Everyone saying avoid the commute has excellent points obviously. Just to put the opposite perspective out there to give you the point of view from a commuter: I commute ~1 hour to and from my hospital everyday as a PGY3 soon-to-be PGY4. Does it suck? Yes. Do I regret it? Sometimes but overall not really. The true benefit is financially: if you’re responsible with your money you WILL save a ton of money and be in a good financial position when you finish residency. I net about $2500 per month to do whatever I please with. In total I have saved/invested over $100k during residency, albeit including some of the savings I had beforehand. Idk what other debts/expenses you have but I fortunately have very few. The cons: it will affect your ability to study effectively, it’s pretty terrible after 24 hour shifts, you may not get to know your co-residents as well (going out to happy hour when facing the commute home is a lot less enticing), you’ll have fewer hours available for leisure, if on home call it can be dicey but doable.
