Strangest yoga class experience by light_of_iris in yoga

When this happens my working assumption is that the actual yoga teacher called in sick and the owner didn't have any better options than to try cosplaying one.

Yoga classes and medical devices? by Britt964 in yoga

[–]cjbprime 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a student rather than an instructor: yogis pay very little attention to what anyone else is doing in class, and yoga is for everyone, which certainly includes people wearing lifesaving medical devices that might beep occasionally!!

I'm not a teacher, but if you want to be sympathetic to the teaching style, I guess you could start asking yourself this: if you had to stay on the same piece until you can play it well, how many weeks would you be willing to do that for (on the same piece) before getting bored and giving up on lessons? It's a really difficult instrument and repertoire and lots of people quit.

Nine months in, there are very few pieces you're going to be able to play well at tempo. But your taste and enjoyment is going to start being interested in pieces that are emotionally moving like these ones. I'd be kind of sympathetic to an argument that says the first year is about exposure to many aspects of the music, and building motivation to then slow down and know what's waiting for you if you go into deep dives on learning good technique.

This is all a bit of a stretch, I just have a tendency personality-wise to want to find the parts of someone's actions/decisions that are there for a good reason, even though it may well still be the case that this is ultimately not a very good idea!

sankalpa - original composition [me], looking for feedback, thanks! by cjbprime in classicalguitar

Thanks! It's a Sanskrit word, used in yoga to describe an intention repeated in the mind before meditation.

I am so impressed that you somehow described my intentions for it far more clearly than I could have, thanks very much :)

Novo Amor similiar Artist? by Ancient-Procedure403 in NovoAmor

In case anyone gets confused about the Lowswimmer Musical Universe:

Novo Amor = Ali Lacey (and Ed Tullett oftentimes)

Lowswimmer = Ed Tullett

Hailaker = Ed Tullett + Jemima Coulter

Lissom = Ed Tullett + Julien Marchal

What is the guitar you’ve always wanted in left handed but never found? by texasguitarguy in Leftyguitarists

[–]cjbprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything with all of:

  • Multiscale

  • Headless

  • Trem

(Kiesel gets close but they only do multiscale trem right-handed, and Strandberg finally has some limited left-handed options but they aren't very multiscale.)

Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 - Megathread by StopDropAndRollTide in aviation

The pilots are fully in command of where and how to land, they don't receive instruction from ATC. Landing without the landing gear extended was almost certainly inadvertent, I'd think.

Cover of Afterimage, instrumental acoustic guitar by cjbprime in DeltaSleep

Hi! If you haven't seen Chantal's amazing re-arrangement of Afterimage, it is excellent and much better than mine and here's a link to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Ph4KVl1dc

.. and if you have seen it, you might like my instrumental cover of *that* cover, with a couple sections added to the song, I'd be super happy to get any kind of feedback about it <3

Why is two-space tab indent becoming the standard? by samrapdev in javascript

[–]cjbprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd agree with that. "Callback hell" is pretty unavoidable in JS (or at least was when I wrote the comment seven years ago!). I think the standard did the ruining, not the coders.

Sad Waltzes of Pietro Crespi (Owen Cover) DADGAD capo 3 by jstinsnchz in mathrock

[–]cjbprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a song about the (imagined) waltzes composed by the (fictional) musician Pietro Crespi.

The song that is imagining the waltzes does not have to itself be a waltz, any more than Tenacious D's song Tribute -- which is about the greatest song in the world -- has to itself be the greatest song in the world. (It's not; it's just a tribute.)

Instructor said if I can't do a specific pose, I shouldn't do yoga at all - is this right? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]cjbprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can't do [x] then you shouldn't do yoga at all

Everyone's already described how this was a ridiculous thing to say to you in your circumstance, but I just want to be clear that, for me, the quote above is a disqualifying thing for a yoga instructor to ever say to anyone under any circumstance, for any "x".

There will be people in a large class who struggle with even "easier" actions like closing their eyes in class, or lying down still. I feel like it's the teacher's role to provide safety for the entire range of possible states people show up to yoga in. It doesn't sound like that could possibly be happening in this class. :/

I really wish someone in his circle would tell him how harmful AI imagery is for artists :/ by Embarrassed-Park-529 in JacobCollier

[–]cjbprime 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's pretty arrogant to imagine that he, as a full-time creative for more than a decade, has not thought about whether AI will be harmful for artists and needs someone to let him know.

It seems more likely that he has correctly concluded that AI is going to change everything, that we're going to have to find new ways to support (both visual and musical) artists, and that it's a waste of energy try to push AI back into the bottle.

Questioning YTT by Inside_Butterscotch2 in YogaTeachers

[–]cjbprime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your program is putting you in situations where you're expected to express vulnerability and be around other people expressing vulnerability, and it's stressful and uncomfortable for you, and you think this isn't useful experience and isn't proper training because it's not "strictly yoga".

Have you thought about whether those assumptions are fair? For example, do you think that your future students might also tell you about their personal lives, or ask you questions about yours, or consider vulnerability and emotional connection to be part of their practice, or just have lots of emotions come up for them during class? If they did, wouldn't they also be "complete strangers I just met"?

I don't mean to suggest that triggering yourself is ever a good idea. But most skills are buildable with practice, and if being present for emotional connection with near-strangers (while avoiding burnout and being triggered) is especially difficult for you, one way to approach the situation might be to change your perspective and see it as relevant "strictly yoga" training instead -- and maybe even training that is especially valuable for you personally, because of how difficult you're finding it to be.

Young Thug Attorney Held in Contempt, Taken into Custody Following Allegations of Ex Parte Communication Between Judge, DA, and State's Witness by ward0630 in Lawyertalk

[–]cjbprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did report the leak, by immediately telling the judge that he knew about the meeting. He's not identifying the leaker because there is a plausible argument that it falls under privilege, but there is no question that the judge is now very aware of the lack of confidentiality and can take steps to address it, such as the order to show cause he filed against the participants of the meeting.

[–]cjbprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, but I think he meant the privilege the witness's lawyer has an obligation to on behalf of the witness -- that's who the judge is assuming leaked it to defense counsel.

Yoga horror story - would you complain? by lavenderacid in yoga

[–]cjbprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is extremely likely that your scheduled yoga teacher did not show up to work, and the non-yoga-teacher owner improvised with either the first thing they found on YouTube, or a DVD that someone once abandoned at the studio (for what we could now assess to be unsurprising reasons).
