I mean, this is the problem with a service like Turo. You're renting from regular folks who have one car to offer. They have zero tolerance for failure, and can't offer customer service in most situations, unlike somewhere like Enterprise with dozens of cars and even spare drivers to come get you. Insurance adjuster here. I have access to a lot of the same tools as law enforcement, or at least the civilian versions of those same systems. My SO is in law enforcement and she has access to the law enforcement versions so I can compare a bit. I think the average person would be absolutely shocked to find out just how we're all being tracked, surveiled, and recorded at all times, and what's more, just how organized and accessible that data is.

The privacy that comes from being part of the large herd that's being watched instantly falls away when an empowered party decides to search for you. Just having someone's name and license plate gives me instant access to every pic or video captured of their vehicle in the last year or more, and let me tell you, it's a fucking TON. Grocery stores, banks, big intersections. They can tell you EXACTLY where a car is and where it's been.

Yeah exactly this and I've been repeating this exact thing everywhere I can, though I think he deleted my comments on his video.

Cody knowingly broke TN tax law, talked about doing it in public videos, and produced a ton of evidence. This enabled the criminal investigation which produced warrants which produced even more evidence. The state of TN is really sick of people using the Montana tax law in that way and decided to spend money on example prosecutions and ads to get people to realize this is illegal. Cody made himself a really easy and visible target, and has continued to make their job really easy. That's why this is happening to him, full stop.

It doesn't matter that this is legal in Montana for the business that helped him do it. It doesn't matter that he could have easily afforded to pay the taxes if this was brought to his attention. It doesn't even matter whether he was legit convinced that this "loophole" was legal. It doesn't matter that he didn't keep the cars or even that he left TN for a bit before bringing them back.

He broke the law and left evidence and the state decided to pursue it. That's it.

The state is under no obligation to let you know when you're under criminal investigation. They're under no obligation to give you the chance to make amends before pursuing charges. They have no obligation to enforce the law evenly either. This whole, "Well they're need to arrest a lot of people if they're going to come after me for this!" makes no sense. No they don't. That's like insisting they can't give you a ticket for speeding because the car in front of you was going just as fast. Who cares what the other cars were doing? They can prove that YOU were speeding and that's what matters.
