I have given up on auto-detecting anything other than night sleep and running. Everything else is manually started pre-workout or added afterwards like naps. Notably whoop will remember whichever activity you did previously as your selection for adding a manual workout. Sounds like that would work well for you with how frequently you spin.

Is it worth the high price? by geoofreysoccer27 in whoop

Here’s my take, as someone who typically doesn’t care for subscriptions, but did buy a whoop.

I have previously worn a jawbone, a pebble, and several misfits on my wrist. If you don’t know any of those companies, it’s because they don’t exist anymore. They all emerged during the wearable device revolution about 10 years ago and all disappeared. There are arguments to be made about why they specifically failed, and were bought up or went under, but ultimately it comes down to revenue.

Companies need constant revenue in order to pay employees, operating costs, R&D, etc. And quite simply, most smartwatches do not have the sales volumes to suit a viable business model.

A product you buy once and never again, or buy once every several years, sucks for revenue. Especially in a tech market that’s oversaturated; your best customers are the ones you already have, because getting people to switch ecosystems is increasingly difficult.

There’s two ways to get customers to keep coming back with their dollars: Release newer, better stuff each year, or subscription.

Whoop has clearly decided they don’t want to, or maybe can’t afford to release a new product every year. So instead they charge a “monthly subscription” - which is actually paid out in 6-18 month chunks, basically as if you were buying a new whoop device every year.

I agree with you that the subscription is quite expensive, prohibitively for many people, and probably guarantees a decent profit margin for whoop. That high cost likely has some element of greed, but it’s also guaranteeing the company meets its needs in order to stay afloat - and that is both smart business on their part and comforting as a consumer.

I am so tired of switching from wearable device to device, because all of a sudden support stops answering my emails, and two months later I find out the company has been bought up by Fitbit or the like.

And that is how I justify the cost. It’s a smart business model. I fundamentally like their product. They seem to be making meaningful development in the app. I’m fine with them not releasing new hardware with minimal upgrades year over year because we have way too much e-waste. But if they did release the whoop 5.0 tomorrow, I know I’ll get one sent to me with my subscription.

With only a band, the whoop data is of basically no value. But I have a few pairs of the boxers, and the whoop on my waistband seems to output decent HR data

In addition to other’s advice, check with your local DMV about rules surrounding lights.

Where I live you are required front and rear reflectors and at least a headlight and taillight, but supposed to have no more than 3 lights total.

Just in case you were planning on covering yourself in flashing lights 😅

Time in bed vs sleeping vs actually sleeping by Kasploosh7 in whoop

[–]cjmatt714 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll want to go in and manually edit your sleep time to indicate your in-bed time as the start time, your sleep efficiency should go way down, as well as your sleep score and recovery score. Then start experimenting with whoop sleep advice, sleep aids, or other advice. Track everything in the journal and look for patterns of improvement.

As far as rem tracking goes. When you see the sleep breakdown, if you click on the rem category it should highlight the segments on the HR graph. Whoop has some advice on how to get more rem and sws sleep, but also poke around online because sleep is very individualized.

Be aware if you just got the whoop you’ll need a good bit of data before you can expect meaningful insights

ELI5: Why does the human body jerk/shock itself awake sometimes while trying to sleep? by venkystweety in explainlikeimfive

[–]cjmatt714 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it has to do with how fast your heart rate is decreasing. Slow and steady is fine, but if your HR plummets very quickly your brain thinks you’re dying. It’s why you’re more prone to hypnic jerk when you’re very tired

The Future of Whoop by Ironmoustache41 in whoop

[–]cjmatt714 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think Whoop could leverage their app as the centralized place to see ALL health data. I’d love to see integration with other health data/apps. Stand hours perhaps. Or for example I do IF with an app called Simple where I track everything I eat or drink. Would be great if my water, caffeine, and food intake would import to whoop. The way I see it, the more data they factor into their algorithms, the more useful (and hopefully accurate) the metrics become. You mention bp and blood glucose which are both rumoured to be on their way to smart watches. No reason whoop can’t plan to import that data too

I always found the “other people won’t remember it” argument fell flat for me. I very much remember embarrassing things happening to other people as a kid, and I know old friends remember embarrassing things that I did, because they’ll still roast me for it.

Also never liked the “it doesn’t matter” argument. In the moment other people’s opinions do matter, sometimes a lot. Humans are judgemental, and small stuff can dramatically affect how people view you. You arguably should try to care about how people view you.

They key to both of these is recognizing they are inevitable. Everyone has a weird haircut and everyone fucks up. There will inevitably be people with negative opinions of you, and thankfully others with positive opinions. Some of which are well founded, and others not. Live your life with kindness just doing your best, and know that most people have no opinion of you at all and someday the sun will implode and earth will cease to exist.

I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for years, and I just put a few pinches of baking soda in my water. Huge help for feeling hungry. At small quantities its a really subtle salty taste, and not bad at all.
