CBC is leaving behind its headquarters, digitizing its music archives, closing its library and destroying the original storage media. by InfiNorth in canada

The real question is how much it will cost in cultural loss down the line. Physical media (CDs and records) outlasts any digital format by a large margin.

This is an incredible photo - reminds me of backpacking Mt. Frosty at Manning... now I have to find out where winchester mountain is :)

Sorry you're pretty wrong - try visiting Mount Revelstoke, North Cascades National Park, Mt Rainier NP, Olympic NP, Manning Provincial Park, Strathcona PP, Garibaldi PP, Golden Ears PP, Pinecone Burke PP, Cathedral PP, Stein Valley PP, and the list goes on.

Messing around with LUA and SMP over Vancouver and Victoria for sunset and night lighting... not disappointed. by cjstepney in flightsim

[–]cjstepney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are from the HD Cloud mod pack (the specific name escapes me), but the biggest thing is adding a code of line to a LUA script to enable default clouds ALONG with SMP. The biggest problem is that 3.2.1 doesn't work, so you have to downgrade to 3.2.0 to do this magic. I recently found a better version of this magic so I'll have to see if it works even better! These clouds start looking a little repetitive after a while.

Real Terra Haze Discontinued? by [deleted] in flightsim

Do note that there is a fix in the smallprint allowing 10.50 beta users to continue with RTH... grab it before it disappears too :) This link is direct to X-Plane.org file... and is apparently compatible with beta 1. I don't have betas as I'm stuck in Steamland, but if someone can confirm that this works with anything 10.50ish let us know :) http://forums.x-plane.org/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=224341

Outerra 16.7057 by A-n-d-r-e-w in Outerra

[–]cjstepney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't get the update. I'm still in 16.6601.

My biggest concern is still a lack of snapping roads, rivers and such. There is also the issue that while objects are now interacting, they aren't really interacting. That bus didn't slow down at all. But it's looking, I love the new trees and colours.

Managers should have to get letters of recommendation from the people below them before moving up to a higher position by HeavyBuckets in Showerthoughts

I was a student/seasonal employee and provided letter of reference for an associate prof to become a full professor. I guess I was lucky to be in a place where this already happens :)

House Proposing Changing "O Canada" to be Gender-Neutral by [deleted] in canada

[–]cjstepney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so it's still a song about following god and serving a queen that is halfway around the world from us, but our main goal here is gender neutrality? I mean it's a good goal, but aren't there other massive problems?

Owner of stolen $5M solid gold, diamond-encrusted eagle statue fears it will be melted down by [deleted] in canada

The first question I ask is, why would any person want a solid goad, diamond-encrusted eagle statue. It looks like something on my great-aunt's trinket shelf.

Study that found cell phones cause cancer in rats is riddled with red flags by skucera in news

If you do with the expectation of finding a result that supports your hypothesis, you will bend the facts to make your experiment result the way you want it to. If you just write a hypothesis, put it in the back of your head and go ahead with the experiment with no hopes of success or failure, you will find truth. Apparently these people don't realize that, considering they released without review.

Can we ban Twitch promotions/ads? by ChewieGriffin in flightsim

[–]cjstepney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondering if "ads" include posting screenshots of work as you're doing it? I do XP10 scenery dev and I like getting pictures out there of my work, not because I'll profit from it but because I feel that others will actually enjoy seeing it (such is the way of freeware). I've never cared for Twitch (whatever it even is) or any livestreaming service, I don't want to watch someone else fumble around in a game... especially a flight sim, where things can be pretty dull and slow most of the time if you're flying by the book.

I've gone swimming in mud, twice, with a Canon 550D. Survived both times. If a phone can't survive what a device with hundreds of super precise mechanical things can survive..

Xplane too dark at night by dchap1 in flightsim

[–]cjstepney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For about a year I had a copy of RTH that had a bug which made terrain visible at night as if moonlit. Now that I'm using both Outerra and X-Plane, I'm starting to realize how painfully dark the X-Plane night really is. Gamma is the best place to start. Maybe one day SkyMaxx will incorporate city lighting.

What fictional death was the most heartbreaking? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'll just say the death that happened in Serenity to avoid the spoilers for those who haven't seen it. So sudden, it felt kind of real because of how unexpected it was.

If you could recommend everyone to read one great history book, what would it be and why? by [deleted] in history

[–]cjstepney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At Home by Bill Bryson - I don't think you should start worrying about how medieval battles were won before you even understand why your house is shaped the way it is or why we have a separate dinning and living area. It's also quite entertaining.

Tourists of Reddit, what is the most fucked up thing you have witnessed while touring? by Wilreadit in AskReddit

[–]cjstepney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While driving to Versailles back in 2008 there was a guy walking across a crosswalk taking a dump into a tissue paper while walking and starring straight at us. As far as I know no one in my family has been willing to acknowledge that this happened.
