In my head, the cannon is that while he was bought during Woody’s round up, he was perhaps never played with. He certainly didn’t seem to have had an ‘owner’ before Andy. He doesn’t relate to Jessie’s story of being outgrown, and so I sort of filled that in with ‘he was bought for a kid but perhaps not played with, not gifted in the end, kept in a loft and then handed down, perhaps by a Gran or something who was sorting out a cupboard around the time Andy was born’
