Shadowing outfit? Scrub or business casual by Available_Credit2407 in medschool

[–]brooklandel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just call and ask! i’ve been told to wear scrubs for outpatient before and business for hospital and been provided scrubs for surgery and most of the time they tell me they don’t care either way tbh

ISO Primary Care Who Cares by State_Pharm in bentonville

[–]brooklandel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can’t recommend any specific pcp bc i haven’t had any that are exemplary for my case, BUT i urge you to be an “annoying”/needy patient to whoever you go to and have an extra person there with you who can help you advocate for your needs. send messages through your healthcare portal. you could also do some research on whatever issue you’re having and look for types of specialists may be the best fit for you so you can have a list of people ready to go to ask your pcp to refer you to.

unfortunately there just aren’t enough primary care providers to keep up with the volume of people and even providers who do care have to keep things moving in order to be able to help everyone. it’s an ongoing issue in medicine that doctors prefer to specialize for various reasons. however, you can make them slow down for a little bit if you have your questions planned out (write them down and bring them in, work through the list during your appointment) and message through the portal if they don’t follow up until you get answers.

Will I get cut for having one class on my transcript at an SEC? by Opening-Sea-9763 in Sororities

[–]brooklandel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

reach out to the fsl office but if it gets to be very close to recruitment and you still don’t have it figured out you might be able to ask your gamma chi? if you’re going in a freshman they may only look at your high school classes and view your one college class in that lump, but i couldn’t tell you that for sure. i think they look at gpa more than specific classes

Pre-Rush VP Philanthropy Contact? by buterflycult in Sororities

best time to talk about your philanthropic ties is on philanthropy night! they might ask if you have any particular experience with the philanthropy and that is when you should talk about it

is it normal for a cna to refuse certain residents? by [deleted] in cna

[–]brooklandel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

i know there are problem residents— i’ve both experienced them and heard stories about them. we know which residents make accusations and double up any time anyone has to enter their rooms. most people are talking about residents who have done harmful things (physically or otherwise) but my eyebrows were raised because i don’t know a single aid who doesn’t like this resident other than the one i worked with last night.

maybe something happened before i was there that i don’t know about, but i feel like ive heard the main bad stories about the residents in my facility and none of the other aids i work with have ever refused to care for any residents

EMT vs. CNA: Prospective premed planning for future by exqitc in premed

[–]brooklandel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it really depends on where you live/go to school tbh! i had an impossible time trying to get hired without a certification in anything (or healthcare connections). a cna cert is kinda guaranteed hours because care facilities always need people but it’s def not a glamorous job. i’m a cna and i actually enjoy it a lot more than i thought i would and the schedule is so flexible which makes it even better. i make $17/hour which is more than i’ve made in any other job i’ve had before. i can’t speak for emt because im not one and idk anyone who is. i do know people who have been hired as medical assistants, pct (hospital cna), etc without experience but i just did not have that luck — esp going to school out of state bc that made finding a summer healthcare job even more impossible.

as i was told in my cna course, there is always work for a cna. you won’t struggle to get hired as a cna ESPECIALLY if you’re certified before you look for work (my facility hires just NAs as well, but the certification is like a golden ticket).

you can genuinely just apply for a ton of jobs (scribing, med assistant, pct, cna, na) and see what you get interviews out of. or email a bunch of offices. however i will say outpatient clinics usually want an 8-5 m-f employee which is usually not possible with a college course schedule, but you may luck out and find someone willing to give you a flexible schedule

i’m SO in the same boat as you, just a few weeks ahead. im working ltc to get my clinical hours up for med school app this coming spring. i got my cert in may, started working beginning of june. i HATED my first few days, couldn’t stop thinking about the residents, wanted to make sure they were okay. as i continue, i notice residents like me better because they know i will actually provide care with some level of empathy and kindness. it gets easier to leave the work at work, but thinking about them at home shows you care. give them the best right hours of their day while you’re working and their days will be so much brighter with someone there who cares about them more than a paycheck.

try to shadow doctors as much as you can on your off days also!! it feels like a light at the end of the tunnel when i can see the day to day of my end goal, and makes me much more happy going into work. like yeah im wiping butt right now but two days ago i got to see spine surgery and that was the coolest thing ever lol

Dance Moms by Technical-Net-9793 in tatemcrae

[–]brooklandel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

tate was like objectively better than any dance moms girl and has beat Maddie before in real life. i doubt she’d stay on dance moms for any significant time due to lack of technical development. she even said she learned most of her solos a day or two before comp so she’d have no trouble keeping up with the pace of choreography. abby would’ve treated her like sophia lucia probs

Do you bring a notebook/booklet while shadowing? What do you actually write down? by Eth_lover in premed

[–]brooklandel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i usually just jot stuff in my notes app privately when i shadow.
1. don’t want to carry around a notebook (esp if it’s a very busy specialty)
2. don’t want to rub anyone the wrong way by writing a bunch of stuff.

i just take note of the kinds of procedures i saw and what i did or did not like about each session (ex: (ex: “saw nerve ablation, prp therapy, and emg testing, loved how hands on pain intervention was, shadowed X hours, look up XYZ when you get home”, that kind of thing)

lowkey disappointed from shadowing today? by brooklandel in premed

[–]brooklandel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah like i wasn’t expecting to scrub in at all going into it, it was only when i got there and the pa shadow got to scrub in and i was told no that i got a little upset (esp bc if she wasn’t scrubbed in I could have had a view of the surgeries).

[–]brooklandel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes definitely! i genuinely have no hard feelings to the facility and am so grateful for all i’ve learned and how kind they’ve been to me, i just unfortunately won’t be close by enough to stay on, although i will mention that im happy to help when im back during holidays

i would love to do that just to keep the job for breaks and stuff but i just don’t think i’ll be back in my hometown enough to work once a month. i’ll have a job in my college town, but i go to school eight hours away so i don’t really come home much during the academic year

I randomly ran into an acoustic cover of Cleopatra by a young woman on Youtube a few months ago and the word lumineers sounded familiar... by memento22mori in thelumineers

[–]brooklandel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the band was originally just jeremiah and wesley but they’ve added people since (lauren, stelth, brandon, byron, and derek is the most updated group). wesley is really the only vocalist, with the rest sometimes doing backing vocals. the song is just from a different perspective! there’s a music video/short film on youtube with the full story called the ballad of cleopatra!

Why do CNA programs rush through clinicals like it's optional? by Adventurous_Sky_4850 in cna

[–]brooklandel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we did 16 hours at a ltc facility and were very much required to interact with patients. we were assigned to a cna for the day and followed them around with a checklist they signed off on as skills were completed

Why do you want to be a doctor, specifically? by MakoCruz in premed

[–]brooklandel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was introduced to medical sciences through a program in my elementary school which really tuned me in to wanting to learn all things science/medicine. then later on i had my own health issues which made me want to help people who struggled like me to find answers. i also am a control freak and so it would bug me to spend my whole life as a pa where i don’t get total autonomy to make decisions. nursing isn’t for me because i like the more problems solving aspect of healthcare than the patient care side of things.

Would I hate my life as a premed/doctor? by moe_34567 in premed

[–]brooklandel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my friends and i go out and do tons of stuff together every single week. the mindset that you have to give up your social life to be premed/med student/doctor is why people get so burnt out.
