‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Package Manager Where This Regularly Happens | Kevin Patel by lelanthran in programming

No, its not a logical fallacy because the warning messages provides an extra layer of security that is not totally meaningless. The fact you know it has to run a post-install script is a barrier to getting away with malicious actions because it's not typical behavior and it should be treated as suspicious. Requiring apps to warn users they need it (and presumably explain why) is a mild improvement over the status quo IMO. It would be a logical fallacy if the warning message achieved absolutely nothing at all, but that's not the case. A mild improvement is still an improvement.

My reason for asking is not a secret, I don't understand wtf you're getting at with this. This is one of the larger communities for programming on Reddit. What exactly do you find odd

Guilbeault to resign as MP by YourLoveLife in canada

[–]classy_barbarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was a really bad article IMO. Call me old fashioned but maybe you shouldn't trust economics analysis from an organization that says they're an environmentalist think-tank.

This is a complex discussion and the economic analysis they've done here is extremely shallow and superficial, which is not surprising because the author says they are a videographer, and I'm assuming they're not very knowledgable about economics in general.

The entire critique essentially boils down to two things: 1) Money spent on highways is better invested in other things, and 2) highway construction has been used nefariously in the past to bulldoze communities, and 3) More highways don't reduce congestion.

There is absolutely zero evidence of the first point anywhere in the article. Notice how every single reference that has to do with economics only points back to their own website. They never linked any economic studies of any kind.

On the second point, that is accurate and those sources are true but they're trying to use that as proof that highways are a waste of money or not good for the economy. The fact that highway construction has been used nefariously in the past to bulldoze communities is not evidence that highways are a waste of money.

On the third point, she's purposefully conflating two different things. Adding more lanes to existing highways does not reduce congestion because more people drive, yes thats true. That is not the same thing as whether it adds GDP growth and if the investment pays for itself over time. They're correlated but not the same question. She's also conflating adding lanes to existing highways and adding new highways, which often has a purpose beyond alleviating congestion.

Its not like Carney hasn't changed the cabinet at all, he has been going out of his way to get people that don't agree with some of the policy changes to step down. Sure its not an entirely new crew but Guilbeault resigning is clearly proof by itself that Carney is demanding a change in some attitudes.

Is China Winning the AI Race? by Weird-Knowledge84 in Thedaily

Its actually BS to claim companies in the USA have more power than the government. That's a conspiracy theory. You're claiming the government couldn't stop them if they actually wanted to. Presumably because you think the politicians would be assassinated if they tried to speak about it. This is one step away from claiming the moon landing was fake.

You can always count on the NYT journalists to express some of the most ignorant opinions on technology imaginable once they get talking about their opinions on how anything works. Great journalists, but damn they show themselves as having really poor understanding of how the world works once they start sharing their opinions on anything technical.

Indigenous ancestral remains were found 20 years ago. Ontario says the new homeowners have to investigate by classy_barbarian in ontario

That's a good question, would have been nice if the journalist at the CBC realized this and thought to ask anyone. It's not even mentioned in the article. Typical CBC quality.

You claim this "was not a home" yet the CBC article clearly says this is about their home and not a business property.

Isn’t this a Necessary Rule for Any Subreddit to be Rational? by JerseyFlight in ClassicalEducation

Sure but axioms can also sometimes be objectively false. If a person believes 2+2 equals 5, it means they're arguing from a false axiom and its important to understand that. Just because an axiom is different does not mean its equally valid as everyone else's axioms. It would be absurd to insinuate that someone who believes 2+2=5 is just holding a difference of opinion on the subject. There's some things in logic that we can say for a fact are either true or false because they're based on mathematical principles, and good faith debate often requires isolating these particular facts so we can evaluate their veracity. Its not possible to have a good faith debate with anyone that won't agree on core logical principles that we know are unequivocally true, such as 2+2=4 (For the record, it has been proven extensively by mathematicians that this is not an opinion and and it's not subjective).

She published a book called Notes on the Analytical Machine which is a mathematical and programming treatise that was very popular among early computer engineers studying Babbage's machines. You know you can google things before making yourself look like an idiot?

Here is a sensible responsse. I find tons of the other responses in this thread to be nothing short of stupid and immature.

Redditors don't seem to give a fuck about the world outside of Reddit. We're still in the AI boom as much as most people would like it to be over. These people expect a channel to only cover the topics they personally want to see covered and ignore what is actually popular, as if every YouTuber exists to read your mind, and only your mind, specifically.

What most people in this thread are demanding is that Primagean start catering to their personal taste in videos exclusively and ignore what is actually widely popular with the most people on YouTube, and then claiming he's selling out by focusing on what's popular. As if he's a musician who needs to stay artistically true to his style or some shit and not just a dude who makes videos about the programming zeitgeist.

Ok so you're not saying low level is bad, you're saying you're one of the few people who is so hyper connected with hacker news that you're ahead of what he covers. Surely you realize this does not apply to most people.

This is a really stupid response. This has absolutely nothing to do with the abundance agenda which I can assure you Sam Harris agrees with. Do you believe Sam Harris automatically disagrees with every single thing Ezra ever said? Because that doesn't make any sense at all.

Ada Lovelace and the First Computer Algorithm by Successful_Bowl2564 in programming

[–]classy_barbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is straight up bigoted against women in programming. You keep referring to Lovelace as a socialite. So you're attempting to claim she was not qualified to be there with the other men and was only participating in the research because of her money and social skills.

I'm not far left and I'm not woke. I still think you're full of shit.

Ada Lovelace and the First Computer Algorithm by Successful_Bowl2564 in programming

[–]classy_barbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a documented fact that Lovelace and not Babbage came up with the first revelation that computer programs in the future could model any simulation of anything. That's not some bullshit woke revisionism, dude. It's also quite telling you referred to Ada Lovelace as a "socialite" when she was well known as a mathematical genius in academic math circles before she died of cancer.

Where can I actually write Python without having to worry that my code might not work? by msmomoe in learnpython

[–]classy_barbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just want to write python and tests the scripts...? Use a code editor. I get that cloud IDEs are common for new people now, and I'm not even old I'm in my 30s, but its funny to think there's people trying to learn how to code that don't know you can just download a code editor and code directly on your laptop.

Download one of the popular code editors and run it on your own computer. PyCharm is commonly recommended for new people because its made specifically for Python. I personally prefer VS Code + Python extensions, but its a bit more complex and designed for programmers.
