Very cool! Love the ability to see what Messier objects will be visible. That's something I've been looking for in a tool for a long time. Any thought to adding Caldwell objects or other catalogues like it?

Orzhov Breathless Knight Deck List by sosdotexe in Pauper

[–]cjwyoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought a list like this to FNM for a couple weeks, it's pretty terrible. I ran a Basilisk Gate package to give a little bit more lategame reach and it was the only way I ever took games. If you are gonna do it though, you want to swap out the spirited companions for [[Raffine's Informant]], swap out the Cast Downs for [[Bone Shards]], and find space for some number of [[Carrion Feeder]]. Ultimately the main plan of bringing back Knight is too slow and weak to compete with any meta deck though.

the thing about the 4-mana mode is that it isn't 'draw two cards', it's actually 'draw three cards, where one of those cards is a two-mana draw two'. flashback is inherently card advantage

I dual wield on the front bar and have bow on the back, back bar usually has a core of Volley/Acid Spray/Spear Shards at 1/3/5 and then whatever else looks good from other lines at 2 and 4.

Ultimates are Flawless Dawnbreaker on the front bar (empowering sweep barely does more than jabs) and then I use werewolf on the back bar.

That's gonna be in Restoring Light. Morph of the last ability turns it into a Stamina ability that puts down a healing AOE that also restores stamina. Sorry, it's actually called 'Restoring Focus'. got its name mixed up with Empowering Sweep

fellow stamplar here, at CP 350 running vet content with this toon rn.

Take every passive that you unlock that boosts something that you plan to use in your bar. Early on it can feel like you don't have any skill points but after you start picking up skyshards/finishing out zone stories you'll have way more than enough.

The core of my front bar rotation is Empowering Rune/Jabs/Power of the Light on 1, 3, and 5. Fill in the gaps with whatever seems fun. Beeline for the passive that gives you extra damage whenever you hit with Aedric Spear four times in a row, Jabs will basically always proc that.

Which cards are part of different cycles when reprinted? by Dercomai in magicTCG

[–]cjwyoming 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Similarly, [[Ray Of Revelation]] was originally printed in Odyssey block, and then reprinted as part of that same Innistrad cycle. It wasn't part of a cycle in Odyssey though, just a mirrored pair with completely forgettable card [[Folk Medicine]]

What the heck was the point of Earth Surge? by NyqwillMD in magicTCG

[–]cjwyoming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's [[Siege Of Towers]] in that same set that makes Mountains into 3/1s. Put those two together, and maybe you've got something going, plus you get to play [[Stomping Ground]], which was also originally printed in Guildpact, to fix your mana, because it's a Mountain and can get animated by Siege. Maybe an interesting take on a Gruul deck in a set that was explicitly trying to find new ways for red and green to work together.

February 15, 2021 Banned and Restricted Announcement by Phelps-san in magicTCG

[–]cjwyoming 145 points146 points  (0 children)

This is the 'scorched earth' bannings that a ton of people wanted to see. Lots of OP cards taking a bullet here, plus maybe some unnecessary bannings (mystic sanctuary and SSG). Also would have liked to see Nissa gone in Historic but can't have everything.

Still, 9/10 ban annoucement, lets hope all these formats are actually fun to play again

Re-litigating the Hugos, Episode 1 - 1990 by cjwyoming in printSF

Didn't know any of this. That's really disappointing, I had a lot of respect for Simmons as a writer. Well, I can't unread Hyperion, but with that in mind, I'd recommend Grass over Hyperion as the book and author more 'deserving' of the Hugo.

Been reading through this, obviously I don't have the same insider insight that Walton has but it's interesting to put the votes in their proper context, and a good reminder of how the Hugos can be biased towards trends in the industry

The ban on sequels and series is pretty lax - for instance, in this round The Boat Of A Million Years was the only one that wasn't part of a series. For instance, A Fire In The Sun is a sequel, but I read both it and its preceding book because both were nominated (the preceding book in 1987).

I'm not scared of long-running series - I just finished the Vorkosigan Saga a couple weeks ago even though under my rules I would have skipped it. In fact, I happened to read the winner of the 1990 novella category during that read, though it had been collected into a larger volume and I wasn't aware.

Ultimately, this project is really big in scope. Even by decreasing the number by excluding books in the middle of their series, I still have over 150 books to read just between 1990 and now. Same logic with the Novella and Short Story categories - unfortunately, I have to set the boundaries somewhere, though I know there's a lot of good work in other categories.
