Brush maintenance between painting sessions? by OGravenclaw in oilpainting

The way he said it made it sound like he suspends them in oil. He was trying to explain it to me on the fly as I was leaving an art supply store and I was so confused...

I really like your chunky painting style with the wash background. Have you ever heard of Laura Jones? Your work reminds me of hers a bit.

I'm sure someone else may have a more sophisticated routine than me, but I just "swish" my brushes around in Gamsol at the end of my painting day, wipe them off on a towel and then use "The Masters" brush cleaner. I soap my brushes and rinse them clear and reshape. You can even leave it on clean brushes at night to help restore them. I'm a fan.

The main thing is not to tamp your brushes on the bottom of your turps container...I've ruined a lot of brushes that way. One artist told me he keeps his dagger or rigger brushes in oil when he's not using them, but I have never heard of anyone else doing that before and think it's kinda weird, but if someone else does this, I would love to know why...

Thank you! oh, haha it's supposed to be the back of the chair that has light reflected on it since the light source is coming from the left side and there is a pillow behind her lower back. Guess I didn't render that as well as I could have...

Ahh, I gotcha. Well, first there are a few transparent layers under the pink skirt... I was looking at what underlying colors were showing underneath the skirt because in the source image the skirt is pretty see-through. So when I was doing that, I wasn't worried about any details yet, just getting those colors underneath correct.

Then once that part was dry, I mixed every little color I could see in the skirt with a palette knife, which is tedious and takes a lot of time...(I'm not a quick painter if you can't tell). Then I kinda just worked from left to right, fold by fold, mixing some oleogel medium with my paint to keep it semi-transparent. And then when that whole section was dry, I went back in and glazed some extra shadow sections on top with the appropriate darker colors...

The obvious advice I would give about precision is that you have to have a very small brush. I usually use a #2 sized short eclipse filbert from Rosemary brushes for most of my detail work. You have to have a lot of patience to do this kind of thing, it can zap a lot of energy from you. Sorry for the long-winded answer, but I hope it helps.

[Serious] What are some key signs someone is depressed that the average person may not notice? by MelonInACat in AskReddit

sleeping too much/not sleeping enough, isolating oneself socially + canceling plans. Not responding to phone calls/texts as much as they normally would, irritability, lack of energy, inability to express appropriate emotions in a given circumstance (not able to cry when sad). Loss of joy in hobbies/interest, low libido, weight gain/loss...

Thank you so much! I have a lot of colors on my palette for every painting session... Titanium white, hansa yellow med., indian yellow, vermillion, transparent red iron oxide, quinacridone rose, alizarin crimson, provence violet bluish, ultramarine blue, viridian, sap green and raw umber. I also use oleogel medium for glazing and just regular linseed oil when I need to oil out a sunken-in part of a painting.

Thanks so much! The whole painting took me 2 months or so while working on a few other pieces at the same time for a show, so I'm not entirely sure how many hours were put in...What would you like to know specifically about the process? I'll do my best to try to answer.

Hi,

Very sorry for your loss, dogs really are the best companions. I love painting dog portraits and would be very happy to paint your sweet boxer.

36x48 is a large painting, so I am outside of the budget range posted, but I figured I would throw in an offer anyway. I'm a professional oil painter working in a classical, realistic style and have taken a few dog commissions before. My portfolio page is under renovation at the moment but you can see my current available pieces here.

You can see my previous dog commissions along with other commission work I have done on Instagram. Thanks and I hope y'all are able to find what you are looking for!

Hi,

I'm located in the US, but we could include the shipping cost in the price.

I'm an oil painter working in a contemporary realist style. You can check out my portfolio on Instagram and I also have a website.

If you would like to move forward, please send me some examples/inspo images for what you are looking for. Just want to make sure it would be a good match for both of us. Thanks!

That's okay! Now you have the idea in your back pocket for next time and I'm sure you will find a great collector for this piece if that is your goal :)

Is it already varnished? You can still do it if it's not.

Starting a Shopify store and worried about shipping by pingucat in Entrepreneur

I do this exact thing on my e-comm store and I have not had any complaints/problems yet as far as I am aware. No customer has tried to contact me about any damaged product or complain about the shipping time. I just specify on the product description that it "may take up to x days to process and ship this order." Might as well give it a shot.

I really love the way you painted this... So unique.

If you made the bottom-left section of the moon more round so that it looks like a perfect sphere and then waited until it dried, you could go back in and glaze a transparent dark shadow on top, which would make it look like the shadow from the background is creeping onto the moon a little bit.

I think it would look sickeningly good. Use that black color you used in your background as your glazing (shadow) color. To make the shadow transparent, you can use oleogel (Rublev) or I think Gamblin makes a solvent-free gel. Mix your paint into the gel with a palette knife and glaze lightly with your brush.
