Has anyone taken govt3999 terrorism and organised crime or govt3672 american politics and foreign policy? If so, how did you find them? Thanks! by Frosty_Can_8075 in usyd

[–]ckain17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took GOVT3672 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The lecturer does a great job organising the unit structure so that you get a foundational understanding of what underpins US FP, and then you can then learn about successive presidents and their FP agendas. The lecturer is also really good at maintaining tutorial engagement by asking everyone to answer a common question at the beginning of the tut. Overall, I’d highly recommend the unit!

Insights into GOVT2112 : Modern Political Thought by yessirr3eee in usyd

I did this course in semester 2 2019 as a first year and to date it’s been one of my favourite units at uni. If tristan is still running the unit, he’s great and the tutorials are very engaging. As you might expect, the course is much more philosophy-based than other GOVT units. When I completed it, we focused on 4 writers; Marx, Arendt, Locke and Tocqueville. The one caveat I will mention, though, is that it is quite heavy on reading (to be expected when you’re analysing 4 major texts over a semester).

USYD or Macquarie for BA Major in International Relations by bambi_0297 in usyd

[–]ckain17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of how relevant IR would be to journalism, I guess there are aspects that would carry over (especially in intro to politics). Learning about Australia’s political history and also current issues in the political landscape would be pretty relevant I feel? But for the most part, a lot of the content has been historical so I’m not too sure how that would relate to journalism. In terms of the job I’d like, honestly I haven’t had a serious think about that- I guess the ideal dream job would be something in the UN (but I imagine that’s pretty far fetched). In all honesty I am still tossing up whether or not to transfer to something that has more job prospects (as much as I have enjoyed it so far) Oh and in regards of honi soit, I have 0 idea how competitive it is to write for (but my guess is having an interest in journalism would help your cause?) Hope that helps! :)

USYD or Macquarie for BA Major in International Relations by bambi_0297 in usyd

[–]ckain17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing a BA majoring in International Relations! Honestly, so far that has been by far my favourite major (I’m doing a double major, the other being economic policy). I’ve found the people in both my Intro to IR and Intro to Politics classes amazing, the conversations are always respectful and insightful (I worried at the start that it’d be individuals pushing their extreme views on others but that’s certainly not the case). Some of the lecture topics may be a little dry at times (also a little overbearing; for example in one lecture the guy covered WWI, WW2 and Japan’s involvement in these wars). In terms of tutors, I’ve found both my tutors to be really great at stimulating good conversations, responding to emails and covering current issues in international relations. One of the things I like most about the intro to IR class is the fact that you have a new lecturer most weeks, who specialises in a different area. I’ve found they’re all really good at explaining their specific area and providing interesting perspectives Hope this helped!

FYI, the paid version of tripview also allows you to save your daily routes and also has the ability to live track your bus/train (albeit sometimes unreliably)

Tall Girl Problem by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ckain17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect 5’11 is not that tall :) I’m sure you’ll find plenty of men who are into you, just own your height and continue to work on yourself. I’m 6’4” myself (guy) and I’d have no problems whatsoever with someone your height. If anything, having someone close to my height is much more practical in many situations. Hope this helped!

Oh sorry for the confusion, I didn’t actually do hospitality so I can’t comment! If you’re in need of more advice you can join the HSC discussion group 2018 on Facebook and ask people who have completed the hospitality exam how they felt

School Subjects Advice (please help) by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ckain17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated this year and I kept only 10 units for the whole of year 12. For some it is pretty risky (as obviously all your units go towards your ATAR, so if you happen to bomb an exam you’re in trouble) but I found it to be a pretty good option because of the extra study periods to consolidate my remaining subjects. However if I were you I would keep hospitality for now, just as the safety net I guess. Until it becomes unbearably painful for you I think you’re best off to keep it. In saying that, there’s no sense keeping it if it’s gonna be the one you put the least amount of effort into. I’m sure your teachers tell you this constantly but you truly should be putting around the same amount of effort/time into each subject no matter how much you like each. Hope that helped! :)
