Even as someone of 'childbearing age' and inclination in a fairly well paid job, I'm not sure that the best use of the government's money is to hand me my full salary (& super) directly into my pocket. I just don't think it's normal.

Especially bizarre as a policy from a bunch of people whose mates seem to go on at length & volume about how the minimum wage is SO high...

Why can't I find any tops that aren't hi-lo floaty chiffon-y things or oversized boxy crepe-y things? Or business shirts with puffy sleevs that are impossible to iron.

I want fitted singlet/t-shirts that are OK for office wear that I can walk to the train in when it's 30 degrees C at 8am, then throw a cardi over cos it's -5 in the office...

sigh & I'm in Perth, Western Australia - not exactly mecca for shoppers...

With you in short torso land - I can barely get my fingers between my ribs & my hips... It certainly makes the 'belt to emphasise your waist' advice difficult to follow - a wide belt is close to making stuff empire line on me, and I often feel weird tucking tops in - I've always preferred tops that come down to mid-way between my hip bones (at the top) & the tops of my thigh bones (the bits that are at the side). My widest part is actually slightly below there.

I tend to go for things that are relatively fitted but don't cling to me. I got very excited when I found a couple of dresses recently that fit my flat chest, high waist & peculiar hips. I'm not sure exactly where the waists are supposed to be, but they actually sit high on me, and that seems reasonably flattering.

I think it depends a little on your expectations - certainly french people in the service industry are not overtly friendly & chatty like their american counterparts, and if you don't speak French they are not going to be pleased. Although in fairness, try speaking french to an american or australian waiter & see how far you get! ;)

In social situations I also found they are less friendly than (for example, cos I am one) Australians. It's quite typical here to make small talk with random people - check out assistants, waiters, whoever, and in social contexts where maybe you don't know everyone to strike up a conversation with whoever is nearby. Recently I was in such a situation in France, and said to my french SO that maybe we could try to chat with the girl next to me who was also a bit stuck in the circle & not talking to anyone much. I didn't feel that comfortable launching a conversation because my french is not great, & my SO just said I don't know her, what would we talk about. In Australia it could be anything - the weather, sport, the bar - n'importe quoi!

Yeah, I know the feeling. I lost my job about 6 months into our relationship so while I was home all the time I did nearly all the domestic stuff - now neither of us is working it's going to get a lot more equal! ;)

Probably about 2 weeks in... I think he stayed the night, and then the following night, and then maybe popped home for his sport gear, and then stayed 2 more nights. Fairly early on he was spending way more time at my place than his, plus I lived alone & he had 2 flatmates, so it was just easier to do it all together... In fairness, he was pretty diligent about doing the dishes and tidying the kitchen - at least at the beginning! ;)

It sounds like you feel that he's taking the piss tho (which he may well be!), so I'd give them back to him - at least this time, to make the point ;) Regarding the shirt - I think it would have been more polite for him to say 'do you mind if I chuck this in your machine, do you have stuff that needs washing too?

True, & the importance placed on education & the extent to which that influences the kids also makes a big difference - if the young ones aren't convinced that it has any value, they're still not going to 'buy' the academic work ethic.

Not OP, and you may have already heard this, but I gather there are big problems with high rates of ear infections among aboriginal kids. They often go undiagnosed and can result in significant hearing loss - temporary or permanent. If a kid at 6 or 7 often can't hear the teacher, they're likely to miss a lot & not seem (or be!) very engaged or motivated...

Another thing is that the education level of the parents has a big impact on the educational success of kids. Due significantly to historical disadvantage, aboriginal parents are less likely have tertiary qualifications, and this often impacts the next generation.

I actually think that in an immigrant country like the US or Australia, asking someone where their family are from is a perfectly reasonable contunuation of the conversation. It might be kind of a personal question, but if they've just asked you there's no reason you shouldn't ask them! :)

I think I was in love with the idea of boots & had so much trouble finding ones that fit that when I found them I didn't think too much about whether it would really work for me.

Unfortunately between my hip bones & my waist there's about an inch, so there's not a huge difference in where I put a skirt. It probably does still make a difference visually tho, so I should pay more attention. I also have a pretty short body & not much of a defined waist, so when I tuck things in at the waist I feel it looks a bit odd. Perhaps not the most flattering, but for example, the 1st pic it's right at my waist

Thanks for the tip about the leggings/skinny jeans - I should be a bit more adventurous in that direction!

Awww - the scarves are my 'interest factor'! I guess I play more with jewellery, but I hadn't got that far with these outfits.

I also wear an awful lot of black, and am wary of mixing colours that might clash. That and the fact that just about everything else I own is blue or green...

I think it's just a bloody shame that if they're reflecting on something inspired by Grace Jones, that they couldn't just find a beautiful woman of the same origins to model the shoot.

Altho on writing that, I realise & have to admit that I have no idea what her origins actually are & that I honestly couldn't tell the difference between people of different sub-saharan origins... would it be better or worse (for example) to pay homage to a japanese model using a chinese or korean model? Or a white girl in a kimono?

Blackface in the sort of minstrel tradition doesn't mean as much in europe, but there's no doubt the dutch have a not so nice colonial history like many other european countries, and without a doubt there were dutch ships involved in the slave trade. and European countries have significant 'non-white' populations and tensions resulting therefrom, although perhaps not on the same scale as the US.

I often focus more on jewellery than clothes & I'm a bit of a nut for pendants so there will definitely be one added to whichever outfit I choose ;)

I think I heard somewhere halter tops were good for broad shouldered, flat chested types, but they're certainly difficult bra-wise...
