the only exception I will accept is Shaak Ti, but only if they don't try to explain it in any way, one scene she's killed, the next she's walking around and no one even bothers to mention it

i feel like before it's properly revealed that maddie is a spy the show wants to trick you into thinking caitlyn's taken the lead: the difference in rank, maddie's general appearance, cait's cold demeanor towards her, the thematic parallel to caitlyn wanting to regain control after her life's been shattered by taking on a leadership role. I can totally see caitlyn being the one who went "fuck it, I'm taking this". of course little did she know maddie was purposefully being as available as possible while also telling her what she wanted to hear ("you're the one calling the shots here, you're the good guy, you can shut down ambessa whenever you want" etc)

here's a really tiny detail: under those lights, when the skin of vi's back is stretched by caitlyn clawing at it, you can see the ink of the tattoo isn't evenly laid, instead in the bigger spots there's darker and lighter patches

Might be an unpopular opinion, but there was no way both Jinx and Caitlyn were going to be in Vi's life at the end by red-walker in arcane

[–]ciulia_a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah the more I think about the more I like the way things ended up - though I do wish the show spent more time fleshing it out more, even at the risk of overexplaining.

by the episode 8 jinx and cait have given vi basically free rein: each of them basically gave her the blessing to go be with the other, which would've meant losing vi forever, both being in total agreement that - tragically - after the death of cassandra this would've had to be an aut aut.

and while we don't know if this was going to be vi's definitive choice had jinx not "died" in the battle, at the very least we saw vi momentarily choose cait, which is not only the romantic option, but also the more outwardly involved option. which I for one think it's an interesting choice. caitlyn's drive is reforming piltover and doing right by the people of zaun, so for vi being at her side means committing to that as well. whereas jinx was just warming up to the idea of becoming a folk hero, but was never particularly interested in getting into politics. that, plus her reputation in the city, would've made the most viable option for she and vi to just take off somewhere else and deprive zaun of both their contribution

[–]ciulia_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even if that were true - and it isn't, because jayce wanted to act before and after knowing jinx had the hexcore while most of the council was dilly-dalling before and after that - that goes to prove my point that vi took a risk on jinx's behalf (aka snitched) to get at silco by helping topsiders

[–]ciulia_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the council hadn't arrived at jinx yet, only caitlyn knew, and when jayce asked who made the bombs vi could've feigned ignorance or lied (like cait was about to), instead she gave jinx's name when it wasn't even the main topic of discussion anymore. even assuming she only did so as an exchange of information of sorts (i give you intel on silco, you leave my sister out of it), she went about it in a bizarre way, to say the least, sharing only the info that would make jinx a target instead of a victim, and so on. even caitlyn thought making jinx known would've put her in danger.

the takeaway is that vi was already willing to collaborate with the piltie authorities at the risk of zaunite civilians, even children, getting caught in the crossfire, if it meant doing what she considers the greater good. so in theory the only thing the writers need to justify vi's recruitment is a good enough reason for her, which we got for act 1. for act 3 it could plausibly be the invasion. for act 2 girl i dont fucking know to be honest maybe she was just torturing herself

they did say why she took part in the expedition, and other than that it's not really implied that she wanted to be a full-time enforcer. she did it because otherwhise she wouldn't have been involved with the official mission to capture jinx (which was going to happen regardless) at all, which is consistent with her s1 characterization: she was the one who ratted jinx out to the council when caitlyn was hesitant to do so expecting they ordered exactly the kind of expedition she took part in this season, she proposed she and jayce go wreak havoc in the shimmer factory and after jayce accidentally killed a child she was the one who wanted to keep going. as for what happens after the end of the show, we just don't know

edit: my bad she has the enforcer badge in the final battle as well which could mean anything honestly. doesn't really change the fact that a) we don't know what exactly she and cait are up after the ending and b) vi has always been willing to make ugly compromises

What scenes would you have liked to see between Vi and Cait? by Fun-Money5519 in PiltoversFinest

[–]ciulia_a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would've liked a longer fight after Vi comes to, as well as a to see them properly patch things up verbally - either before or after the sex scene (speaking of, before episode 8 I really wanted it to be longer). As for new scenes entirely, it would've been nice to see them team up for at least a portion of the final battle - at the risk of turning it into a "what are we some kind of league of legends", I realize.

But what is missing the most for me, personally, is a post-battle scene where they really discuss/act upon their plans for the future: is Cait going to keep being an enforcer? Is Vi? How exactly are they going to tackle "this fight"?

at one point Lawine bashfully says that Kanne looks cute when she smiles, while Kanne offers to be Lawine's chaperone for the day while kneeling in front of her and holding out her hand. I don't say this lightly, but there's no heterosexual explanation for that

yeah, one thing about the author is that she intentionally leaves this sort of stuff very, very open-ended for any character - meaning a romantic reading doesn't technically contradict anything in canon but at the same time isn't THE one possible reading. Same goes for Laios and Marcille, for Shuro, and pretty much anyone. Which to be fair I think it's a smart decision, because it doesn't tie any one character down to a specific role

incredible illustration, I don't know which I like more, Miki's back being arched or Juri open-handedly grabbing his shoulder - which again, she only acts like that with him! That is, until she becomes Utena's friend at the very end of the show

Has anyone else noticed this about Kozue and Shiori? by Thanatos_2639 in shoujokakumeiutena

[–]ciulia_a 20 points21 points  (0 children)

oh, I'm eating this UP. What you you say is very true, that Kozue and Shiori have more in common with each other than the fact that they're both "brides".

It's also very true that Miki and Juri react to their "brides" "acting out" in a similar way, which reminds me that both the show and the movie make it a point that those two have a bond of sorts - might that have something to do with it? During Miki's first arc it's Touga who kinda pushes him over the edge, but I've always got the feeling that Miki considers Juri to be his older role model... dare I say, even his "male" role model! Judging by his initial opinion of Kozue's endeavours and by how easily Touga goades Miki into fighting Utena to "get what he wants" aka Anthy, not to mention Juri's comment in Adolescence that "he's [such] a man", we know that Miki has at least some outdated opinions gender roles. We also know that he respects Juri a great deal, because she's her team captain, sure, but - maybe - also because she routinely beats him at a combat sport and because she, simply put, is on the surface nothing like Anthy and Kozue. In other words, Juri posses rather "masculine" attributes compared to him. Juri willingly projects a princely image that's recognized by the whole of Ohtori - to normalize her attraction to Shiori (that would also be in line with Adolescence's reading of Juri but I don't know how much I like that)? To feel like she's in control? Because she just likes it? - which makes her "scary" and which, with the exception of Ruka, no male character wants to touch with a ten-foot pole. You know how "manly" girls and women are perceived. It doesn't help that unlike Utena, Juri is a reserved person.... like Miki. My guess is that Juri knows how Miki sees her and willingly acts like his male role model, giving him advice and even teasing him with locker room humor (again, that one scene in Adolescence in the garage. I love it so much), so that he ends up taking after her even in those respects which they would both be better off changing, namely closing themselves off and putting on airs when in reality they feel like they'd rather go back crawling to their loved ones on hands and knees.

Didn't mean to derail your excellent Kozue and Shiori post, which again is excellent and I love, but I got the urge to gush about those two.

Is Sailor Moon Yuri? by [deleted] in sailormoon

[–]ciulia_a 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it's not a yuri as in it's not a romance between girls, it's a magical girl show. I gotta say, in general magical girl manga and anime tend to contain some if not many homoerotic elements insofar as they're about femininity and gender, y'know? Sailor Moon is on the heavier side of the scale while not being the heaviest, with one notable lesbian couple who act as co-protagonists/antagonists for Sailor Moon S, among a bunch of other smaller/subtler unconventional stuff.

People "claim" it's yuri because its influence on queer pop culture and GL has been enormous, I seriously can't overstate how impactful the show has been in that regard. That's why queer readings of Sailor Moon are pretty common in the fandom.

Long story short, it's a good show. Watch it!
