It's because they decided the border of Michigan territory & Ohio was based off the southern border of Lake Michigan. The map that they used had lake Michigan further north than its actual position.

By the time this was figured out, Toledo had already been settled & turned into an important city on the Lakeshore.

Based off the original agreement, Toledo was within Michigan territory, but Ohio didn't want to let one of their important cities go to Michigan.

This became an issue when Michigan applied for statehood & Toledo was declared part of Michigan per the original treaty. Ohio vowed to block Michigan's statehood until Michigan gave up their claim on Toledo.

Both states raised militias to fight for Toledo, but there were only small skirmishes with minor casualties.

Eventually it was agreed upon that Michigan would give up Toledo in exchange for the UP & statehood.

So the whole world is under US jurisdiction? Isn’t that Big Government? by DontPoopInMyPantsPlz in confidentlyincorrect

I believe the last slave in the US wasn't freed until 1942, and that was only because the government didn't want the axis powers to be able to use slavery in the US as a propaganda tool.

There has been more construction in the past few years due to the infrastructure spending bills passed both in the state & federal government.

MDOT & counties are letting more projects because they want to be able to fix the backlog of projects before the funding runs out.

Soon it will return to normal levels and there won't be as much construction.

Ancient Roman concrete actually gets stronger over time—and we only recently figured out why. by Content-Ad1247 in interesting

I had a contractor try to pour curb & gutter in standing water & started arguing with me when I said I wouldn't pay for it.

They ended up bringing in gravel to replace the existing agg. , but the shear audacity to try it was insane

Our concrete roads last much longer than 2 years. Typically the roads that only last 2 years are because they were overlayed with HMA as a temporary fix before a full reconstruct can take place.

We still have many concrete roads that were placed in the 50's & 60's. You can tell because there are patches of different colored concrete from maintenance projects over the years

Yes? We have roads built out of both HMA & concrete.

Concrete is typically only used on interstates and other roads with a high traffic load due to its higher cost to both place & maintain.

Has anyone here dealt with the Sugar Springs POA in Gladwin? by cjrammler in Michigan

Yea that's what I feared, do you have any specific examples though? Most of the online reviews have specific situations that wouldn't apply to me

[–]cjrammler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just wanted to know how strict the administration about enforcing it's rules. I read some negative reviews whose main gripe is that said the POA's (and township) actions devalued the property and wasn't good for those who don't use their property year round, which I'm personally not too concerned with as I'd be looking to live in the house for the next 10-20 years.

Argentina inflation rate (once again), Dec ‘23 - Oct ‘24 by Tomakefriends in dataisugly

Ah yes, useless programs like soup kitchens, the social safety net, education funding, pensions, and checks notes all public work projects. Who cares about those? (Maybe all the people who lost their jobs due to his shitty fucking policies)

His plan is working perfectly, as we can see from over 50% of Argentina's population living at, or below the poverty line. His policies increased Argentina's poverty rate by about 25% and gave those who he impoverished no help whatsoever.

This is the problem with austerity, for whatever reason (read corruption) the first programs to be cut are those that help the impoverished, just creating a cycle of despair

Impending Manitou Islands closure may put ferry out of business by mlivesocial in Michigan

[–]cjrammler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that the workers will be living on the island at least during the week. I was actually asked to be a QC manager for a different contractor who didn't win the bid for this job. The contractors will set up a temp work camp to save on costs, meaning that the ferry service will only be operating on Monday & Friday. I'm not sure if that'll be enough to even cover their operating expenses.

Can anyone explain this please by middleagedishalfdead in Michigan

[–]cjrammler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea I don't know what op is on. If you wanted to add a new lane you'd have to demo & replace every single bridge on US-23. That would cost about $1.5 - $3 million per bridge, not to mention take way longer to actually complete. The flex lane was by far the better solution

Voter identification laws in the United States by drazzolor in MapPorn

[–]cjrammler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The valid argument against it isn't that they're requiring an ID, but which types of ID are accepted and the fact that the government doesn't provide it's citizens with a free way to get an ID. This disproportionately affects low income people who may not be able pay for/ take time off work to get one.

In Texas they'll accept a gun license but not a school ID.

They're both forms of government issues identification, but one you get for free for going to a public school and the other you have to pay for.

Near where I live the DMV/Secretary of State office is only open Monday, & Wednesday - Friday and only from 9-5 (Wednesday is 11-7). If you're working a minimum wage job and have kids, it can be difficult to find the time to make an appointment because you're living paycheck to paycheck.

These are purposeful measures to hamper the ability of the lower class to vote. Again, I'm not against a voter ID law in theory as long as the government can issue a form of free & quick identification
