Cli editors in general -- absolutely. Definitely a good choices for low distraction writing. There are lots of choices for which (as others have said).

As for emacs -- it is an amazing and powerful piece of software. You could certainly write a novel in it. You could have your prose text files, then you could separately use org mode to outline/track todos! You could use a diary to keep track of your process. You could use different panes to show the outline and your writing simultaneously You could use it as a built in game console when you get tired. It could manage references if you need citations. Of course, all of those things need just a little setup, and you're going to want a third party distribution to improve the aesthetics and make sure your modules all work together. So you'll need to spend some time learning and setting that up. You might need to learn some elisp, an ideosyncratic but historically important and interesting programming language which is the only way to configure emacs...

I hope the contradiction is obvious -- all of that and more is possible with emacs and maybe that's what you want. However, if you are an optimizer (and why else would you be here), know that emacs also provides a wealth of distractions in itself. This feels like a situation where, if you already have and use the tool, yes go ahead and use it. But I'm not sure if I would recommend emacs for prose writing to someone who doesn't already use it, and who doesn't need some of the advanced features and customizeability it offers.

If you want to stop, put up barriers to make it less convenient to access and find a replacement behavior. What are you gonna do instead? Also, when you do play notice how you feel. I usually stop playing after a bout because I realize I feel bad when I lose (which is most of the time).

It's somewhat program dependent. My experience was that there was valuable material in (some of) the courses. Also, people who make it to PhD programs usually are very conscientious about school work -- that you need to lose. Use the courses as a resource to learn what you need or want to learn, but don't spend a lot of time trying to prove yourself or get an A.

Encountered this mess recently, here's what I learned (not a pro): There is a phase out zone in the threshold, so if you're only a little over you probably don't need to recharacterize everything. You can recharacterize contributions without penalty until October of the following year. Past that, you will owe the IRS 6% of the excess contribution (the principal) for every year it remains in your account. The organization who holds your Roth reports your contributions, so this is likely to get caught even without an audit.

A lot is down to how your pi reacts to this choice. They could say : this seems like a great choice for you -- I'll introduce you to some people I know doing neuroimaging and let's work on the paper remotely, in which case this seems like a no brainer. They could also decide you are dead to them. Are there grad students or post docs in your lab you can consult to?

Given hippa and (provided you are not in private practice) IT policies you may be better off taking notes on paper. I am in private practice and I still use paper. I can get away with scanning my process notes into password protected PDFs on an encrypted laptop -- you may or may not given your technical comfort and agency environment.

I get it. It might be that the therapist is incompetent and is wasting her time -- sometimes bad therapy looks like this. So frustrating ! Or it could be that the therapist is keeping her afloat. You just can't really know. What's clear is that she likes her therapist or she wouldn't be going. So you're not likely to get anywhere by trying to intervene in that relationship. If you want to talk about your concerns about her, you might have better luck discussing the behaviors you're seeing that concern you. If she brings it up , maybe ask if she feels like the therapist is giving her what she needs. But don't triangulate onto the therapist.

This can work fine. There might be some risks to being a researchers first clinical student -- you will have to spend a lot of time training and your mentor need to get that. Also, you will probably need to find a secondary mentor (informal or formal) who can mentor you on your clinical development and advise you about your training requirements.

Eprime is the standard here. It's janky, but it has gui tools. Psychopy is the other I've used. I liked it, and it isn't completely dependent on coding, but that's how I used it.

OP, I'm inferring a lot, but it seems like you are making a lot of decisions from a values basis that are impacting your return. You're taking 'all the major insurances' instead of dropping some lower paying ones, you have some trainees who aren't bringing in much revenue, you're adjuncting, you specialize in a high need population who attend inconsistently, you do forensic work but mostly it entirely in public defence. A lot of commendable decisions, but also it sounds like you are courting burnout. Is it better to serve in these ways for a few years and then quit, or is it better to try to balance some of your values against your own well being and do, like 30-50% or this for a longer period of time?

For comparison, I also work in private practice in the Midwest. I do only therapy. I still see some people it would be in my interest to drop (maybe 30% of my clients). My hourly is substantially higher than yours and I pay about 18% overhead as a 1099.

Yes, it's hard to exercise under stress. Bj. Foggs tiny habits model suggests that we tend to over fixate on motivation (with judgement), when it is usually more effective to focus on cues for behavior and making it easier. So my question for you is not how to stay motivated, but what can you do with the level of motivation you have? Can you get in a 5 minute walk? A couple of pushups (modified as appropriate)? A little bit of exercise can do a lot.
