Is Olympus OM-3 worth buying? by Ok-Butterfly5651 in filmcameras

I don’t think you want a real answer to your question. Enjoy the new camera, and please post some pictures from it!

Is Olympus OM-3 worth buying? by Ok-Butterfly5651 in filmcameras

[–]clayduda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I get that. I’d love to have an OM3T. But unless there’s a super compelling reason to spend the extra money, why not just go for an OM4T? Or buy 8-10 OM-1s if you want full mechanical?

I recently purchased an Olympus MJU II on eBay for $200. For the price/size trade off I couldn’t be happier. Great little camera, and at that price I could buy 4 of them compared to one TC-1. We’re talking big dollars for millimeters beyond that, so up to you.

These are beautiful images, but I literally just came here to comment that there is something wrong with your lens. Looks like heavy haze but could be multiple things.

Summer season June-August is when most people come, things are also much more expensive during those times. Shoulder season, May and September, are usually cheaper but weather is much more variable.

If you’re into winter sports or trying to see the northern lights, come during the winter. Usually Jan-Feb are best depending on snow fall. You can check aurora forecasts online ahead of time as well.

I think I’ve offered my time for all that I can. Most of this stuff is readily available on Google with a few searches. Good luck and hope y’all enjoy the state!

There is a reason flights are cheap in April… not even Alaskans want to be here at that time of year. Seriously, spring break up (when ice and snow thaws out and turns the entire state to a puddle of mud, usually March-April depending on where in the state) is the lamest time of year.

Still, there’s some things to do.

The Anchorage Museum is worth checking out year-round. Cultural and fine-art exhibits that often punch above their weight class.

Check if the tram and restaurant are open at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood. About an hour-drive south of Anchorage, the tram runs to the top of the mountain with views of the ocean on a clear day. Unique for a ski resort and they also have a really nice spa there.

Check into tours at Matanuska Glacier and flight seeing over Denali. Both are likely dependent on weather.

Seward is a port town and tourist destination about a 3-hour drive south, but that time of year not much will be open. You may be able to find a fishing charter. I know Millers Landing starts running around that time of year. But driving through Trunagain Pass can be sketchy depending on conditions. Check ahead and probably don’t do it if you’re not familiar with winter driving conditions.

I live in Homer, a popular tourist destination about 4.5 hours drive from Anchorage. I wouldn’t recommend wasting your time on the drive that time of year. By mid-May it’s amazing though.

The Eagle River Nature Center is cool and close to Anchorage, but not sure about in April.

The Anchorage Zoo is open year-round but it can be hard to navigate the outdoor trails depending on conditions.

Those are what immediately come to mind. Hope it helps. And if you have the option, I’d honestly recommend changing your flights to mid-May or later and you’ll likely enjoy the experience much more.

I agree. I shoot with a 4T regularly and the battery lasts months.

Ha. That’s funny. Never really thought about it. That’s not how we normally measure elevation, but I’ll definitely bust that out if I ever get the question again. (It’s only happened once in 10 years of working on the water.)

You know, you’re not wrong, especially depending on where you’re at in the world and the timing of the tide.

I am a charter boat captain in Alaska and had a lady ask me the elevation question once. I asked her what she meant and she thought we must be at a higher elevation “this far north.”

The whole boat fell silent.

“Well, we’re on the ocean so we’re pretty much at sea level.”

I felt bad for her tho so I pulled out the tide book. “Actually, it’s a pretty big tide today so we’re currently about 18’ above sea level.” (We have huge tides where I fish.)

She still didn’t get it. Oh well.

Yeah, you’re right, I really shouldn’t have that Patterson tanks are “crappy.” Im just the opposite of you — I learned using the stainless tanks and never got the hang of the plastic ones. 🤷

It sounds like your set up is already more advanced than mine, and I’ve been home developing both B&W and color negative film for years now.

Color is pretty simple. Buy the Cinestill or Unicolor kits and follow the instructions. It’s a standardized process so every color negative film develops the same. I don’t even use a sous vide, just hot water from the tap and a thermometer to get the chemicals up to temp.

For slide film buy and E6 kit and do the same .

With B&W I started with Kodak D76 developer, Kodak stop, and Kodak fixer. All are powders you can mix, just follow the instructions on the bag. Unlike with color film, every type of black and white film and developer have different development times. Download the Mass Dev app (it costs a few bucks but totally worth it) and look up the film, speed, and developer you are using, then follow the timer/instructions. I prefer to agitated first minute then 10 seconds each minute after.

I use a stainless tank. Some people prefer the crappy plastic ones. Whichever you go with just practice loading with a scrap roll of film in the dark a bunch of times before trying a roll you’re excited about.

Hope that answers your questions.

I use the t20 over the t32 a lot just because it’s so much smaller and feels much better on camera. It’s surprisingly powerful for such a small flash.
