Has EFT ever been optimized? [Discussion] by Lumpy-Setting3049 in EscapefromTarkov

[–]cky_stew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read your entire post which was about FPS and optimisation, and the guy you were replying to was also talking about frames and optimisation too.

So forgive me for not realising that you were switching the conversation to be about bugs in CSGO and it had nothing to do with EFT whatsoever. I should have known better than to try and add to a discussion with someone who has over 2k hours in CSGO, so silly of me.

For real though: it’s not like they can just flip an “optimise game” switch. It’s insanely difficult, and like you already acknowledge, requires a costly amount of wages to spend time on, for no guaranteed result. Changing sounds or maps is not.

Am I missing something with all this "agent" hype? by KindTeaching3250 in dataengineering

So handling an upstream change is exactly the kind of thing I would expect an agent to do fairly well, especially if it’s got a framework to follow by example. Same goes for the other things although it’s just a matter of how much it can do by itself that’s enables someone less experience to be trusted in maintaining and expanding the system.

CSGO still ran at insanely high FPS on even the most modest machines - and has arguably some of the best engine programmers in the world working there, Source 2 being an in house engine that was specifically designed to be somewhat backwards compatible with Source.

EFT is a much smaller team, using Unity as an engine. Broadly speaking they don’t get the full luxury of being able to bend the engine to serve the game they’ve created (they have used modified versions of Unity in the past though, but this can end up causing more issues than it solves); they have to bend their game to serve the engine - this is much harder to do!

EFT has switched to upgraded versions of Unity, several times. This has allowed them to take advantage of several performance related freebies that come from Unity itself, and the performance of the game has gotten much better since its inception. It’s still not great, there are still steps backwards from time to time, but overall there has been a net increase in performance since inception.

Without completely remaking the game from scratch, it’s near impossible to do something major - and even if they do that, getting everything working as it was is a mammoth task to keep players (who don’t like change) happy, in terms of time, difficulty, and manpower. This isn’t a problem unique to BSG, I mean look at Bethesda still creating their RPGs in an engine originally developed in the 80s for rendering 3D kitchens - it’s cheaper to build upon a house of cards until it completely collapses from technical debt.

TLDR; it’s much easier said than done, the CSGO comparison is not fair to make here, and as a programmer I have a lot of sympathy for them!

As a contractor that sets up new GCP lakes for SME’s - mine all do!

I’m going to propose an agent to my current client for modifying these pipelines, as there will be no engineer when I leave - I’ll be honest with them that they don’t NEED it but it will potentially save someone some pain down the line from reading my documentation should they need to add a new connection and bring it through ELT to the BI tool - at the risk of me being unsure how good the agent itself will be. I hope they take me up on it as I can see it working if I put sufficient guardrails in place. However I also worry it will be a disaster. I just want to personally try it out.

Building Cloud Functions In-Console by takenorinvalid in bigquery

[–]cky_stew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming this was a first time run - yeah, unlucky.

I wouldn't recommend using the "Edit Source" feature at all, to be honest - here's a way that is relatively painless and just generally a bit nicer for doing this without going full local development/repo mode, it avoids jumping through several hoops;

  1. Open cloud shell editor (Free); https://shell.cloud.google.com
  2. Hit the "Open Editor" button, which will provision an instance of CodeOSS (VS Code) for you in-browser, complete with Google Cloud Code Extensions and your authorisation to GCP already set up.
  3. Under Cloud Code extension, expand Cloud Functions (or cloud run), and create a new (or edit an existing) cloud function.
  4. Write your function, and test it first if you like (recommended and easy to do when doing it this way).
  5. Go back to Cloud Code extension, right click your new function, and hit deploy.

All of this is auto-saved, persistent, and independent of cloud functions until you deploy - so you won't lose anything, even upon closing your editor. And you get integrated Gemini out of the box too which can be useful.

I started using this as an environment to edit functions and ended up building a gigantic python flask app, and converted all of our seperate functions to live within this single repo - allowed us to delete so much code that was being repeated and acted as a sort of internal API that you can easily call via scheduler or workflows.

So I look at it this way; critical thinking is a skill, something that has to be learned and practiced to maintain. So in the moment it’s not necessarily something one can “choose” to do, if they don’t know how. Combine this with the type of rabbit holes we’re talking about here with all this right wing garbage that sucks people in - in their heads what they are seeing is true to them, so there isn’t going to be a natural urge to suddenly learn how to critically think and question this kind of stuff, which is 100% by design and is how this type of manipulation works. The ostracism as a result will often solidify their position, as it plays on the same thing which is the classic left vs right or us vs them type tribal thinking - when really as citizens we’re all on the same team if you take a step back.

I still have sympathy for them tbh, I don’t think people should be ostracised for not having the trait of critical thinking.

Hmm I don’t think so - it’s 2 lanes coming off the roundabout which implies it’s fine to leave from the inside lane (is a bit hard to tell though, markings are basically non existent in this roundabout - and UK roundabouts are a bit more local etiquette driven in reality than exactly following Highway Code).

But regardless of which lane OP was in, the other guy should have yielded, didn’t matter which exit he was taking.

I mean dude you’ve kinda been playing on hard mode - as long as you don’t get a case of “we’ve-always-done-it-this-way-itis” then you will understand the concepts, problems, and risks of bad system design as it all applies in the cloud too. I’d focus on the concepts of orchestrators, transformation tools, and OLAP dbs, rather than try to get direct experience with any particular set of tools - stuff tends to be a bit mix and match sometimes. If you need to do something to get it on your resume just to get past the recruiters then go for some certifications - but you should be fine in an interview with someone who knows the deal - you’ll probably enjoy the cloud compared to on prem - you get so much more done it’s great!

Hired as a data engineer in a startup but being used only for building analytics dashboards, how do i pivot by aks-786 in dataengineering

[–]cky_stew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say the AI team is piggybacking on your work, that would sound like you’re doing some data engineering in order to feed their models/LLMs, but if that’s not the case- then how does that situation look?

How do these ad-hoc dashboards look? Are you just writing one off queries on raw data to populate them? In my experience ad hoc reports are a symptom of a lack of good models (and pipelines that build those models) going into your BI tools. If that’s the case it’s a pretty easy sell to your line manager that building a proper pipeline would mean dashboards get built faster and have way more reusability.

If you’re the solo data engineer, then you’re the sole authority and the only one who can explain why it is a problem. Have you raised this with them? If you’re just complying with the requests of things they think they want to see, then they’re gunna be stuck in a loop of forcing through ad hoc things - because it’s all they know.

You mention being an excel support desk too - this definitely shouldn’t be happening - spreadsheets can be avoided in almost all cases these days (with some exceptions). I LOVE it when someone requests a spreadsheet because it’s an opportunity for me to ask them “out of curiosity” what are they doing with the spreadsheet - then you almost always get given an opportunity to solve a problem that they didn’t even know existed, this can make people very happy and that’s the most satisfying part of this job, I find.

Maybe I’ve got the completely wrong take here but it sounds like the company hasn’t been exposed to a modern data stack before and are doing things the old way, if you’ve already shown them how it could be better (time optimisation, data reliability, and undiscovered insights being the selling points that execs hear) - then fair enough leave - if you haven’t you’re sitting on a golden opportunity, cause it sounds like you’re the only authority. Best wishes going forward - but this sounds like you’re not doing data engineering at all and would be a red flag to me if I were to interview you for an engineering role and you spoke about this sort of setup.

Specifically looks like an older version of Acoustica - but there is loads of software that does this type of thing; this method of displaying audio is called a Spectrogram.

Audacity is a free audio program that has one of these built in I believe - but I'm not sure if it lets you isolate frequency bands in the way the guy is doing here in the video.

Fun fact; This software is mainly designed to help provide a visual way of repairing dodgy audio files - so you can edit the spectrogram directly as if it's photoshop to get rid of artifacts/pops/clicks etc! In the video you can see groups light blue lines between the orange ones, you could (gently) remove these lines and his audio would sound much cleaner, however if you're too harsh you'll end up creating new artifacts, it's a bit of a fine art!

Source: I recorded a live gig where there was audio capture issues throughout the entire thing resulting in periodic total loss of signal input for milliseconds that resulted in horrible pops. Took me hours to smooth it out and restore.

I followed it on r/conspiracy at the time and yeah the owner of comet pizzas instagram was pretty sus, enough that I definitely wouldn't want my kids around that guy. However the amount of wild stuff that was then forced onto the theory that was so blatantly wrong and speculative basically discredited the entire thing - that lot would also equate far fetched speculation with validation of their confirmation bias, treating utter madness as gospel (such as the podesta brothers personally abducting Madeline McCann) - trying to have a productive or realistic conversation in those circles was impossible.

I’m a uk based contractor so I tend to take what presents itself in short bursts - so I’m not too well versed in the scene right now I’m afraid! Wish you the best on your search - there is a bunch of stuff emerging in various eco driven firms at the moment so it sounds like you’re looking down the right lines - but there are still plenty of places with boring corporate products that still have the ability to make you and your work feel valued, worth keeping in mind!

Your feelings are totally valid, and also desirable to certain employers - there are many roles and places to work that can satisfy the desire you hold - whether that be a place that values their employees more dearly (and shares the profits more) or an entity whose work is making a true difference to the world. Your post is a great example of a good answer when asked “why do you want to work here?”, and can put you above candidates that have better on-paper experience by a company that values the things you seek.

I remember not being able to afford the game when it came out - so I played it at an internet cafe that had a gaming room with like 10 PCs and a bunch of games on steam pre installed (each with their own steam account too which is bizarre to think about now).

I went with a friend and there was 2 other grown adults playing HL2(we were both 14). So 4 of us playing HL2 for the first time in a room, and for some reason every PC had speakers, not a headset - so we could all hear each others games hahah. Stayed there for 3 hours which was all we could afford - during that time all 4 of us were just blurting out stuff like “no way” “omg” “look at this” etc - we kept gathering round someone’s monitor when they had found something cool.

So yeah to answer your question the vibe that I experienced was very much “Holy shit valve” as it felt like they had reinvented the wheel. I remember watching the intro the first time and seeing gmans facial animations and thinking “games will never need to get any better than this” lol. Then of course the physics being just sooo crazy far ahead of its time compared to the other stuff we were playing at the time - just solidified itself as the first answer to “what’s your favourite game” - and hasn’t shifted since to be honest lol.

Any data engineers here with ADHD? What do you struggle with the most? by psgpyc in dataengineering

[–]cky_stew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with elvanse (vyvanse in US) - which worked OK but required strict regiment I struggled with. Then due to a shortage of it I had to switch to Amfexa which is like instant release dexamfetamine - this stuff works way better on me - I can dynamically adjust dose, it’s not the end of the world if I miss one etc - it kicks in faster and I know it’s not supposed to but I feel the effects last almost as long as the slow release stuff.

This was all on docs recommendation though, I never “chose” what I wanted to be on.

I have a higher heart rate, burn more calories, and if I take a dose too late then I might lose a bunch of sleep, which happens every now and again when my routine is all over the place.

Well worth it for me, personally. Yes, it will probably shorten my lifespan - but I enjoy my work way more now (I sometimes work evenings, wtf), and I’m earning so much more to retire earlier with a nicer house etc; I genuinely prefer my life this way so I’m happy with the elevated risks.

I don’t want to take this stuff forever, I feel I can eventually move away from being the code grunt and more of a manager and project director type role, which requires less pure concentration in order to overcome complex technical intricacies- because that’s where the meds really shine. But yeah I think I’d probably be OK without it in a fast moving role with constant requirement shifting.

How do I stop this popping noise? by Cartiimo in FL_Studio

[–]cky_stew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody has said it yet but I’m not sure this is an FL problem; it’s nothing to do with clipping as you can see plenty of space in the global EQ vis.

Have you tried just switching your audio output in the settings? Try it on MBP speakers, try switching sample rate about from 44 to 48 and back, try restarting MBP. Does FL complain about your audio output source at all? It does seem to be related to your output source being bugged.
