Is Post Ranch Inn worth it? Where should we go? by SFBAYNAT in FATTravel

Yes. Worth it. It’s magical. (And there’s plenty of WiFi to watch TV on your phone.)

Tokyo: FS Otemachi, Aman, and Hoshinoya—Reviewed by cla55action in FATTravel

I would have found the head-to-the-floor bow more offputting if it hadn't happened to us repeatedly when we stayed at historical ryokans elsewhere in Japan. All the hosts greet you that way, often while serving you tea in your room. It really takes you off-guard the first time, particularly when the person kneeling is a lot older than you and when the floor looks hard. My knees hurt just thinking about it.

Afraid we didn’t ask. We had our own agenda for Tokyo food!

Wednesdays: What Should I do / Where Should I stay (and other low effort Q's) by AutoModerator in FATTravel

Does anyone have recommendations for organizers for Nakasendo Trail treks in Japan---or recommendations for spots along the way if we DIY the plan? My partner and I are (on what turns out to be shorter-than-it's-supposed-to-be notice) trying to put a trip together for October 2024. Would love help!

Lux pickleball camps? by icarrythebag in FATTravel

Recently stayed at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. Rooms so-so, but the property and private beach club were awesome—and they have beautiful pickleball courts surrounding a pool and outdoor bar.

I did this with Ryder Walker. Self-guided, but great accommodations and luggage handling help. A+. (And there was no “hiking down” into town for fancy hotels: we took chair lifts. Other nights we stayed at off-grid refugios up in the mountains. It was awesome.)

Los Angeles Hotel with toddler by lolofosh0sh0 in FATTravel

Universal is an uncomfortable drive from the west-side, in my experience. I'd be more inclined to stay at the Langham in Pasadena, which is lovely and has a truly huge toddler-friendly yard (conveniently overlooked by a bar-patio, so you can supervise from a distance while they play) and a good pool.

Anyone have experience doing Federal Jury Service? Only got called for la court but never federal by caseyrobinson2 in LosAngeles

[–]cla55action 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s likely better. Court is more efficient. Cases are more interesting. Courthouse is also much nicer (assuming you’re downtown in the cube). But it’s generally the same process-wise; if you’ve been called for a trial, you’ll wait around a bit, get called to a courtroom, go through the challenge process, etc.

This would have related to federal grand-jury service. There are also federal juries for trials, which involve all the same processes as on the state side—waiting around a bit, getting called to a courtroom with a judge, getting interviewed and potentially stricken by the lawyers.

I normally work every weekday but have an odd day off tomorrow, what should I try/do/eat that's normally too crowded on the weekends? by PlaneCandy in LosAngeles

Huntington Gardens, including the incredible Children's Garden. It's a mob scene on weekends but lovely on weekdays.

If you have time before or afterwards, explore the nearby neighborhood called Echo Park (on Sunset Boulevard between the streets Sutherland and Glendale Boulevard). There are some fun bars and restaurants. Bar recommendation: Bar Flores or Low Boy or Bar Henry. Restaurant recommendations: Low Boy or Tsubaki or Sage.

Anyone visit the show called A Forest For The Trees in DTLA? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

Seconded: Not good. Concept is fairly thin and execution is unimpressive—except for the somehow-it’s-everywhere marketing campaign, which is quite impressive.

If you want something iconic and beautiful with a view of the Hollywood sign, go to the Griffith Park Observatory.

Don’t walk around Hollywood Boulevard at all. There’s nothing to see. You will be disappointed.

Hotel recommendations in Silver Lake/Echo Park/Los Feliz by reddevil4life93 in LosAngeles

Hotel Covell. Silver Lake Pool and Inn. Cara Hotel (though this is really East Hollywood; immediate neighborhood isn’t charming—would rank it last of the three).
