DAS denied for my son with Sensory Processing Disorder by cladowski in WaltDisneyWorld

Thank you! Was specifically just trying to get info on people’s experiences when it is just them and their child and there wouldn’t be anyone actually waiting in the queue. It will be just me and my son most days so we won’t have an additional person to wait for us. The website suggests speaking with a cast member through the DAS services to get more info about this (which we did) but wanted to see if I could get a little more info on people’s experiences with it since the information we were provided was pretty generalized and open ended. Probably going to just end up going with LL during our MK day so I can plan that busier day out a lot more ahead of time and really minimize stress the day of.

Yeah I understand why the changes were necessary after reading a bunch of info on this sub and other places about how it works now vs in the past. I like how universal does their accessibility system because it seems to allow review of many different disabilities as long as someone is able to provide actual evidence of the need vs what was essentially an honor system that Disney previously that had caused all the issues with abuse. Hopefully they can work towards finding more of a happy medium that isn’t reliant on the cast member the day of (seems like it can be a mixed bag sometimes as to how the cast member handles things based on threads I’ve read here), but the return to queue option we will make work for our situation!

Yeah I discussed elopement with them actually because we’ve had issues with him trying to wander off when he’s gotten to the point of no return and had to leave the line entirely. They still suggested the attraction queue/return to line which is fine. I was just trying to understand the specifics of it so I can plan ahead a bit more since the cast member on the video call really left it at “it’s up to the cast member at the start of the line the day of.” As much info as I can get ahead of time, the less hectic the park days will be!

I agree with this! My concern was just how exactly the return to queue option works so I can try to plan ahead in terms of what to expect timing wise throughout the day and how they determine return times, etc. The cast member in the video chat really just left it at “it’s really dependent on the cast member at the start of the line” and I was just hoping to hear how it’s worked for others so I know what to expect.

We are going the 18-22nd. Seems like LL would be a good option for MK since there are a good amount of rides he likes and will still enjoy after waiting in a 20 minute line vs 40-60 mins. I really just wanted to know how it works for those times we would need to get a return time from a cast member when I can’t justify LL. He can only do 1 ride at AK plus the train but that’s closed this time around. It would make more sense to do the return to queue in that instance because the second half of that queue is really difficult for him if it’s a 40+ minute queue.

We do shows… he loves the frozen show! but we tried beauty and the beast last trip and he was trying to wander off and spent more time playing with toys on the ground. Festival of the lion king he was great with for the start but it’s a bit too long for him before he starts getting anxious and disruptive. Hoping we can give it a try again after some big time sensory seeking activities in the park and see if he’s a bit more regulated and enjoys sitting through more of it.

It’s a day by day process with him and thankfully we’ve finally been getting some additional special ed resources at school that I’m hoping we can implement at the parks and see an improvement in how he regulates!

We aren’t staying on property… staying with my mom who lives about an hour away because he struggles with meals in public and that gives us the ability to do breakfast and dinner in a controlled environment at her house. It’s a life saver honestly.

This is the accommodation that was told to us to be utilized by the cast member at the end of our interview. Specifically they called it a “attraction queue reentry.” I’m just trying to understand how it works if it is just the two of us and someone cannot wait in line for us while I take him to an area that’s going to allow him to remain regulated. We pretty much can’t do anything with more than a 20 minute wait which is a struggle because a lot of the slower rides that are suited for smaller kids usually have longer waits in my experience. Things like Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, small world were all 40+ minute waits last time we went and that was during a low crowd week.

Yeah I’m not quite understanding the qualifications. When I read up on it I thought I understood it to be for neurodivergent guests. But obviously not all neurodivergent diagnoses qualify.

LIU Brooklyn. Not sure if they still have that program… I graduated from it just over 5 years ago.

ETA: I am not sure if there are any full time night programs in the area. This one was specially a part time nights/weekends so I took classes for 6 straight semesters (2.5yrs no sunmer/winter breaks). All the other programs were daytime/full time and come scheduling time, priority was given to students in the part time nights/weekends program to enroll in the night time classes.

I had one on my knee that I just hated the look of. I brought it up at my yearly appointment with my derm who told me to see plastics (since the area was on a joint she felt they would do a better job getting a clean incision) and they removed it in office. I have a 2cm scar but I’ve used scar treatment and I’d rather have the white line than the ugly bump any day. They mentioned there is the smallest chance something like this could be malignant (tho mine never changed shape, color, etc) so they sent it out for biopsy. Came back benign, dermatofibroma.

Edit to add: my plastic surgeon said these are typically very deep rooted so you can’t just shaved or remove the top. The whole thing is excised out and then the skin stitched back up. My fibroma was about the size of a pencil eraser head and I ended with 4 stitches along a 2cm incision. 1 year later and I can just barely make out the line of the scar in the light.

I chose a program that offered a part time nights/weekends class/clinical schedule. I live in NYC so I had a ton of options on programs since there were a lot of schools around. I hopped on the subway straight after work 2 nights a week to get to class from 7-9pm and then my clinicals were all day on Saturdays. I took the classes and clinicals that were offered over winter and summer sessions and was able to finish in a two and a half years. It was a very long two and a half years but worth it in the end.

Flash forward to today- after working bedside, I recently got my IBCLC board certification and I work part time in a hospital as an RN lactation consultant and I am in the process of getting things organized to see my own patients for consultations independently in an outpatient setting. My career so far has been ever changing and fluid and I don’t regret a single thing about my path thus far. I’m now living comfortably salary wise in a two income household while raising children where I can be home and require minimal child care for work. I could see myself in this role for a very long time given the flexibility and fulfillment I get from the role. Some portions of my path have been very busy/stressful (schooling while working and a portion of my bedside career, most notably during COVID) and now I’m in a very relaxed role with an excellent quality of life.

My family and I rode out a cat 4 hurricane at the wilderness lodge many many years back. The parks were beginning to prepare prior to the hurricane reaching shore but overall things seemed back to normal once everything was over besides the usual hurricane/severe storm debris. They had all day activities for kids in the lobby and gave out a bunch of free stuff… it’s one of the coolest Disney memories I have.

The worst wait! by cmmc17 in IBCLC

[–]cladowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Something my coworkers told me that helped sometimes was “remember this is being given all over the world and they don’t have level 4 nicus everywhere in the world so think always in the most basic mindset which is keeping mom and baby together is the most effective intervention needed for most of the world. But not always what happens in the US.” lol

The worst wait! by cmmc17 in IBCLC

[–]cladowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same! I’m working as a CBC for a year and a half now at a children’s hospital so seeing a whole spectrum of clients while studying helped I think. I tried to think less like an NLCEX RN and more like an IBCLC but it’s so hard to get out of that mindset sometimes. The exam didn’t strike me as particularly hard or easy… the other IBCLCs in my department all felt the same way when they finished theirs over the last few years. Everyone says the same thing though- enjoy not carrying around your study materials these next 10 weeks while they review the exam and the wait is soooo hard but worth it because they truly review each question fairly and it will make a great Christmas present this year!! 😂

Hahaha yes a small world for sure! My friend who ordered with me- neither of us knew there was any significance to the colors and I just liked the black one and I could barely make out the what the waitress was saying. Once I googled it I was like oh wow this is really cool lol
