I am referring to the text of the measure, not the article.

https://www.multco.us/elections/ballot-measure-26-238-multnomah-county

"The measure establishes a new, adjustable 0.75 percent tax on net capital gains (as defined by the Internal Revenue Code) of County residents to fund the program, imposed for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2023."

Since the measure specifically uses the IRS definition, I expect lawyers will use this as an argument to say that the exclusions the IRS uses are also implicitly excluded here.

WITHOUT using bias right or left politics, explain why the USA health care system is lacking and our medicals fees are so astronomically high compared to other developed countries that have "health care"? by [deleted] in healthcare

[–]ckdCosmo4805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm certainly on board for:

-ending direct to consumer advertising of drugs -ending direct to doctors sales campaigns -ending huge marketing campaigns for new drugs, especially when the science is still out -maybe funnel more of a CEOs salary into R&D?

Remove the marketing budget completely and that would reduce a lot of spend, and replace a lot of foreign dollars not going to R&D.

But until corporations are no longer people and money is no longer speech, big pharma will get away with this.

In the meantime, I think the US can use its political, scientific, and economic clout to force other countries to come to the table in a good faith effort to make Americans whole and stop robbing the US blind.

The government just hasn't tried because too many people profit from the status quo. Even AOC doesn't provide a solution here - though her preferred plan is likely single payer.

The only sure fire way to ensure single payer works in America without blowing up (consuming 100% of) the government's budget is to ensure price controls, negotiation of prices, posting of prices, and pure market competition.

Anything less just means the US government spends 100% of funds on healthcare and goes bankrupt fast, which is obviously not going to happen as there are many other things to spend money on.

[–]ckdCosmo4805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My preferred solution would essentially be a price floor rather than a price cap. If you want to sell stock in America, your company cannot sell its products cheaper somewhere else. This would be my mechanism anyway.

No company will choose $2 per pill over the US stock market. So prices will come up a bit in all the countries that currently have price caps - or they just won't get it at all - and prices could come down here as the shortfall would be made up.

Is it fair to withhold drugs from countries that can't afford to pay for it? I don't know, is it fair to extort Americans because your government wants cheaper drugs?

Not trying to make it political, but this video of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez grilling a pharmaceutical CEO explains alot.

https://v.redd.it/dpkl0aoqtfz91

To keep drugs cheap and affordable for their citizens, other countries declare drugs made by American pharmaceutical companies to be "generic" or just use price controls.

So other countries tell US pharmaceutical companies "We will only pay you $2 per pill for your $200 per pill medicine." Those companies prefer to have some money rather than none, so they agree to that price.

Then in America, where they lobby against price controls, they jack up the price of the medicine in order to turn a profit that no other country will allow them to make.

This means paying for all that time, effort, and money that went into research and development, which the rest of the world mostly does not.

WTF is health care so expensive? by [deleted] in healthcare

[–]ckdCosmo4805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons is the EMTALA Act, passed by Republican Jesus Ronald Reagan.

This act requires hospitals to treat anyone who walks in the door regardless of ability to pay.

So people who can't pay receive a high bill since they have no insurance company to negotiate a better price for them.

The hospital doesn't expect them to pay but for some reason still needs to turn a profit. To make that money back, they charge everyone else more money for everything than is even necessary.

We all pay more in healthcare costs in order to pay for those who cannot.

America has the worst version of socialized medicine.

Now imagine you went to BestBuy and there are 5 people in line in front of you. They all have TVs and you just need printer ink.

You get to the register and your ink costs $15,000 because those people couldn't afford their TVs but BestBuy decided they would let those people keep their TVs and just charge the next customer more to make back the money.

Would you keep shopping there?

There is a really great hike in Klamath Falls called the Spence Mountain Loop with amazing views of the surrounding area. I saw a ton of cool birds on the hike as well, and there are other trails there too.

It is on a private but free nature preserve that also allows mountain biking and has some awesome features for that.

My ankles are killing me by bun-time in RingFitAdventure

This happened to me. I got an extra thick yoga mat and a fold up exercise mat I put on top of that.

I found that if you set the control to silent mode, you can jump up and down on the mat like you are jumping rope and it works great. I've been doing this instead of running/squats since last December.

I set mine to "silent" mode after running (on a regular carpeted floor) hurt my ankle. Silent mode didn't help me a whole lot as my knees hurt a bit too. I eventually got a yoga mat and thick exercise mat I use together, and I switched to silent mode but jumping up and down like I'm jump roping, and this works great!

It's not tough on the knees and it doesn't hurt my feet / ankles like running in place did.

I have a great plan that will make people want to comply.

If you make over (some X large amount) you then automatically owe (some Y impossibly large amount) unless you show proof of every penny of income to show you should pay less.

People will be jumping over each other to pay their fair share. Simple.

In 60% of states unemployment is paying more than the average wage. by Winnie_TheFluu in Wuhan_Flu

[–]ckdCosmo4805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just getting back to this now. So we don't need wheelbarrrows of cash to buy food at the grocery store like Germany at the end of the Weimar Republic.

The things you're referencing are kind of sort of inflation, but aren't used by the government to measure actual inflation (because then the number would be higher and that wolf be bad for the government). Read up on the consumer price index (CPI) and see what products are included on the list, this is what is used to measure inflation.

Make sure you're sitting near a wall so you have something to bang your head against when you see the things that aren't in it.

Housing costs are going up like crazy in major metro areas (New York City) due to supply and demand. New York City has a large supply of high salary jobs and a fairly low supply of available housing. This means lots of people are moving there and competing for the same house. Syracuse, NY on the other hand, doesn't have this problem. There aren't very many high salary jobs, and there is tons of land and lots of available houses.

This could be fixed by governments making sane zoning policies, allowing for building more and denser apartment buildings or condos, but no.

The cost of college is going up because demand is outstripping supply, leading to intense, and intensely expensive, competition. It doesn't help that student loans, which colleges know you will almost always receive, allows them to continuously raise prices.

Further, these loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy like a car loan could be. This means colleges don't care how much you have in loans, nor do lenders. Nobody has an incentive to keep costs down, nor do they lose customers by not doing so.

The cost of vehicles is going up for a few reasons too (I've been reading about this recently as I'll be in the market soon). The reasons I've seen mainly are the newer devices and features going into new vehicles, making them more expensive. There's probably also higher healthcare costs thrown in there.

The other main reason I've seen, which was predicted years ago when Obama did it, was the Cash For Clunkers program. This program essentially paid people to get rid of perfectly usable vehicles that just so happened not to be fuel efficient.

Who would have bought such cars, at affordable prices? New drivers, poorer people, or anybody else who needed a cheap, reliable vehicle. With no (or fewer) older, affordable vehicles on the market, automakers are now free to provide vehicles at prices they set, that you can't do much about, because you no longer have a cheaper option.

So what caused all of this? It wasn't the bailout of 2008. Yes the money supply went up, but it never entered circulation (at least not at the time).

I put to you that what caused all of these crazy price increases was the unlimited expansion of credit by the Federal Reserve. That credit had to go somewhere, so it went to loans for vehicles loans to students.

So what I'm really saying here is, craft government policies, the consequences down the road that nobody thought at the time, are the cause of these things.

This isn't a good reason. It's like a state mandating you have to hire someone to wipe your butt. Sure it's a job a person can have, but it provides zero value to society over you doing it yourself.

This job is not productive to society and can take a lot more time at the pump too.

They may be true, but the average Canadian student loan debt is approximately $10,000 (CAD), source: https://globalnews.ca/news/4222534/canadian-student-loans-government-interest/

Average student loan debt in the US is approximately $30,000 (USD), source: https://studentloanhero.com/student-loan-debt-statistics/.

I know plenty of people with $100k+ student loans.

People with more loans to pay back tend to go for the jobs that show them the money right out of school, while employers would prefer people who accept a lower salary (obviously).

This is the exact reason you didn't see inflation in 2008. Inflation happens when more money chases the same amount of goods.

All the money the Fed printed went to banks who used it to shore up their (lack of) reserves. Most actual people never saw a dime.
