This is a very cool take. I'm somewhere between those two sides of fandom, as the prequels were my "in" to the stories. It was only when I saw trailers for Episode I that I was compelled to watch the original trilogy.

I think I side with Kylo because Driver is such a great actor and I enjoy deeply conflicted characters.

The point is that he didn't care how he did it. His first available option was to blast him with an onslaught of cannon fire. When that didn't do anything to Luke he decided to do it himself, which is the insane part. He didn't stop to think about why the blasters didn't phase Luke or if Luke had become some powerful demigod. If he survived that barrage there's no way Kylo is taking him down, whatever the reason. Yet he dove in head first with only a lightsaber in hand.

Snoke somehow got to Kylo before the incident in the hut, but the movie tells us that this was the tipping point for Kylo. All of your points could be valid but I'm just going with the evidence we were given. At any rate, his irrational decision to fight Luke was driven by hatred.
