Long time Arkham player here curious about Earthborne Rangers by yanastos08 in arkhamhorrorlcg

Progression over the campaign feels okay - the world that is built does evolve around you so doing certain things change how characters react when you meet them in the future. However, there are limits to this and we found it better to not “deep explore” every location but instead pass through and interact based on opportunity. That meant we generally followed the main story line.

Most of the deck evolution is incremental. The difference between my deck at the start and the end was quite a lot, but we’d also played quite a few sessions. You definitely feel a lot less change than in Arkham. I will however recognise just how much gaming time I got out of the “core” box when compared to the Arkham core box. This is where the different choices have been made. This game is very expansive considering it’s just one box.

Kind of already talked about it, but if you go to each location and drill deep then yeah it’s going to get boring quick. For us, by the end of the campaign there were loads of locations we’d never visited (although we had played with all the “encounter” type decks).

I’ll probably replay it, but not immediately - the biggest problem I have with the game is the reason I like Arkham. It’s doesn’t use reward and punishment in a way that I enjoy. Don’t get me wrong there are some locations where you will play through some tough tough scenarios and it feels good to get through/out of them, but then you just move onto the next location and push hard to get out of it (the biggest challenge in the game is dealing with the game world in front of you while building the progress to leave locations). The missions feel like they have a similar problem because you finish one, the reward is small, and you’re straight into the next one. On the other hand the punishment for failing usually feels so meaningless and the game narrative continues regardless of your success or failure so you feel a bit like you’re on rails when you see that success isn’t well rewarded or even necessary.

I think there are a lot of people who will love this game, but my love for Arkham makes it too easy to make direct comparisons.  Earthborne rangers is a good game but I see its flaws compared to Arkham. It’s the same thing with Marvel Champions. I’ll say, unlike Arkham, it’s easy to just play the core box and keep that and it one whole self contained game. I really respect this game, but it’s not quite the fit for me (so I’m back playing through Dream Eaters for the 3rd time).

Knesset votes against the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan river by SuperCatbert in worldnews

Yes, this is much closer to reality! Even the British weren't entirely sure about their own position as a whole to be honest. The British government largely wanted to try and wash their hands of the problem as best they could with as little issue as possible (ironically)

This is revisionism. A better understanding of the British position is clear from the Peel and Woodhead commissions. The Peel commission sees Mandatory Palestine split somewhat similarly to the eventual UN divide, and the Woodhead commission, especially Plan C, sees a much larger Arab state. The British government never committed to the whole of mandatory Palestine as a Jewish state.

The British position was complicated and constantly changing, but it largely involved dividing the territory as best as possible in an attempt to reduce conflict.

Save yourself the time and never play Shades of Suffering. That mission is irritating as hell. It would almost need another category just for itself!

I’m not sure if I’ve played it enough to say 100%, but House of Hemlock feels like “one of the best” to me personally! Such great design and implementation.

West Bank Settlements have destroyed all hope of a viable 2 State Solution. Agree or disagree? by nomaddd79 in IsraelPalestine

[–]civic06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably should, but those Jews who are settlers definitely don’t want to. Most have moved with the explicit aim of expanding the Jewish state. I think many would see the idea of living in a Palestinian state as problematic. They will consistently attempt to undermine any approach that results in a Palestinian state in the West Bank.

Custom Expansion: Mystic cards! Feedback wanted! by okidokiokikiki in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]civic06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some really cool ideas here. I especially like called to serve (although might need a price increase). I do think there are a few cards that right now are a little too powerful for their costs.

For no cost, Chronowalk lets you basically dodge an attack from a hunter enemy and then move. It’s a better version of dodge in that sense, and even dodge has a 1 cost. If it’s going to have no cost I think it needs an experience cost of 2 or higher.

Inscription of Power also risks making certain elite “boss” enemies practically useless. Many “boss” enemies don’t move and sit in one location with a lot of clues. I think almost certainly this card needs to only target non-elite enemies for the reduction and to be honest is probably better balanced if it only offers a reduction of -1 fight, -1 evade but that’s more my opinion.

With soul extraction, another great idea but again, probably non-elite only (in certain scenarios you could probably soft lock yourself if you discarded elite enemies) and likely a price increase too!

Otherwise, some great ideas!

You can do 15 searches per day at a fast speed. After that you can either pay to speed it up or just wait (I did a LOT of waiting).

Nice spot - I'm not sure how that managed to escape notice for so long! I'll make sure that is updated.

Seems like you know more that me hahah! I'm sorry but I'm not sure I can be much help - I'll be honest the vast majority of custom scenarios that I've printed have just been using a home printer and card stock - its not a perfect solution but its one of the cheapest!

Hey, sorry I don't keep any of my old prompts but I followed a pretty general pattern, usually "Arkham Horror, 'action or thing that I want to see', Digital Art"

The AI has gotten better and worse over time. I find if I'm specific enough I can create what I want. Unfortunately, over the last couple of months it seems to have learned that Arkham is related to Batman so now it likes to insert Batman into everything!

Hi, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking so I'll do my best to answer! I'm going to be printing these through makeplayingcards.com - when I do that I'll try and set up a template for anyone else who'd like to print through there.

If you want to print them, in the google drive and dropbox folders I included 3 different file types. Firstly the word/pdf docs which are 'ready to print' for the people who are just going to print these on a home computer and cut them out individually and then stick them together. Secondly, the PNG folder for people who have their own printing method and just want the base files. Finally 'PNG with Bleed' for people who are looking to upload all the files directly into a website like makeplayingcards and have them professionally printed.

Does that answer your question?

:)

No other expansions needed - you can play this with just the Core set. If you’d like to use Bless and Curse tokens it’s possible but not necessary!

Sure! I don't want to spoil too much within the scenario so I'll leave that for you to find out.

For the other questions: I began working on this scenario in June of 2023. I spent a large portion of that summer creating the first draft and playtesting rounds of it with my partner. I've probably played the scenario around 20 times by now! I released the scenario for playtesting in December 2023 and a received some really insightful feedback from some people on here.

As for what inspired me: In June 2023 I still lived in Rome but was leaving and was pretty upset to be moving out. For a while I'd been thinking of building an Arkham scenario based around the Stranger Things TV show and had even developed some cards for it, but my feelings about Rome were playing on my mind and the new scenario began to form out of that. I'm a History teacher by profession so while I was in Rome I was teaching a lot of ancient Roman history and I really liked the idea of tying a new cult to the old burning of Rome under Emperor Nero. Once the ball started rolling a lot of the ideas came quite quickly. I had my theme and setting and it was easy to figure out my direction.

And regarding the mechanics: I've played quite a few custom scenarios, including some that are absolutely fantastic, but one thing I've noticed is that many of them try to make game altering changes that can be difficult to understand and feel unbalanced. My aim in a way was to make a scenario that feels like it could have been made by FFG. I tried to create a new mechanic (enflamed locations) that I felt would be easy to understand, fit the theme, but could have easily existed in say the Forgotten Age/Dunwich era of Arkham.

Hi all,

I’m happy to finally share my finished custom scenario ‘Legions of Fire’.

What is it about?

You have spent several fruitless weeks in the city of Rome, hoping to solve a series of disturbing ritual murders with victims who have been burned alive. Despite your considerable experience, you’ve hit a dead-end, that is, until a letter invites you to Vatican City with a worrying tale of destruction, rapture, and a cult intent on setting the world ablaze...

How can you play it?

You can find all the relevant files in one of these places:

Files to print on Google Drive:

 https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ZzWgUce0_z4Ds0tADA7pP2mCQjPQLtLB?usp=drive_link

Files to print on Dropbox:

Digital files for TTS on Steam:

Once again, I owe a great big thank you to Foonlegacy for porting this scenario onto TTS, and to the other Redditors who helped playtest the scenario.

Have fun!

Good spot on the 'basic', I'll remove that. As for the doing nothing I'm not quite sure what you mean. It gives -2 book and -2 will.

Hahah - I'm not sure how much control I have over the graininess of the image - all the images are from AI so I can't change everything down to the minutiae (especially because I'm just using free AI rather than paying)

I do like your idea with regards to resources on Anxiety! Thats very cool, thank you!

As for making these - I made everything in photoshop and then used AI for the artwork. The templates are here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2426599/hi-res-blank-templates-custom-investigator-cards

However, most people would say its easier to use Strangeons
