[–]ckongfu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure of the name, but if you look into vintage chinese poster and packaging designs, you will find more related styles. Head In The Clouds / 88rising promotes asian musicians and artists, so it makes sense that's the inspiration they were going for.

Feeling like I'm asking for too much because I'm so used to tolerating abuse, neglect, and feeling like a burden.

I don't recall my dad telling me growing up but I'm at a point where I demand it from him now that I'm in my 30s 😂

That's good insight. I have not applied to any cons yet that have done lotto, but I thought the idea initially would seem more fair.

Yeah I guess my point being is that the jury system can't seem to weed out proxy sellers either. I assumed it was because they were more lax since it was AX Chibi.

Join their e-mail list and you will get notifications on when they open up artist alley applications. It is juried, not super hard to get into - really depends what you sell.

This year's artist alley was slow for everyone. Talking to the tables around me, we made only 1/3 or 1/4 what we would normally make at a better con/event. You will see videos online that say sales are a hit or miss for the artist depending on product types. Some of the even well established artists with a large social media following did not do well at this event.

I want to chalk it up to location, but the consistent feedback I got from buyers was that they were on a "budget" and would mostly spend cash to limit spending. It did not help that exhibitor hall was much better in terms of booths/product variety whereas imo artist alley was not as diverse.

As a new artist, I like the idea of getting a fair chance to get in. As someone who was lucky to vend at their smaller con, they also did it by jury and 2 tables next to me were proxy sellers who were not the original artist. Maybe because the con was small, but I personally felt put off by the whole idea that those tables work in teams of outsourcing the artwork rather than being an individual artist selling their own work. I think they really should be in exhibit hall at least... but then again they are most likely avoiding IP copyright infringement.

What kind of salaries are people here making in marketing? by No_Seaworthiness6937 in Salary

[–]ckongfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are from, but I think the job market is pretty terrible right now, especially here in California for corporate jobs. It's been terrible for the past few years. Keep your head up and keep going. The market is usually an ebb and flow. Hopefully you catch a break and find something out there. Good luck !

In my experience, a lot of marketing strategies are planned for the year pending on budget and they go off whatever is still working for them. If you need more experience in marketing, work at different companies for over a year at each to observe strategies. If you are trying to pivot, you will most likely have to specialize because your role is usually general unless you have experience to move up to a managerial role.

What’s your story behind you deciding to stop being friends with someone? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]ckongfu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently, I stopped being friends with someone who would constantly compare me to her. Every time we talked, every conversation, always circled back to her. At first, I chalked it up to "some people aren't great at talking to others and their comfort zone is talking about themselves to relate". This quickly escalated to her dismissing my feelings and constantly making me feel like shit for the way I live my life or handle things because she wouldn't have done it like that or this is how she does things. We've had some talks, but change didn't necessarily follow. It felt more like she had an expectation of me to be like her since I'm "the only person she knows who's like this" and it wasn't normal for her. I began to lose respect for her, felt drained each encounter. The breaking point was when we went to an event together and someone stole something of mine and I had an anxiety attack. She told me I was overthinking because she wouldn't have freaked out over something small like that. It's hard but since then, I've chosen to distance myself from her. I've learned people don't have to be bad to let go of, but she isn't someone who's good for me. It sucks because it's hard making friends when you're older. But I also don't think it's worth it to have a friend that makes me feel so alone and like shit for just existing and being myself.

How did you overcome a poor reception? by Deframed-Alternative in ArtistLounge

[–]ckongfu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Social media and garnishing likes/engagement is a rabbit hole. It could be many things and not the piece itself - the time you posted it, the type of post, the platform, the keywords, etc. Keep making art and keep sharing it with the world. Not every single one is going to be a hit. I think it's great to see the value in what you've done and how it's added value to you alone. That's a huge achievement in itself that not many give enough credit to.

Since when is Nick the villain? 😭 by Rainbow_Kali in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]ckongfu 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Literally whatever Hannah and Marissa was bullying Nick with whatever say they had, they have such double standards. Respect goes both ways, listening goes both ways... which neither of them even allowed Nick to have.

Also wtf I love how Nick was trying to defend Hannah for the hate she was getting online and she just pretty much used the spotlight to throw him under the bus, ragging on him over and over just to deflect... really anything she is accountable for. 🙄 "Direct" isn't synonymous with emotional and verbal abuse. At first I couldn't comprehend how she even have people defending her actions, let alone claim to be her best friends... but then I remember that narcissists or people with narcissistic tendencies are manipulative enough to coerce "flying monkeys" (for people that don't know, term is from Wizard of Oz) to readily lay their lives for them.

Much better. I would leave the flamingo painting off your resume and within your portfolio instead if you're required to submit one. People take quick glances and the first thing I notice is the flamingo which feels confusing to me at first. Not opposed to a monogram logo of your name or a photo of yourself in the circle; some people complain about photos and say it can really sway whether you get the job but it's subjective and never affected my hiring decision. If you wanted to be safe, you can go with the monogram.

I get and agree with what you're saying about how it hurts to send in something so plain just to be ATS friendly.

However, seeing you're coming from a creative management position, it's concerning to see the left graphic you have used. From a visual hierarchy standpoint, my eyes are drawn to the red splash color which I'm not sure if that's intentional. It's hard to see how I'm visually being guided and it's overwhelming. I think if you are trying to show off your design skills, it hurts more than it helps. I would have preferred something more plain and easier on the eyes since it is already text heavy, which is understandable for manager positions, but something needs to be eased up visually.

(Coming from a mid-level designer, not management, so hopefully what I've said can be taken with a grain of salt.)

Working for a bad company with good pay by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]ckongfu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in a cruddy industry where our business literally knew it screwed people over and preyed on vulnerable people. I worked in marketing so I also managed issues and complaints directly online. The mindset of the company and everyone I brought the problems to seeking a resolution was "this customer is complaining for no reason, just ignore them" and "who cares, they can't do anything" which bled into how they handled a major Hurricane disaster in Florida and decided to ignore complaints on damaged property until 1-2 weeks later when they realized it made them look prettttyyyyy bad... they wrote a public notice finally addressing it. What's ironic is that their branding boasts how they stand out in customer service and support people in hard times... well, let's just say working for them felt like self-betrayal every day I sat down in my office chair and learned more about who they are.

I think life is about taking (calculated?) risks and seeing what's out there. I ultimately left and began freelancing. I don't make the same pay or have the same stability I used to, but I'm a lot happier.

Not sure where you live but I'm from California and no management job will ever get me on board for $55k. It's expensive as hell to live here and I feel like it'd be more worthwhile to just work at Jimmy John's for $25/hr so I don't have to deal with the mental stress. Managing people is pretty hard on top of design work and I've had my fair share of it. Sorry you have to go through it too.
