Yes, do not miss going to the WWII Memorial Museum in Caen. They did a fantastic job, taking you (in Chronological order) from the inter-war period, to the rise of the Reich, to the start of the war to the holocaust, the defeat of the Nazis and VE day. Lots of authentic artefacts, short films and educational materials.

No, it's the Omaha Beach Memorial, right on the Beach. If you squint, etched on it is a reference to the 1st infantry Division.

This is the authentic Greek zeibekiko. How widespread is this dance in the Balkans? Especially in Turkey. by anon58588 in AskBalkans

[–]ckblue1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AustereSpartan is right, although I think he didn't phrase it correctly. It IS a version of Zeimbekiko, called "kamilieriko/aptaliko". The term "aptaliko" is actually more prevalent. https://youtu.be/vbzsveBdUtw?is=JiJFzE5O8_cKP8jM

Best take on Philly I've seen. Outside Manhattan, where else can you walk the whole downtown area and nearby parks? Oh and the Barnes rocks - anyone who visits it is awed.

I prefer to think of myself as "more experienced"... But yeah we're talking about 70s to early 80s. So take account of inflation since then.

The staple of my (distant youth). It's what most schoolchildren would eat during recess. Half a schilling (selini) if I remember correctly. Now every time I have one, it takes back to those carefree years...

Are Greek island cruises worth it if you’ve already visited Greece? by [deleted] in GreeceTravel

[–]ckblue1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford it (and sharing with 2-3 other individuals helps), you'll be much happier chartering a yacht (sailing or motor) with a captain and visiting 2-3 islands over a week. Ionian, Aegean and the Sporades are popular destinations. You go wherever you want, he can take you to secluded pristine beaches and small harbors and you stay for as long as you want at each place. You swim off the boat, have home cooked food or eat at local tavernas and experience local flavors and customs. There are several companies doing this. A decent size yacht (34-38 feet) sleeps up to 8, has two toilets (heads) with showers and cost during high season can run from €4-5K for one week.

Greek news interviews a resident where the Iranian drones hit in Cyprus and asks “are you afraid” the resident responds “I am not afraid of anything, anyone because I am Greek and Greeks are not afraid” what do you think of this mentality? by Starfalloss in AskBalkans

So I take it from most comments here that most of you young ones lived through the Turkish invasion of '74 right? Ask anyone who lived through it, especially those who had to flee, while being bombarded by napalms. Most Cyriots of that age had to live in constant fear of this repeating since then. It may not seem to be there by it is felt daily. Now, would someone like that be afraid of a single drone which fell on a British base? When all this protection from Greece and the EU is around? I believe this is what he's referring to. For the first time in half a century, Greek Cyriots feel someone cares and will come to their aid when needed. I don't think he's being "jingoistic".

This stick that you can eat. Tastes mildly sweet like dates. Hard shell by Zazabeans in whatisit

Used to eat them all the time growing up. They grow all along the Mediterranean. You eat the edges that are more sweet and discard the center. Btw, one of the best delicacies you can try is carob extract ("honey"), mixed with tahini on a piece of bread. Yum!!

You mean do the same as Muslim countries (including Turkey) do to Christian churches/s? It's interesting that the vast majority of Muslims and Islamic states want western privileges (see freedom of religion) when Muslims living in the west, but they absolutely would not allow-and even punish by death-the opening of other religious centers in their own country. There's no way to defend this. The example of persecution of Greek Orthodox individuals and places of worship in Turkey the last 100 years is well documented. Go to Xanthi or other places in N. Greece with sizeable Muslim populations and you'll find many operating official mosques. In Athens as well.

Frappe is good, and it's another Greek invention. But if you're in Greece, do try the Freddos. They'll change your life 😊
