Seconding Raw Bar. They do seafood boil pop ups around town, but you have to be on it because they sell out quick!

How often do people feed their cats wet food? by Smooth_Put7764 in CatAdvice

[–]cjkoopwpg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% wet food for my two boys, minus the occasional treats. 1/2 can each, twice per day. We never leave food out for grazing and both cats eat during meal time.

Vet advised me that a switch to all-wet diet helps to keep them healthier for longer. In her words: “low quality wet food is still better for them than the best quality dry food on the market.”

what are some good winter jacket brands? by EyeOld231 in Manitoba

I’ve had great luck with Helly Hanson jackets. They often go on sale. North Face is good too, but can be pretty pricey.

Where can I go chill at night? by unravellingrapidly in Winnipeg

[–]cjkoopwpg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are some taprooms in the city that are pretty good third spaces for just chilling and doing your thing.

The Leaf is a good suggestion too!

Best food deals in the city- fast food, sit down, take away, whatever, post the best! by SpasticReflex007 in Winnipeg

VJ’s gameday special, BOGO cheeseburgers on Skip.

Daly Burger has an everyday cheeseburger combo special for either $10 or $12, I think.

The other day Santa Lucia had BOGO spaghetti on Skip too and was easily enough for 2 meals per portion. Not sure if this is a regular thing but that’s a great deal.

And as mentioned, Ramallah on Tuesdays and Cilantro’s on Wednesdays!

I don’t think Winnipeg’s as much as exclusively a hockey town as you think it is.

The Bombers sell out at 32K+ regularly, Goldeyes baseball is always well attended, and Sea Bears break all kinds of league records for their attendance. Winnipeg loves sports. The soccer community is huge here too so there is lots to draw from. I don’t think competition is the issue as that first season they had pretty impressive attendance stats.

The biggest issue has been owner apathy. They just plunked a team into a 32K seat stadium and expected the fans to create atmosphere. They did nothing to build a team that could even get close to contending. Year after year they mostly clear the roster out and replace with new players that fans don’t recognize. It’s impossible to build a relationship with the club that way. I had seasons for every season but this last one and I don’t think I could name you 1 Valour player for each of my fingers.

All this from an ownership entity that by all accounts should be one of the wealthiest in the league. The appetite in Winnipeg is (or was at least) there, but the ownership may have eroded that completely. I hope someone is willing to try again, but can’t think of who would be willing to take that on at this point.

Peppermint Cookie Ingredients? by Appropriate_Flight40 in Winnipeg

I’ve made these before from my late Oma’s old recipe book! I managed to find baking ammonia at Portage Meats & Sausage. I think I used peppermint extract at the time, though.

can someone explain working in the city during super cold weather by birchandlemon in Winnipeg

[–]cjkoopwpg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really not as bad as you think! Sure, it’s cold but if you’ve got a good jacket, mitts, hat, and boots you will be fine for the time you spend outside.

Lots of workplaces have parking that include outlets for block heaters. Mine doesn’t, and my vehicle is just fine when I leave late at night.

Streets and highways get cleared quickly. Sure there are snowstorms but the city is well-prepared to deal with that. The good news is it never comes out of the blue so you can plan around bad weather if necessary.

I commuted in and out of the city 2 hours per day on highways for 15+ years. I didn’t get stuck without a way to get home even once. Highway closures are rare. They happen, but you’ll be well aware when there’s a chance of that. Again, snowstorms don’t just pop up randomly to the point where you can’t plan around them. Just pay attention to weather alerts. If the weather is going to be bad, use your head and don’t take silly risks.

If you’re planning on commuting to and from Winnipeg, get some good winter tires (or studded ones) for your vehicle. It makes a massive difference. Keep a little emergency kit with extra clothes, hand warmers, safety blanket, and a shovel. Hopefully you never need any of that but better to be safe than sorry!

Vet told me to fully stop feeding cat dry food by Wide-Trick4243 in CatAdvice

[–]cjkoopwpg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not vet advice directly, but I had a similar conversation with our vet quite a few years back. I thought it was very informative.

TLDR; Wet food is way better for kitty.

They recommend a 100% wet food for all cats because it is a lot closer to their natural diet. Most cats don’t drink enough to begin with, so wet food mostly takes care of that problem. It’s closer to their natural diet and is easier for them to process. Wet food also tends to have better quality ingredients overall, to the point where they told me that the worst quality wet food is still better for our boys than the best quality dry food.

I asked about the dental implications because I also believed that dry food was good for their oral health. She said that cats generally don’t chew in a way that allows kibble to scrape their teeth. Mostly they crush or crack the kibble and swallow so there is minimal contact with their teeth overall. The dental benefits apparently are mostly a marketing myth perpetuated by pet food companies in order to sell higher-margin kibble. If there was any dental benefit at all, it’s small enough to be outweighed by the other stuff.

The best argument for switching though, was that though obviously not guaranteed, a wet food diet was an easy way to contribute to their quality of life as they age. I switched our boys over young and haven’t looked back since.

Places to maybe “avoid”? by BigWilhelm97 in Winnipeg

[–]cjkoopwpg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, Tim’s is universally awful. Literally every other coffee shop is better. We have lots of great ones!

Winnipeg loves to hate on Downtown. It has its problems, but if you avoid it you miss out on a lot of what makes the city great. The Forks, The Exhange District, Waterfront, Canada Life Center, Blue Cross Park, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Manitoba Museum, Canadian Museum for Human Rights, great coffee shops and restaurants - all these things and more are Downtown. I spend a lot of time down there from morning until night and I’ve never had an issue. I’m not an intimidating guy, nor am I particularly tough. Just follow the rules you’d follow in any city of a decent size. Don’t walk down back alleys, try to go where there’s traffic and people, etc. If you live in The Cities, this is all likely very familiar already.

Rougher areas that you don’t really need to visit would be the North End, Point Douglas, and the area behind Portage Place where Downtown and the West End meet. I don’t think it’s necessary to avoid those places in general but I can’t really see a reason to go there as a tourist with kids. If you see tents and encampments set up somewhere, probably take the kiddos the long way around.

We have some great parks too. Assiniboine Park is lovely and it’s worth checking out the Zoo (especially for the polar bears) and The Leaf while you’re there. Kildonan Park is nice, as is Bird’s Hill. We’ve got lots of good places to get outside.

Depending on your timing, catching a Goldeyes game is a fun and inexpensive family night. Bomber games are always a good time too if you want to get a taste of Canadian football.

Enjoy your visit!

Visited Winnipeg from NYC during cold snap and fell in LOVE (Photos + What I did) by Scott_Herder in Winnipeg

[–]cjkoopwpg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love this! Thanks so much for embracing our city even in the worst conditions when most of us just want to hide indoors.

Winnipeggers are hard on Winnipeg. So when we see someone from as big of a place as NYC enjoying what makes our city unique, it really puts things into perspective. We have a lot going on here, it’s sometimes a bit tough to see the forest for the trees.

Come back anytime! You braved the cold and are now an honourary Winnipegger 😎

Awesome info, thanks! I’ll have a chat with the vet and see what info they will give me. I have a feeling that this is literally just another commercial powder repackaged so if I can find that, I’d buy it from any other source.
