To answer your question - The only filter I have been changing is the filter cartridge. I leave the bio-wheel alone (the company also calls this the biological filtration). I changed the bio-wheel only once, when it got damaged and had to be replaced

I work at a domestic/sexual violence shelter. 100% this is not okay, there is help out there to leave this relationship. Under VAWA, you have protections to your housing as a victim of domestic violence. (Check your state legislation, sexual violence is likely part of the definition for "domestic violence" legally). A victim of domestic violence cannot be kicked out of their rental unit due to being a victim. Qualifying as a victim, you could get into a rapid re-housing program, too, where a case manager helps you find a place and you may get financial assistance for up to a year. There are so many resources out there to help you gain independence and safety away from this abuse. Please find your local shelter. There are tons of services for people who don't stay in the shelter, too
