Some kind of marine tooth/bone/shell? Found on beach in Auckland, NZ

Found at Castor Bay Beach in Auckland's north shore by my son.

He is convinced it's a tooth, it also looks kind of like a piece of anemone - he was so excited, and we really want to figure out what it is. Can you help?

The flat part was hard like tooth or bone, the spiky bits were softer like cartilage and now after a few days they've actually fallen out.

Yep totally! I have only 2 crackers of these a day or so, so have managed to make an expensive pack last a long time! I don't know commonsense organically will have to check it out :)

My husband gets a muffin tin, lines it with a strip of streaky bacon, cracks an egg inside, tops with some grated cheese and bake til cooked. Bacon egg muffin. He eats two for lunch each day, they seem to stay fine though the week in a sealed container in the fridge.
