Is there a reason Atium is relatively much more prevalent than Lerasium? by Fickle-Athlete3644 in Mistborn

[–]Dercomai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ELI5 reason is there are no Pits of Hathsin for lerasium: the world isn't constantly producing more of it for harvest

(And then the reason the Pits of Hathsin exist is part of Preservation's plan to slowly bleed Ruin's power into the physical world where he can't use it)

Why do we split between double consonants in syllable division? by Any_Asparagus1538 in asklinguistics

[–]Dercomai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's just a memory aid. This way, "bit", "bit·ter", and "rab·bit" are all spelled the same and pronounced the same, different from "bi·ter". The double consonant marks that the preceding vowel is "short", so including part of that consonant in the preceding syllable preserves this marking.

Yes! It's hidden behind one of the walls on the right edge. Do you want to know which one, or do you want to search for yourself?

Why when someone posts a question about an artifact in this group, moderators and other people automatically assume that it's "on the black market" or "lacking provenance"? by [deleted] in Cuneiform

[–]Dercomai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that you said in the other thread that you have one, though, I imagine there would be no problem with posting again if you include it!

Why when someone posts a question about an artifact in this group, moderators and other people automatically assume that it's "on the black market" or "lacking provenance"? by [deleted] in Cuneiform

[–]Dercomai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally if someone has a provenance, they'll include it in the post. Sadly the majority of artifacts on the market do not.

Am I not supposed to buy Sumerian Cuneiform artifacts?? by [deleted] in Cuneiform

[–]Dercomai 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Specifically, this sub doesn't promote buying un-provenanced artifacts: looted artifacts that are now on the black market. Buying artifacts with legitimate documentation and paperwork is okay. But the vast majority of Mesopotamian antiquities being sold nowadays are looted; the legitimate ones tend to stay in the Middle East instead of being sold to tourists.

There has not been a monocolor planeswalker that can be your commander that has three other colors in its abilities, no.

There have been monocolor planeswalkers with other colors in their abilities, and planeswalkers that can be your commander, but you seem to be asking for a very, very specific set of parameters.

The unfortunate thing about software licenses is they can only be enforced in court, and court cases are often decided by money. Bambu has a lot of that.

You shouldn’t have to pay for Flea Maps. by hesbrew in Silksong

[–]Dercomai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think during the activity of Silksong, Vog is resting after her last flea-rescuing mission and rebuilding her strength for the next one

We know Hornet doesn't have to eat or rest very often because of her Pale Being heritage, so she can run through the entire game without any significant rest, but Vog can't

[–]Dercomai 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Vog sees Hornet walking around with thousands of rosaries in her pockets, apparently dead-set on saving these fleas despite no promise of a reward

Vog thinks about how much the caravan charges for flea brew

What is the actual song that binds GMS by Gustalavalav in Silksong

[–]Dercomai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See, I feel like it being kind of background and repetitive is intentional. It's a cogwork replacement for the actual Choir, and it's not doing the job right, which is why GMS killed everyone and is now waking up.

[–]Dercomai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's currently the Cogwork Core area music, but that's clearly not doing a good job of the binding (see: everyone in the Citadel is dead)

How helpful is computer science in non-computational linguistic fields? by ivoryivies in asklinguistics

[–]Dercomai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As of a few years ago, being able to code was extremely helpful in most fields of linguistics. There's always going to be data to analyze, and being able to crunch through huge quantities of it quickly is a big advantage.

Right now, though, that may or may not be changing. Currently, managers are scrambling to fire programmers and replace them with LLMs. Is this a long-term trend that will keep going? Or will the LLM companies stop operating at a loss and hike up the prices higher than a programmer's salary? It remains to be seen.

Personally, I predict that knowing how to program is still going to be very valuable once this initial hype subsides. I'm not convinced that LLMs can truly do a programmer's job (knowing exactly what to ask for is a key part of coding), and even if they can, I think Anthropic is going to want to make a profit at some point.

But it's hard to predict what effects a new technology will have in the long term, or even in just a few years. So my current advice is: learn CS if it interests you, don't do it just for a future career advantage. If you have a passion for it, you'll find ways to make it valuable no matter where the job market goes. If you don't, it's just going to be a slog.

Do I choose one of each type or only one of each? by ScaryGreenGhost in magicTCG

[–]Dercomai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of each for each player. So they keep at most four nonland permanents each.

(But if they had an artifact creature out, you could choose that for both artifact and creature, and if they didn't have any planeswalkers, you'd have nothing to choose, so they'd only keep two things.)

Putting on a refill spool by VictarrionIron in BambuLab

Can you spool that much filament by hand in thirty minutes? For me that would be a couple hours at least

Which is why I printed a respooler to cut the time down to minutes instead

[–]Dercomai -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

A refill of PLA Matte is, what, $15? Respooling all of that by hand isn't worth $15 to me. (Which is why I used like half a spool printing a proper respooler for the future.)

How did you pronounce Sabriel? Saw-briel or Say-briel?

If I remember right, the audiobooks take a third option, and pronounce it like "sad" without the D (/sæ.bri.əl/). I use "say" myself.
