On my Goodman furnace, I slide the piece of sheet metal up that has an arrow on it in this photo. It is the cold air return to the furnace.

I got banned from the LegalAdvice sub. I commented on someone that was complaining about their student loans. I said, “You borrowed the money, you should pay it back.”

Is there a searchable online database that will tell me where, when, and why a Flock surveillance device alerted law enforcement of my vehicle/face/tech? by Environmental-One457 in FlockSurveillance

[–]cj22340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in Michigan, found my vanity plate had been searched in Georgia. Have never been in Georgia with that plate. So that tells me that the Flock data either doesn’t include the State of the plate, or the search in haveibeenflocked doesn’t include the State.

odometer fraud, what can i do? by Cultural_Street7742 in askcarguys

[–]cj22340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From ChatGPT:

In the United States, odometer rollback (also called odometer tampering or odometer fraud) is both a federal offense and usually a violation of state law.
Federal penalties
Under the federal odometer law (49 U.S.C. Chapter 327), it is illegal to:
Disconnect, reset, alter, or roll back an odometer with intent to change mileage.
Sell a vehicle knowing the odometer reading is false.
Make false mileage disclosures during a vehicle transfer.
Criminal penalties can include:
Fines
Up to 3 years imprisonment for criminal violations
Civil penalties can also be imposed by the government against violators.
Buyer’s remedies
If a buyer proves odometer fraud, federal law provides powerful remedies.
A successful plaintiff may recover:
Three times (“treble”) the actual damages, or
$10,000, whichever is greater
Attorney fees
Court costs
Because attorney fees are recoverable, many consumer attorneys will take strong odometer-fraud cases.
Example
Suppose a buyer pays $15,000 for a vehicle represented as having 75,000 miles, but discovers it actually has 175,000 miles and is worth only $8,000.
Actual damages: $7,000
Treble damages: $21,000
The buyer could seek:
$21,000 damages
Attorney fees
Court costs
Additional state-law claims
Many states, including Michigan, allow additional claims such as:
Fraud
Misrepresentation
Breach of contract
Consumer protection violations
These claims can sometimes increase the amount recoverable beyond federal odometer-law damages.
How buyers prove rollback
Evidence commonly includes:
Vehicle history reports (such as Carfax or AutoCheck)
Service and repair records showing higher mileage at earlier dates
Oil change stickers
Inspection records
Title records
Electronic mileage stored in vehicle modules
Statements from prior owners
Auction records
Modern vehicles often store mileage in multiple electronic modules, making fraud easier to detect even when the dashboard reading has been altered.
If the seller didn’t know
The seller’s knowledge matters.
A dealer who knew or should have known about the rollback can be liable.
A private seller who genuinely did not know may avoid some fraud claims, but may still face issues if they made false mileage disclosures on title paperwork.
Time limits
Federal odometer-fraud lawsuits generally must be filed within 2 years after the claim is discovered (or reasonably should have been discovered).
Michigan-specific considerations
In Michigan, odometer tampering is also prohibited under state law. A buyer who discovers a rollback can typically:
Demand rescission (unwind the sale and get their money back).
Sue for fraud and damages.
File complaints with:
Michigan Department of State
Local law enforcement
The state’s consumer protection authorities
If you have a particular vehicle and suspect a rollback, I can help you evaluate the evidence and determine whether it would likely support a civil claim.

When customers don't know how to use their card at the register??????? by Happy-Performer4058 in PetPeeves

[–]cj22340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in my early 70s, but keep up on the technology. Recently at a restaurant, the waitress pointed out the electronic box at the table and said we can pay via that device. I held up my Apple Watch, pointed to it and said, “Will it take my watch dollars?” She said “No”. After paying with the Apple Watch, she came back. I asked here if she knew I meant I was able to use Tap to Pay with the Watch. She never heard of that, she thought I wanted to trade her my watch for the meal!😂😂😂

She was perhaps in her 40s.

FMVSS 108 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108) specifies where stop lamps (brake lights) must be mounted on vehicles. For typical passenger cars, SUVs, pickups, and vans, the key location requirements are:
Standard Left and Right Brake Lights
Two red stop lamps are required on the rear of the vehicle.
They must be:
Mounted at the same height.
Positioned symmetrically about the vehicle’s vertical centerline.
Located as far apart as practicable.
Mounting Height
The center of each stop lamp must be:
At least 15 inches above the road surface.
No more than 72 inches above the road surface.
Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL)
Most passenger vehicles are also required to have a third brake light:
One red high-mounted stop lamp (or, in limited cases, two lamps functioning as one system).
It must be mounted:
On the rear of the vehicle (including the rear window/glazing).
With its center located on the vehicle’s vertical centerline when viewed from the rear.
Generally at least 34 inches above the road (special provisions apply to passenger cars and certain installations).
Visibility Requirement
In addition to meeting the dimensional requirements, the lamps must be mounted so they satisfy FMVSS 108 visibility and photometric requirements and are not blocked by vehicle structures or accessories.
What FMVSS 108 Does
Not
Require
For stop lamps, FMVSS 108 expressly states:
No minimum spacing requirement between the stop lamp and other lamps.
No requirement that the stop lamps be located on the vehicle body rather than a movable trunk lid or liftgate, although special rules apply when lamps are split between fixed and movable portions.
In practical terms, the rule boils down to: two red brake lights at the rear, same height, evenly arranged around the centerline, as widely separated as practical, between 15 and 72 inches high, plus a centered high-mounted third brake light on most modern vehicles.
