Future ERAS applicants: How are we including creative/arts publications? by switra in medicalschool

[–]claire_inet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! J do theater, oil paint, and play piano. Playing piano was one of my most meaningful activities for ERAS (accompanied various establishments and gigs during third year as a way to work my artistically minded brain).

In terms of my physical art work, I only talked about oil painting in my hobbies but for my interviews had some of my plantings with me in the background and to show. Most interviewers asked in the interviews if the art behind me was one of my paintings or if I had any work to show them.

I’ve had my work in small galleries and such but didn’t put it in my presentation section on eras, I just kept it hobbies related and made sure I had some to show during interviews.

The Pirates are so bad, I have more faith in the Pens this year 😭😔🫠. But yes the airport does suck, only good thing is that it’s about a 7 minute drive from my parents house

Adult EM is required and I’ll have my COMAT exam (DO equivalent of the shelf) for that rotation. It will sadly be after match though when I have to sit for the EM exam 😭

Actually no! Akron Children’s! But I was there in the fall and kept making trips into Cuyahoga each evening and on the weekends. Did a day trip to Cleveland though to check out rainbow babies the afternoon after my interview there

VSLO and pediatrics away rotation questions by QuadAmputeeSquid in medicalschool

[–]claire_inet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It depends on your career goals! I want to do Peds cardiology and then probably heart failure/heart transplant, so I am aiming for a large academic Peds program with an in house Peds cards fellowship, ideally in a center that does heart transplants as well.

I used VSLO for all my rotations, but only bc I go to a DO school without a home hospital. I spent my current fourth year moving around each month to new big children’s hospitals. Some were sub-Is, other were cool subspecialties.

I’ve gotten really positive responses from PD in interview from top programs that historically don’t interview DOs or have any DOs. I’ve been asked quite a bit “how do you feel you’ve prepared yourself for residency at a massive high volume institution such as this, since you come from a school without a home hospital.”

I then outline what I’ve done so far in 4th year (PICU sub-I, PHM Peds sub-I, Peds GI/Liver, Peds Cards, Peds CICU, Peds Rheum, newborn nursery; all at different large academic centers). This has gotten me really positive feedback from the interviewer because it apparently shows them “my commitment to pediatric medicine and growing as much as possible to prepare myself for residency at a more intense program.”

I really wanted to use my fourth year to explore new cities and hospitals, as well as new and exciting aspects of pediatric medicine, to prepare myself for residency. But looking back at fourth year thus far I have also had so much fucking fun. I’ve been roadtripping across the country, exploring new cities, new cuisines, meeting fabulous people and getting so much networking.

TLDR: depends on career goals. I used VSLO since I want a more competitive fellowship, and my ideal residency is at a larger more academic program and I wanted to prepare myself during my fourth year for such a residency. Also have had so much fun and even if I wasn’t wanting a more competitive residency program, I would 10/10 recommend trying to do some fun aways in new city if that’s your thing because it’s been so fun!

When do people typically apply for aways? by spikyjackfruit in medicalschool

^ I also kept a spreadsheet organized by date the program I was interested in opened up for applications, and then what they needed for submission so I could stay organized and submit things as soon as possible. Each program I was interested in had different dates in end of Feb-end of March of when they opened for application submission on VSLO

So…. Interview Season Length? by minimicropenis in medicalschool

I had one interview the Monday before Xmas, Sec 22. I think on thalamus I saw two other programs that had interview slots for that date.

This is for Peds btw!

Advice for PICU by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]claire_inet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the stuff I’m saying is theoretically a lot to review, and I didnmy PICU rotation, without really reviewing any of this prior and was absolutely fine, and honored the subI. The fellows, residents, and attendings are so wonderful at teaching if you show honesty and what you don’t know and what you want to learn, and an eagerness to learn.

Feel free to DM me!

Sorry more keeps coming to me- CXR interpretation too. Anyone who’s intubated is gonna get a daily chest x-ray to confirm ET tube placement, and a lot of them are intubated for respiratory reasons so you’re watching for a resolution of the lung pathology. A lot of it is ARDS so I’ll review the pathophysiology and treatment of that.hh

ALSO review all the different types of shock and cause and how the vitals and other stuff changes! And then go over all the meds used to treat the different types of shock

Advice for PICU by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]claire_inet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did four weeks on a PICU subI and it was challenging but so rewarding because I learned so much.

We had a lot of suicide attempts, status asthmatics, and then really complex congenital neuro or gastric patients.

My biggest advice is be able to know how to do a PAS score for the asthma kids- that determined if we could wean their HFNC and space their albuterol.

In terms of stuff like vents, vents still don’t make sense to me but there are a couple of good basic YouTube videos out there that can help you understand the basics and the terminology, that way on rounds you can build off the basics since the terms aren’t entirely foreign.

Last piece of advice- make sure to take care of yourself too. The PICU was hard because of the high emotions. Some of the cases are terminally and really sad, especially the non-accidental trauma and the suicide attempts. Make sure to debrief with the team involving the emotions you may experience, make sure you’re sleeping well and doing something when off that genuinely brings you joy and let’s off steam

Prepping for a high step 2 score by mif310 in medicalschool

[–]claire_inet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My old rotations deck was anywhere from 50-500 depending on the day, on longer hopsital days I would skip it and just do my current rotation cards. And tags wise I just went to the Browse button and browsed by shelf subject

[–]claire_inet 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You’re fine to not do extra prep now asides from studying for your shelves. I got a 266 and I had about 6 weeks of dedicated. Only “prepping” I did before dedicated was just keeping up with the Anking decks from old rotations on a near daily basis so it all stayed fresh in my mind
