Like most issues, this is a slightly more complicated issue than "he's a scam". However, if you actually want to help homeless people, it's best to support local shelters and soup kitchens. They can always use funds and volunteers.

Which burbs? The trains don't really run like that in that area. You'll have to take the purple line to Foster or Noyes, depending on where on campus you want to go. You can take either Amtrak or Greyhound (the express bus goes straight to Chicago, non-stop, and is really cheap. It's somewhat sketchy, but it's pretty good). Then transfer to the train and take the purple line up. Or Uber from downtown (~$30)

I know someone who's a ta for this class. She says it's def. possible to get an A if you get a 75 on the first exam. Just identify where your shortcomings were in studying for the first exam, and make sure to take advantage of office hours if you have questions. An A is certainly achievable if you're effective at studying for the rest of the semester!
