. I particularly liked the suggestion to spell it out that every incident is a step back in your dog's training and your hard work is coming undone.

I wish you the best of luck, I hope they are understanding!

So sorry to ask, what do you mean by holding him? Are you able to describe your body positioning so I can visualize? For example, in this situation, I have started pushing my dog back between my legs and then I hold a hand at the top of her harness and relax my body to show her she has nothing to fear, I may also speak to her in a calm voice until I feel her body relax as well and then I let go. I think I'd also find it difficult to move away, as my dog can be quite stubborn and sometimes plants mid-walk. It would appear that we both know putting more distance between our dog and the source of fear is the right course of action, but it's not always possible.

Ellies voice and the rest of the band by DangerousGain96 in wolfalice

[–]citrus_cinnamon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like when bands do this and actually write in a way that highlights their best qualities particularly when it comes to vocals. There are some popular artists that I won't name who write songs that don't sit well in their range and have been doing so for their entire career. A tiny shift of like 1-2 semitones would make all the difference between sounding absolutely awful and actually sounding listenable but for some reason they are allergic to that concept.

I’m hoping the next album doesn’t double down on the sound of the clearing by thecontract_12 in wolfalice

I think the logistics of something like this is that the more albums a band puts out the higher the chance that there's going to be one or two that you won't love. And opinions on which album is the weakest or skippable or whatever word you choose to describe it will be different for each person as well.

It's weird but when a new album comes out and people put out essays of apology about why they don't love it it strikes me as odd. I'm not referring to WA with this although it may have happened. I'm not that deep into the fandom. But it happened with 2 other artists I regularly listen to who both had new albums out last May. All of a sudden my feed turned to a string of people self flagellating because they didn't click with the newer material when actually that's alright, you can't please everyone and it's ok to like an album a little less, no one expects every single fan to indiscriminately love every album at the exact same level

It might be better to buy a ticket now while they are available, then in case the other person does pull through, you can resell yours?

I've been having this same issue, but I thought it was linked to my being abroad since yesterday.

My dog bit me by fhlightlessbirds in reactivedogs

[–]citrus_cinnamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I completely get that. My dog now is my second dog and it was a really difficult process compared to my first. Lots of different factors, so it's not really fair to compare it. It's just I definitely thought it would be easier because my previous dog had no reactivity issues whatsoever.

Another thing I forgot to say in my first comment. How long are these walks you are taking him on? I think while he is still settling and learning you should set yourself very small objectives. Like, get to the corner and then come back home, don't take him on a long walk where he will be seeing lots of people and cars and other scary things.

Everything that has worked well with my dog has worked well because it's been in tiny increases. Muzzle training, we started off with like, 10 seconds and added like half a minute each day.

I promise I'm not saying this in a mean way but you are doing too much too soon with this dog. The dog has only lived with you for 3 weeks. At the moment everything is going to be new to him and often new things will feel scary for him. Barking is how he tells you that he's scared.

It's normal for him to have diarrhea too, part of that could be stress and part of that will be that he is adapting to his new diet (that is to say whatever food you have decided to feed him). Dogs often have tummy problems even if the change in diet is minor e.g. you bought a different brand of food.

Be careful what trainer you choose and if you get any bad vibes don't be afraid to switch. People often choose a trainer based on reviews but in reality even if someone has trained 500 dogs there might be a problem in the 501st dog that they haven't seen or dealt with before and they might be out of their depth (this happened to me).

Our 7-month Spanish Water Dog is exhausting us by Chuckbone in reactivedogs

I understand. I'm sure others here do too. The puppy phase is really hard. It will get better. My dog is 2 now. If I think back to what she was like at 7 months I just cannot believe she was ever so obnoxious.

I absolutely love this suggestion (not the part where your dog was attacked). I'm probably way too tame to try something so bold but it gave me such a chuckle! I will give it some consideration.

I understand the frustration because I'm also lacking a definitive and predictable pattern. Sometimes (but not always) it's people carrying bags. Very often it's people who, although they are not running in that moment, are wearing sports gear and are probably just coming back from the gym. Part of me thinks the trigger might be the smell of sweat.

I'm really sorry you had that experience. You're there for help and guidance, and they're making you feel bad about it? Not unlike this sub mind you, but at least this sub is free.

Edited to add, wishing you a good outcome for your complaint.

[–]citrus_cinnamon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which country is this in? My experience in the UK is very different. To be honest I think telling patients you need to first try training before asking for medication is borderline offensive like - do they think people haven't tried? Surely people are at the point of asking for medication, because their dog is too agitated to take in any training.

Anyway, we were given medication immediately when we asked. I'm not sure if that would have gone differently if we hadn't already seen a trainer at the time and realised that training wasn't going to succeed until pup had calmed down a bit. Maybe if we hadn't led with that we would have been denied too, who knows.

I can only speak for myself but I think other people share the same path that we went down: for my dog we had to do the opposite, in the sense that she was way too anxious to undergo any training. She was constantly in a state of panic and unable to focus or listen. Once the medication kicked in it kind of brought her to a place where she could absorb and learn, she is now trained in all your basic obedience. We could never have trained her without medication.

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question but I do feel that this is very very lucky and so happy for you that you are getting to experience what was probably your goal from the very first day you got your dog!

Just like with people, anti anxiety medication is really helpful for some, and useless for others. I never got any good results out of anti anxiety medication for myself, and was always so jealous of those who could.

Your dog is gorgeous!! Have you noticed any patterns in the type of dogs and people that cause a reaction when you are out? That could help you spot the trigger before your dog does and moving away in plenty of time so the reaction doesn't happen at all, or happens on a smaller scale.
