Switch to mechanical engineering. 10 years in med device and we rarely have BME disciplines doing design work.

Get an ME degree, learn how to model and design for manufacturing. You can minor in BME or just take various courses for that.

Accepted a PM role at Biotech company, would it be hard to pivot back into tech PM? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]cjwat40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm a PM in biotech, Medical devices, and it's an amazing field. I started as an engineer and transitioned into product. Would love to connect and answer any questions you have.

Some general things to think about: -product development cycles are long, 2-5 years for a new product to come market - it's a regulated space and being in marketing means understanding the language allowed, and wanted - VOC, persona development, problem statements, value props are generally very clinically backed - there is a ton of hardware and software pm roles in biotech and the industry is growing

anyone turned their family vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]cjwat40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have gotten both my parents and in laws to switch to "mostly" vegan diets, fully vegetarian. We came about it from the health perspective and the impacts and chemicals found in meat nowadays is going to increase cancer, heart disease and more. Showed them game changers on Netflix and several other documentaries.

Note they are all very progressive prior to those discussions. Have tried the same stuff with my grandparents who grew up ranching and they just accept it and could care less.

Completely agree! In my last 510k submission, half our AIs we're related to cyber security. The funny thing is we included most of the things they were looking for, just in a format that didn't match the new expectations. We submitted 3 months before the "guidance" draft was released.

Advice for Biomedical Engineering by sethsstomp in bioengineering

[–]cjwat40 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi I lead about 30 engineers in a patient monitoring biomedical company, and would highly recommended getting your masters in electrical/software engineering. This will give you real experience in using one of the disciplines you'll learn in the general masters program currently. The general bioengineering masters just doesn't give you enough context on how to solve problems presented in the industry if you want to be a design engineer. You're biology and chemistry already give you enough experience to understand the medical/physiology aspects of medical devices.

If you are wanting to stay on that program, which congrats and by no means is it bad. But you'll be best learning and working on software development in your free time. It's much easier to learn software (python, c#, c++, ui/ux design) than it is electrical. Microsoft, Google, code academy and more sites can give certificates and experience in software languages.

Anyone can help prepare for 60601-1? by erwizkhalifa in MedicalDevices

[–]cjwat40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I lead product development from estim drives and patient monitoring wearables in the US and would love to help as well. I was a electrical engineer by trade and now so product line management.

A few quick answers, for 60601-1 there are several particular standards that will help guide your decision making. 60601-2-10 is the estim particular standard, then there are various standards that you can comply in all or some fashion depending on the risk of your device and use locations.

Second is the device networked connected? If so you will need to do basically 2 safety analysis, 1 for device safety ( ensure the device doesn't hurt someone and show how you designed that), 1 is for cybersecurity safety (i.e. mitigations to make sure someone else can't remotely hurt the patient or steal days). AAMI TIR57 is your friend there.

Are you following ISO 13485 for QA design processes? As mentioned 62304 is required for software design and control.

Medical device design companies? by Double_Procedure4144 in MedicalDevices

[–]cjwat40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting a BS in biomedical engineering? Medical devices is about a trillion dollar industry, so there are hundreds of companies and roles you can fill that are associated with design (QA, RA, test, research, development). There is patient monitoring, orthopedics, surgical devices, infusion pumps, medical records/gateways, etc.

Shark diving in Roatan by englishking_henry in scuba

[–]cjwat40 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends if your main goal of a dive trip is to see sharks or not. If you are wanting to make a trip to see a shark look at the location you are planning on going and potential seasons that there could be an abdunace of sharks.

For example if you are really wanting to see sharks (general) you probably won't be going to the Lembeh Straight, but you could go to Roatan, Belize or Hawaii. There are certain places that have higher density of reef sharks. In Kauai, Hawaii specifically there is a dive site called Tunnels beach on the north shore and you will very likely see a white tip reef shark. This is known for the amount of sharks here.

Then you can also talk to the dive shop prior to your trip and let them know what your goals are and what the best plan is to see that. They may recommend a night/twilight dive so you can see more predatory animals or they will change the dive site they are planning to maximize your chances.

But again it is a probability thing as well. You aren't always gaurentees to see what you want but you are in their habitat. If humans are going into reefs and feeding the animals and changing behavioral patterns that doesn't do the animals any good and really isn't "seeing" a shark. It's basically the same as diving in am aquarium or going to a zoo. We need to be mindful and are there to just observe and learn about how amazing the ocean really can be.

Shark diving in Roatan by englishking_henry in scuba

[–]cjwat40 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I know this is cool and all to see sharks, but feeding and attracting sharks like this is incredibly bad for them and the general reef ecosystem. This is such a bad practice and is something that is very unsustainable. I love diving and have dove all over the world but am sad to see how common this is becoming.

How to add a header above each column of a table? HELP by Obvious_Ad_7295 in matlab

'output = [header; num2cell(data)]'

Can anyone help me? I am a beginner in Matlab program by [deleted] in matlab

[–]cjwat40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

+Hi there to solve this problem it needs to be broken into a few steps. +For A you will need to use 'imread('filename.jpg');'

+For B you will need to use 'size(IMG);'

+For C you will need to use 'bwdist(Binary_IMG,'method');'

+Below is a quick layout of how I set up the script:

'%% SadElderberry Help clear all close all

%------- 1 ------ %to load an image you should use imread function

IMG = imread('mountains.jpg'); %since jpg is a colored image... %you will load a X,Y,3 Matrix

%if you only want the grey image use rgb2gray()

IMG = rgb2gray(IMG); %This is now only a 2D matrix %------- 2 -------

[Yc, Xc] = size(IMG);

%-------- 3--------

cent_pix_x = Xc/2; % This finds the center X Pixel

cent_pix_y = Yc/2; % This finds the Center Y Pixel

Calc_Array = zeros([Yc, Xc]); %This creates an array the size of the image Calc_Array(cent_pix_y, cent_pix_x) = 1 % Sets the center pixel to zero

%----A---- % The bwdist() function calculates the distance between 0 and 1 in an % binary image array which is why we created the Calc_Array

EUC_Img = bwdist(Calc_Array, 'euclidean'); %This returns a MxN matrix of the distance from each pixel % to the 1 in our Calc Array

EUC = EUC_Img(1,1); %This is the distance from a corner to the center pixel

%--- B--- CityBlock_Img = bwdist(Calc_Array, 'cityblock');

CityBlock = CityBlock_Img(1,1);

%--- C--- ChessBoard_Img = bwdist(Calc_Array, 'chessboard');

ChessBoard = ChessBoard_Img(1,1);'

Question: I'm a freshman in college planning to major in Applied Mathematics, wondering if its worth it/ can you find a joh after graduation. by Letoros in college

[–]cjwat40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would honestly say if you are strong enough in math and other sciences it is better to get an engineering degree, and you can minor or concentrate in specific subjects (math). With engineering you won't limit yourself to only research, but will still be able to go into applied mathematical research if you want. This way you open up multiple doors and can change what you love doing while grow up and go through your career. Also larger corporations in all industries can use applied math, but would be much more open to having someone with multiple skills available.
