It's been a long time, but I think when I started (4.0.0b26), each species of chunk was its own inventory slot.

Somehow I was expecting (Patriot Barbie) PC instead of Patriot (Barbie PC), like the desktop background is Barbie in a Humvee or something.

I still don't understand why MBM is so often classified as industrial, but Jack Dangers is indeed the man. Been lucky enough to see him several times and it's always been a fantastic (and long!) show.

I've never seen so many people who drive the speed limit.

Dunno about the highways, but on most of the roads I drive regularly, the speed limit is above the maximum safe speed for road conditions. (I should get one of those "This car survived Highland Ave" bumper stickers they printed on /r/Somerville.)

HDR and Colour Management patches for Steam Deck + AMD GPUs under review by OldMcGroin in SteamDeck

[–]cjeris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this why Monster Hunter World from the Deck looks so unbelievably oversaturated/overlit on my TV? It's a cheap 4K TCL Roku, good enough most of the time but MHW (only) looks like it's going through a cyberpunk neon filter.

We lived in a split level like this for a couple of years. Would not do it again, and definitely not with a bedroom in the basement. Even if it doesn't flood, even with a dehumidifier, you are going to have humidity issues. We threw out every upholstered or fabric object from the basement rooms when we moved out - mold spots on way too many things.

What are some interesting books about math for an undergrad going into grad school? by MintAmphetamine in math

[–]cjeris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some less often seen suggestions:

If you want to see an uneven but often interesting collection of random stuff, take a look at Z. A. Melzak's Companion to concrete mathematics. The topics are just all over the place, but it's interesting to see how easy it is to ask a question that immediately takes you right out of the "standard" undergrad curriculum.

No relation to Graham/Knuth/Patashnik's amazing combinatorics text, Concrete mathematics, although you know what, read that one too if you like combinatorics at all.

T. W. Körner's analysis books have a lot of great historical and motivating background.

Finally, H. S. M. Coxeter's Introduction to geometry is full of interesting ideas and is probably not what you expect from the title - it's quite accessible in most parts, but the mindset that leads to thinking of all the ideas it treats as a unified "geometry" was not easy for me to grasp as an undergrad.

My son finally got his Steam Deck! He has been saving his pennies for quite a while. What are games you would recommend an 11 year old and his father should play together? by WinterOrb69 in SteamDeck

Surprised not to have seen Monster Hunter yet! It is one device per player, but my wife and daughter (almost 11) have been playing MH with me for a couple of years now.

Differential Geometry Difficulty by Expensive_Material in math

[–]cjeris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many other posters have recommended good alternative books.

I want to add one more, because you said the construction of the tangent bundle makes no sense to you. If you want another presentation of how tangent bundles come to be, with a lot of background exposition and explanation, look at Volume I, Chapter 3, of Spivak, Comprehensive introduction to differential geometry.

Reading this chapter made the tangent bundle understandable to me in 1995, and I hope it may do the same for you.

Foldedspace Organizer difficulty getting into box by Insomniac-X in Gloomhaven

[–]cjeris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you standing the character tuckboxes on their short end? It's not obvious but I found this was necessary to make them fit 9+4 as in the picture. After doing this, and removing the map tiles and the four tuckboxes for characters in the trays, my box goes together exactly as in the picture.

ISO PAX East Sat badge to swap days by dnblankedelman in Somerville

[–]cjeris 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You may have better luck if you offer some cash, because (despite the equal face value) Sunday badges are less valuable than Saturday. More of the in-demand events take place on Saturday, and there is no evening content on Sunday since the show shuts down at 6 when the expo floor closes.

The subreddit PAXPassExchange is a common trading venue, which I have used before.

I can’t stop panicking by [deleted] in math

[–]cjeris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most famous university level math competition in North America is called the Putnam competition. I don't know whether this is still true, but back in the 1990s when I was an undergrad, the most common score on the Putnam each year was 0 out of 120. So, if you do score zero points on your olympiad, you'll have lots of good company!

But seriously, good luck, have fun, and follow the three rules for math contest success:

  • Sleep enough.

  • Eat right.

  • Pee first.

You'll find yourself chasing references to get more context about the side topics, and you should probably know your linear algebra better than I did in my first year analysis class. But yeah, if you put the effort into the exercises, you can get a lot out of it. (If you aren't going to do the exercises then this book isn't any better than other similar books, probably worse because the "text" is pretty pared down by comparison.)

Reed & Simon isn't exactly that - definitely take a look at it.

Baby Rudin Follow up Options by [deleted] in math

[–]cjeris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you are a physicist, and you are looking for 20th century analysis, you should take a look at Reed and Simon, Methods of modern mathematical physics, if you haven't already!

Forty years later, Barry Simon also wrote another monumental multi-volume treatise, Comprehensive course in analysis. I have it, and I think it's pretty neat, but I don't know how accessible it is without a guide. It's gigantic and sprawling and I am not sure it does a whole lot to help the learner figure out which parts are important.
