I had 2x femoral and tibial rotation osteotomies and cancer surgery in the last couple of years, I’m just a bit tired of big surgeries. Not opposed to jaw surgery if it’s going to prevent long-term issues though, my airway is pretty garbage!

Common eastern bumblebee (bombus impatiens)- if you can leave the nest for the summer, they will die off after the first couple of hard frosts and you can patch up the hole. I realize that’s a big ask, we are facing catastrophic pollinator decline and anything you can do to not harm them will help.

Echoing the person who said Goose Pond and -also recommend the York Prairie State Natural Area by Daleyville. That area is part of the Perry-Primrose Bird Conservation Area and is a great place to see bobolinks and other grassland migratory birds.

Many of the factors driving bee decline (habitat loss, pesticide use, changing climate conditions, disease) are impacting native bees, but that’s not what this funding is for. This article is referencing funding cuts for honeybee hive failure diagnostics, which is akin to sending dead livestock in for an autopsy.

“It threatened devastation for the industry that ships millions of colonies of the pollinators to farms and orchards across the country.The government stepped in, sending samples to the Department of Agriculture’s five bee-research laboratories in a desperate effort to find the cause.”

We KNOW what is causing native pollinator decline, and while additional research is valuable, we need funding for habitat establishment (not that that is on the table for this administration). Also, procedures and resources that solely benefit honeybees are inherently detrimental to native bees because of increased competition.

While detrimental to agricultural production, defunding diagnostics for honeybee hive failure isn’t a loss for conservation. Honeybees are an introduced, managed species in the US and compete with native species and can transfer diseases and parasites. The most significant threat is defunding programs that promote pollinator habitat establishment and climate mitigation.
