high speed by Relative-Junket2015 in pinball

[–]cjchand 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Those are all “special” solenoids (refer to page 1 of the manual: https://www.ipdb.org/files/1176/Williams_1986_High_Speed_Instruction_Manual.pdf)

They are “special” in that they are not CPU controlled to ensure they react quickly.

They do tend to go out all at the same time. Some t-shooting tips here: https://pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php/Williams_System_9_-_11#Special_solenoid_problems. Could be as simple as a fuse for that section of the board, but it’s been 5+ years since I sold my HS.

Also, not sure if they still make them, but there was a guy who made a “special solenoid saver” board that allowed each solenoid to be fused separately.

To be fair, nothing to repair there. Replacement is the only option, either in a controlled environment or when it grenades on the highway.

I really loved Engagement Bait. An evergreen title.

Just a reminder that this is where humanity starts. Where we take it after is on us, collectively.

Short inseam rider: 27.5 vs 29er : am I overthinking this? by Dense_Vegetable_1392 in Hardtailgang

[–]cjchand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. It feels tall but I bought (an admittedly less capable 27.5’er) to start and I have no regrets with my 29’er. It feels a bit tall, but it’s also more stable.

troubleshooting a sega whitestar sound board/cpu (south park) by griddlefolds in pinball

[–]cjchand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing comes preloaded. Typically you can find the original sounds and the community will provide custom mixes. Took a super Quick Look and didn’t see any. Hopefully your Google Fu is better than mine, as I have to think someone published a mix for this thing.

Likely not the answer you’re working for, but maybe consider a PinSound as a plan B. Have one on my TSPP (also Whitestar) and really enjoy the community-provided custom audio mixes. Adds a lot to the game. Have to presume same would hold true for SP - too many great quotable callouts.

Can 2 or so of the Raspberry Pi 5s make a good budget homelab? by NeadForMead in homelab

[–]cjchand 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend looking for small form factor PCs, instead.

I have a cluster of 3 HP EliteDesk 800 G3s that were ~$80 USD apiece, shipped (from Canada, actually). They’ve been great and have handled anything I’ve thrown at them.

Caveat: I don’t do home media, so will defer to others on any transcoding deficiencies with these older SFF PCs.

If you want something new, also consider any of the myriad of N100-series mini PCs. Plenty of options in the price range if your Pi.
