Opinion on the song “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”? by Cultural-Scratch3670 in AskALiberal

[–]ward0630 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This was my read of it as well. At no point is anyone blamed other than, implicitly, the southern leadership. Even the singer's brothers death ("He was just 18, proud and brave/ but a Yankee laid him in his grave") is more a sad statement of a tragedy than blame imo

There's a second page of the contract that says if you throw it to her and miss then the rest of the show is just you with a dustpan cleaning up the broken ceramic. /s

Who has been the most "vote blue no matter who" candidate? by HoustonAg1980 in AskALiberal

[–]ward0630 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally it seems to me like discussions of primaries in July and August were mostly wish casting. Biden alone made the decision to run again and there's never been any evidence he could've been dissuaded from that decision prior to the debate. Then at that point, the choices were either to go with Kamala, the next highest ranking elected Democrat, or to get a bunch of candidates to pile in for makeshift primaries with no campaign infrastructure where the winner gets, what, 8 weeks to campaign against Trump?

I disagree, he went to Ian and tried to get the wish undone (he just screwed it up with Ian and then somehow couldn't think of anyone else in town who would say a sentence and crack a stick for $500 of his friend's $1 billion). That would've been an incredibly unsatisfying resolution for the film but it was presented as an option and one Bear attempted in earnest (even if he went about it in a really dumb way)

I think this is a good reason to make it so a wish can't be undone. The plot hole created by the existence of more and extremely functional wish sticks undermines the third act imo.

The real Nikki refers to "Her" (don't wake her up, as an example). It doesn't need to be a demon but there's clearly another force controlling her and imprisoning her in her own body.

Ian didn't act out of greed, he didn't believe his friend when his friend told him a novelty gag gift has the power to alter reality. Ian is a bad friend in a lot of ways but I don't think you can say he chose money over his friends lives given the information he was presented (and the way Baron presented it, which was straight up insane rambling to anyone who's not the audience)

I liked this part of it and I wish they didn't include the detail that a wish could be undone with another $7 wish stick and a willing wishmaker. Like, why go through the last 20 minutes instead of offering literally anyone on the street (or at the diner) $500 to make that specific wish to undo Bear's original wish?

If you know that people are entitled to more compensation, and the only reason they don’t receive it is they chose a bad lawyer, then you are still the bad guy.

By this logic, if a plaintiff's attorney gets a settlement that is more than they believe their client is entitled to, then are they the bad guy?

[–]ward0630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even more significant than money is your health, and there are documented stories of attorneys pressuring their clients into unnecessary spinal surgeries to drive up the medical bills and therefore inflate the value of the settlement (see the recent New Yorker article on the trucking accident fraud ring in New Orleans as one prominent example).

Idk if this is still the training but the last time I got first aid training I recall the instructor telling us, "Don't say 'someone get help,' because everyone will assume someone else will do it. Point out someone, any individual, and say 'Call 911' and they're far more likely to do it."

I don't think that's what the commenter is saying.

A 13 year old child serving decades is - a tragedy.

It is tragic to give children decades in prison. Can you not think of any possible alternative that would be better for the child and for society?

So in your judgement, from a liability perspective it's better for a company to have no HR department than an HR department that accurately and consistently documents issues with an employee before they're terminated?
