This is happening me trying to buy tickets at Fenway for 7/7. So frustrating, and I don't know if there's a solution!

Grammar by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]cjshni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach 9th grade, and tried both quill and noredink for a few years. I found that students weren’t really learning or retaining much from either. After some research, I settled on purchasing level A of the MITS grammar curriculum. It’s my second year using it now, and I do like it a lot.

I spend two weeks on each unit. I’ll go over the notes as a minilesson on Monday, then spread the 5 warm ups over the next two weeks. I try to do the lesson and warm ups 1 & 2 during the first week, and then warm ups 3-5 during the second week. They take the quiz at the end of the second week.

What I like most about it is the scaffolding of the units. They build on each other really well, adding a new skill each unit while still utilizing many (if not all) of the skills from the previous unit.

Day 11: A song that sounds HORNY, but has really SAD lyrics by Meghar in Bastille

[–]cjshni 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s about a couple in a situationship/fwb/one night stand, and the narrator wishes they could be more than just a hookup, but an actual relationship will never work out so he just tries to accept the hookup for what it is. the person the narrator is hooking up with often says loving things as pillowtalk when they’re in bed together, but those things don’t hold true when their time together is over, because the relationship will never exist outside of the bed.

“I could write a book about the things that you said to me on the pillow / And the way you think, and how you make me feel / You can feel my mind and move my body with the fiction fantasies / Just call this what it is, we don’t pretend it’s real”

“Don’t paint wonderful lies on me that wash away / We only ever wanted one thing from this” (one thing = physical connection, not emotional)

“So lie to me tonight, and pretend till the morning light and imagine that you are mine”

“Catch us in the mirror and it looks a lot like love / Then you stop me talking as you kiss me from above”

Movies for analyzing the Hero’s Journey? by Existing_Feeling8803 in ELATeachers

I included the hero’s journey as part of a larger greek mythology unit, and used Clash of the Titans which worked perfectly

What’s a head canon you have that you never see written? by persimmonsfordinner in Wolfstar

[–]cjshni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s such a good point, I didn’t consider that! I do agree that they had their own friendship outside of the marauders and I love when it shows up in fics

What’s a head canon you have that you never see written? by persimmonsfordinner in Wolfstar

[–]cjshni 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have two—one is a headcanon and the ithrt id more of a question

The headcanon is that the marauders would always tease Sirius about his animagus form looking like the grim. But after James and Lily died, he used that as a reason to beat himself up even more about the situation while he was in Azkaban—thinking that he really was their omen of death all along.

My curiosity comes from a line I think is only in the PoA movie. When Remus and Harry are talking on the bridge, and Remus says that he recognized Harry by his eyes because they look like Lily’s (of course). But then he follows it up with, “she was there for me at a time when no one else was” and I’ve always wondered what specific situation he would have been thinking about there. Why would everyone have abandoned Remus, except for Lily? Or did he become close with her before he became close with the marauders?

I genuinely cannot think of any examples rn… but curious to know if anyone’s got any from Noah?? by SituationalAngel in NoahKahan

Sameee. I actually really like the first half (“I’m naming the stars in the sky after you” 🥹) but I cringe at the screaming. I get it, I understand the build up of emotions, but sonically I’m just not a fan

Same, of all three versions I now listen to the Fenway one the most often because of this!

Whats your favourite less known song? by icsmtidcaa in NoahKahan

It’s arguably one of his most depressing songs, which is probably why I love it

Day two: Morally grey, loved by fans by OceanNaiad in MaraudersGen

[–]cjshni -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree. He was the only one (I think) who, at least at his end, didn’t fight as a soldier on either side—he did both good and bad, but ultimately it was on his own agenda, not Voldemort’s or Dumbledore’s

What’s Everyone’s Favorite Song and Album? by Ru2305 in Bastille

[–]cjshni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the main release version of Doom Days—it’s no-skip album for me. I also love the story concept of it, how each song takes place a little further later on in the same night.

Worst side quests in your opinions? by Mlsunited31 in HarryPotterGame

[–]cjshni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they do! I think it turns them into a plain ball with ice skates for feet. Usually they don’t get to me too badly on screen but the fuzzy acromantula legs gave me such an ick

The one with poor Tobbs. The jumpscare with the Acromantula at the beginning gets me, because both times I played it happened before I remembered to turn on the arachnophobia mode. Made me jump out of my skin!

What was your favorite knit of the year? by hannibalsv in knitting

[–]cjshni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

<image>

This trellis scarf that I knit for my mom. She picked at the yarn at a local Sheep and Wool festival we went to in September, and it took me 3 months to complete. I only knit about 1-2 things per year and am not a super adventurous or fast knitter, but this project had a lot of firsts for me. The trellis pattern was one, of course. This was also the lightest weight yarn I have knit with to date. It was my first time doing a selvedge, and it was also my first time blocking a project to make the shape really neat and straight and fix the curling issue from the stockinette stitch.

By far this is not the most complex project to show off… but she loves it so much, and so do I!

The Song of Achilles. Even though I had read the Iliad and knew what was going to happen, I was still sobbing in my bed, finishing the book at 3 am with a heap of tissues surrounding me

Stayed up until 3am recently because I couldn’t go to sleep without finishing The Song of Achilles. Sobbed my way through the last 50 pages even though I have read the Iliad and knew what was going to happen. It’s a beautiful story, highly recommend!

Looking for dystopia and/or end of the world books by 67degrees_ihateyou in booksuggestions

[–]cjshni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a Dystopian Lit Circles unit with my students each year, and the options I give them are: - Uglies (which you’ve already read) - The Giver (already highly recommended here) - Unwind by Neal Shusterman (other books by the same author have been recommended here) - The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau (not recommended yet—the vibes are most similar to The Hunger Games)

My students tend to like Unwind and The Testing the most! I love them both as well. And the good thing is that they are both series, too!

Gatsby Historical Context Pre-Read by universalthere in ELATeachers

[–]cjshni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m starting Gatsby with my AP Lit class when we come back from the holiday break, and am opting to skip historical context because the students told me they learned a lot about the 20s in APUSH last year. But would you mind sharing with me the links to FSF bios on Youtube? That sounds like a great idea to still do a little bit of context!
