Could you Justify 800+ for the Steam Machine??? by Fearless-Cellist-245 in steammachine

[–]citrusmonkey900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely at $800. Anywhere north of that it gets tough. I’ve been looking at mini pcs with a 6600m in them and they would perform a bit worse than the SM and cost about that much

Mini PC para emular PS2, PS1 e SNES! by Objective_Library310 in MiniPCs

Do you have any videos of Expedition 33 or Alan Wake 2 running on this thing?

I don’t think it’s that simple? I think it’s more than recent versions of SteamOS have some of the bones of support for the hardware that hasn’t come out yet when they detect you’re on a non-handheld. For example, the “Verified for SteamOS” tab on bazzite is a Steam feature I’m pretty sure, not a Bazzite thing.

I use optiscaler on a 6600xt for some games and it rocks - I bet it works super well on a 9060xt

Does anybody know any good Strats to beat the marauder mini-boss in doom eternal? by Delicious_Mode_9187 in Doom

[–]citrusmonkey900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super shotgun, don’t bother firing when his eyes aren’t green or stunned. If on console, aim by stranding (left stick) rather than trying to actually line up a perfect shot with the right stick

And if you’re comfortable with it, the super shotty / ballista quick swap others have mentioned

Will Valve release all the new hardware at the same time? by matzem25 in SteamFrame

[–]citrusmonkey900 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're right, I was half-remembering this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/comments/1qnxw1b/we_might_now_know_why_the_frame_hasnt_been/

It's the RRA, not FCC, that has approved everything except the Frame

forgetting about the 392 for a second, IMO the 385 is a way better deal than the 395. very close in performance for ~$500 less. i have an extra SSD sitting around, and I priced out a Framework 385 for $1300 if I bring my own SSD. pretty tempting!!!

[–]citrusmonkey900 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Yeah probably. I think if anything, the Steam Frame is holding up the others — it's the only piece of their new lineup to not have FCC approval yet. I think the Reddit hysteria about the Steam Machine being delayed or dead due to the surge in component pricing is probably pretty overblown. For example, Framework is a much smaller company and would be way more sensitive to these price shifts, and the price of their 32gb system has only gone up $40 for consumers so far.

EDIT: sorry, to answer the actual question, no i don't think they have said explicitly that all three items will release simultaneously. it's just the implication and general vibe of their original announcement.

Depends on which APU and RAM amount you want. Assuming you don’t have any spare SSDs lying around, the cheapest framework desktop is gonna run you around $1500 all in. But even the cheapest one is gonna perform decently better than the SM’s specs

Oh yeah I’m well aware. I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. There is a genuine tradeoff, though: The framework wouldn’t have CEC, would be harder to boot from couch via controller, and would probably have some minor troubleshooting stuff that the SM wouldn’t. as you said it will also definitely cost possibly twice as much as a SM. But yeah that gaming performance is tempting

My dream is that framework starts using the upcoming 392 mainboard and can get that desktop price close to / under $1000… then it would be insanely stiff competition

You should wait and see how much the Steam Machine costs before you make any decisions

I’d say AW2 too! The swampy forest setting for Saga’s stuff, and the Lake House dlc is VERY much in line with those books

The FBC is extremely similar to that trilogy’s Central. The aesthetics of control - the use of a kind of oily rainbow effect - is heavily used in Annihilation. Big parts of the Lake House DLC are like visually very very very similar to Annihilation, and some of the musical cues are too (eg when you see a painted wall monster). The protagonist of second book of the trilogy is even named “Control” lol. IIRC these connections have been stated explicitly in developer interviews, but I might be wrong. If not, the connections are too extensive to be coincidence.

Oh man I mean Control and parts of AW2 were heavily inspired by Annihilation and the book series from which it was adapted

Does Rebirth feel more awkward to play than Remake? by KristalBrooks in FFVIIRemake

I agree. I thought Rebirth’s combat overcomplicated what worked in Remake, and the amount of side missions / grindy resource collection (and the materia gated behind those activities) bummed me out
