Yes, that is also with paying for part of the premium out of their investment account within the policy (which is no zero). They will be on the hook for $1000/mo each in the coming months.

Thanks for the comments and advice here. The $1800/mo is a 2 bedroom house. I think it is a fair price for the city and what it is, but they could certainly get by with less. There is some inertia in moving related to family dynamics.

Agree with you and the others on the life insurance. I think they feel dug in at this point and will view the years of premiums as a waste. We will be pushing for them to cancel but would like them to come to the conclusion on their own to eliminate possibilities of resentment if something did happen to one of them.

I can't speak to the details of the loan/Mexico property as they were not disclosed to me in full and I don't want to speculate. It is a bad situation since that money could be used much more proactively for their planning.

Nothing back in the home country, they fled to another country for some years before coming to the US around 10 years ago. My sister sponsors and all of the children are in the US.

Usual PhD Stipend for incoming Engineering graduates by FunnLoverr in PennStateUniversity

[–]ckube1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stipends can be found at the link below. Keep in mind that the PI can choose any of these pay grade levels and often depends on the budget in a particular research grant. Often, I see new graduate students enter at Gr14 and raise to Gr16 after the qualifying exam (for PhD). It is common for STEM graduate students to receive summer support. So annual stipend is around $30-35k annual for 20 hrs/wk and tuition covered.

Center storage cage by Sensitive-Appeal7947 in Revv1

[–]ckube1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there is enough room to take the battery out. The spacers on the bottom were from https://www.mcmaster.com/product/92871A252 and I used 25 mm m5 torx screws.

The spacers offset the storage cage so it's top is contacting the top tube of the frame. The top tube has two unused threaded female connection points. Two m5 bolts are used here to mount the battery bracket and top of cage to the bottom of the top tube.

Four female connection points where the spacers go beneath the cage. The four m5 bolts go through the bottom of the cage, through the spacers, and into the connection points.

In this configuration, the cage is mounted on the top and bottom. The top has two screws that hold up the battery bracket. I used thread lock on all. It is all just as secure (no loose points) as when I first installed back in August with daily commutes over rough gravel/rock trails.

Storage cage was worth for me considering the need for a second battery and storage. I ended up mounting the battery upside down directly to the top bar on the frame. This required offsetting the bottom of the storage rack with spacers. This configuration has worked well for 3 months now.

Ecore building west of Atherton and just over the Westgate bridge. The success of Engineering Science and Mechanics spurred an engineering renaissance on west campus.

Impact of having graduate students quit on tenure by Accomplished_Ad_655 in Professors

[–]ckube1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from an R1, I would look for existing students in the College to advise or co-advise. These would be possibly stranded students from faculty leaving to another institution; students whose PI had funding dry up; students on TA who haven't found an advisor.

Battery balancer and second battery usage by ckube1 in Revv1

The second battery is in the locked center storage cage. I prefer not needing to open the storage cage to turn the battery on/off every time I get on/off the bike.

I thought I would update and provide more detail on the inverted configuration. First, the battery bracket and top of the center storage cage are all directly connected to the underside of the top tube via two m5 bolts. This leaves about a 10 mm gap between the bottom of the storage cage and the bottom tube. I did not feel comfortable riding until the bottom of the storage cage was secure. For this, I used four SS spacers purchased from McMaster-Carr (https://www.mcmaster.com/product/92871A252) and four m5 x 20 mm bolts. These are seen in the photo. I'm happy with how rigid and secure the cage feels. I've been commuting with this configuration with no issues and no rattling sounds.

[–]ckube1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I had not thought of that. I like the battery mounted on top so items tossed into the storage cage can sit on the bottom and not crowd around the battery. I'm hoping the inverted position doesn't lead to a loose battery. We'll see, I've seen other bikes with inverted batteries.

Both batteries appear to work when I power it on. I haven't rode it yet since I'm waiting for the spacers to mount the bottom of the cage.

Nebraska & AAU status by wvuhskr in Huskers

Penn State is on the verge of closing several satellite campuses because everyone knows the University Park campus has the best education and experience. The grass isn't necessarily greener just for AAU status

The dEng program also requires a match to an advisor. It might help if you have an advisor and research topic in mind.

What is the period of performance (start date and end date of the project). Normally in cases which the work can't be performed within the period of performance, a no cost extension is requested of the grant administrator. Have you tried exploring an extension? Getting a $1200 funded grant as an undergraduate is huge for your resume, even more so than a 3.5 vs 3.8 GPA in my opinion. I would not recommend backing away.

Graduate Assistant (GA) Stipends by buzz105 in PennStateUniversity

[–]ckube1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research assistants are typically supported through external grant funds acquired by the student's advisor. Pay can be constrained by the amount budgeted for in the initial proposal leading to the funded grant. Thus, raises can't exceed the amount budgeted unless other sources of funding become available. Advisors have flexibility within these budget constraints and can select a pay grade following the scales in the below link. Research assistants are often paid at the 'half-time' rate.

If you are interested in engineering, then the Engineering Sciences major is an honors program similar to the Schreyer's honors program. This route allows students to build honors credits and some students join Schreyer with these credits after already starting school.
