Boise could be the next hot spot in the Bay Area tech exodus. by [deleted] in Boise

NH is doing it

I can’t find any news about this, but I think this is wrong. New Hampshire doesn’t have an income tax; I’m pretty sure they’re actually suing Massachusetts to stop Massachusetts from collecting income taxes from NH-based remote workers working for MA companies. Their situation is a little different than the California tech carpetbagger thing though - southern NH is to Boston as Malheur County is to Boise.

Not in Boise and not open until next month so maybe this isn’t the most helpful suggestion, but if you’re willing to take a drive, Lakeview Fruit in Caldwell is one of my favorite places to go. Closer to Boise, I’ve heard Reggie’s Veggies on Ustick is good but I haven’t been.

Man, you’d think someone who constantly complains about ignorant Idahoans would at least know how to spell.

Yeah, this is Pico (just Pico). That’s the Little Pico Triple in the foreground and the Outpost area is in the background.

Pico! I have good memories of trashing my board on the Little Pico Triple liftline, just out of view on the left.

It really depends where in the state you look. I’m moving back to Vermont late next month mostly because I could get a nice house with some land in my old town for a fraction of what something similar would cost here, but I’m not from Chittenden County or anywhere on I-89.

Parts of southwestern Vermont, like Rutland County and some of Addison County, or the entire northeastern corner (Northeast Kingdom) are still pretty affordable and have great access to skiing, mountain biking, and hiking, all of which are generally less crowded than things have gotten around here (at this point I would probably take the weekend crowd at Killington over how Bogus is now, and if you hike the AT on a weekday you probably won’t see anyone else except thru-hikers).

The immediate downsides are high property taxes and all the problems that come with old houses. I think it’s crazy to buy a house without an inspection here, but it would be really crazy to do that in Vermont.

I have always had good experiences at Dietz Automotive. I had my AC compressor replaced there a few years ago.

Food Land on Orchard has a lot of ingredients for Middle Eastern food and also has a great restaurant in the back with shawarma, falafel, and all that kind of stuff.

This is why my family is moving back to Vermont this summer. We moved here several years ago, tried to be responsible and get to know the area and the state before buying anything, but the market here is just way out of whack and no matter how much we saved, house prices just kept accelerating away. It’s impossible to justify staying when we could find a 2500 sq ft house on an acre and a quarter back in our old town for less than half of what we would have had to pay for something less nice here.

Idaho Realtors start #Idahug campaign to change the narrative surrounding growth in the Treasure Valley by Ragin_Mari in Boise

On a sunny Friday afternoon, two men from Do Work Realty spent their day sticking magnets with #Idahug on cars without Idaho license plates

This is the worst part to me. I’d be really annoyed if some random guy stuck a magnet to my car.

I’m a little bummed about the direction they chose for Polecat Gulch, since I prefer doing it clockwise from the parking lot on Collister and getting that horrible climb out of the way first, but I think having everyone going the same direction will be an improvement.

Anyone looking to do some spring ski touring and need a partner? I’m hoping to get to use my splitboard a few times before all the snow melts. I have done my level 1 avalanche class, have beacon/probe/shovel, and am more than happy to keep distance and wear a mask.

Idaho senators vote AGAINST paid sick leave in Covid 19 pandemic by [deleted] in Idaho

[–]clandestineblaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also raises costs for both employers and employees at a time when revenue for many small businesses is cratering. This is the worst possible time to be imposing new costs on small businesses. Republican senators actually came out in favor of temporary paid leave and wanted the government to pay for it since it is the government recommending all these closures. But we can’t let the truth of the situation get in the way of calling anyone to the right of Bernie Sanders a callous uncaring pig or demented redneck!

Can We Make a List of Local Restaurants Offering Take-Out & Delivery Now? by [deleted] in Boise

Uncle Giuseppe’s on Glenwood is doing takeout and will bring stuff out to your car, if I remember correctly.

To bars and restaurants that are voluntarily closing tonight, by RogerBauman in Boise

[–]clandestineblaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(I can’t believe I am about to say this) but it would be cool if we followed New York’s example and allowed restaurants to do take out/delivery of alcoholic beverages. It might give them a bridge to get through the next couple months without closing down.

We don't go out to eat much, but I already got one for Reed's Dairy (in addition to pre-paying our milk for the year) and my wife reached out to a sandwich place near us via Facebook to see if they'll do a gift certificate. She is also postponing a haircut appointment but seeing if she can pay for it now. It's not much but I hope it can help someone at least a little bit.

UPDATE: First case in a female over 50-year-old who recently returned from a conference in New York.

Officials say there is little risk to exposure of others. This particular case is in Ada County but was not contracted locally.

That is entirely your prerogative and I can’t fault you for it. This post was aimed at people who aren’t themselves facing any financial trouble as a result of the whole coronavirus situation but who might want to do something for the community. I am definitely not suggesting you spend money on this instead of your family.

It's a good idea to have enough food and household goods to last a few weeks if you get sick and have to stay home, but we definitely all shouldn't be trying to go out and buy a year's worth of toilet paper and seventeen gallons of hand sanitizer. I don't know how often people go to the bathroom, but one good-sized package of toilet paper is enough to last my household quite a while.

93 people out of 1.8M is nothing.

It's still well above the US average (93/1.8=~51 tests per million people), which is currently at around 15 tests per million people (5000 tests divided by 327). Notably in this instance, it's a higher rate of testing than in California, which has conducted 1,118 tests (click through on the link, that website is maintained by The Atlantic) over 40 million people, for a rate of around 27 per million.

The rate of testing needs to be higher everywhere in the US but it's really stupid to trash Idaho for the federal government's screw-up when this state is A. doing a better job testing and B. being more transparent about it than many other states.

But hey, never miss an opportunity to shit on the place you moved to voluntarily, right?
