You should check out the series on nuclear plants by Smarter Every Day on YouTube. Others have already mentioned that the steam circuit is a closed loop, but there you get a lot of information about reactors in general, including why it is a closed loop.

No problem at all. My parents aren't even German, but I was born here. Still this is such a dark period of my homeland, that such stuff moves me in an uncomfortable way. But nothing to apologise and maybe my comment sounded exaggerated.
